Life isn't all that exciting in quiet Border Town for our hero, who spends most days hanging out with his best friend Benjamin. Long expected to take over the mundane life of tending the family inn, our hero wistfully craves a life of adventure. An even bigger burn: Some prophet visited Border Town a long time ago, and foretold that Benjamin would grow into the legendary hero. Talk about living under someone's shadow!

And live under a "Shadow" they did: For stories have increased in recent days of a great dragon of the same name, Shadow, rising up and amassing an empire to take over the land. Monsters have increased in number and strength, and some cities have fallen. It is clear that something isn't quite right.

Back in Border Town, things are peaceful... for now. However, on the eve of the dubious ceremony celebrating our hero's new job, Benjamin goes missing. When the would-be-innkeeper goes to search for him, he gets wrapped up in all the adventure he could have ever dreamed of, as his little journey takes him on a vast quest across the world, to Shadow's doorstep, and beyond.

It is time for the unlikely innkeeper -- and you -- to Begin a New Quest.

This game features a fully new world and new characters but inspired by the Dragon Warrior series for the NES. On the quest, many familiar monsters, spells, equipment, graphics, and music will be encountered -- mixed in with some new creations of my own in all of these departments. The game features:

-30-40 hours of gameplay.
-Some original music and graphics along with many old favourites.
-A huge bestiary of over 300 monsters, each with a Monster Entry for the library at Elderwood hidden somewhere in the game.
-A carefully-balanced mix of open-world exploration and focused linearity.
-Various sidequests including the monster library, the alchemy pot, the lottery, optional dungeons, and more.
-Fully functioning features that any Dragon Warrior fan would expect, including the "Imperial Scrolls of Honour," losing half gold/keeping items and levels upon defeat in battle; individual items carried in battle; Houses of Healing; Outside, Return, Chance, Sacrifice, and Farewell spells; Battle Mechanics that have been carefully tinkered with to strongly feel balanced in the same way that Dragon Warrior games originally were.
-A branching story with multiple endings and substantial postgame material, including bonus characters and a challenge boss.
-A packed-in world map. :)

I just encountered a bug that was odd. I found a secret room in Balghast castle behind a pillar but got into a fight while on the transfer point.
Then I couldn't leave the room via door/stairs and had to use outside to get out.
You really should make battles impossible at transfer points.

And:
Don't you think Healusall is too expensive to use? It costs 62 MP that complies with 1/6 of Cassandra's actual MP or 4x Healus.
Perhaps you twisted the numbers? 26 MP sounds much better.
Edit: At least there is the Sage's Focus. With this the costs drop to 46 MP.
I just updated the walkthrough with the last dungeon.
So it's only the postgame that's still missing.

Thanks Firefly!

Actually, on just about any transfer points where it would screw up the game, it is impossible to get into a battle. I position events in the tiles around each to artificially increase the step counter to the next battle so typically it cannot happen - but you found a rare one that I must have missed. Thank you.

***Edit: Actually, I didn't miss that one - so I'm actually perplexed as to what happened there, unless there was some funky battle-related event overlapping/interference happening, something that I haven't experienced in a while of playtesting. Sorry that you got unlucky, but I don't have an explanation offhand. Are you using any atypical abilities that might influence battles? For example, are you running around with the Golden Claw, or are you using the Padfoot ability, or something else I'm not remembering? I wonder if there's a flaw in the coding for some obscure element somewhere...

As a sidenote, every single transfer point on the World Map used to be surrounded by similar tiles that prevent battles. The problem was that having so many created a lot of lag, unfortunately, at least on my machine. So, I removed many of the ones that wouldn't screw up the game in some odd way.

I personally feel that Healusall is insanely useful and thus should be extremely expensive. 62 MP is exactly the same as the price of Healusall in Dragon Warrior 3, and in fact, it is much more expensive (128 MP I believe?) in Dragon Quest 9. Given that there are generally ways to restore MP as well, I think it's important to keep it pretty pricey for balance reasons. :)

Thanks for keeping that walkthrough going! Much appreciated.

PS: Yeah, those Red Dragons are intense. I've actually considered backing down to a set of Green Dragons, then a set of Blue, then a set of Red... rather than repeated sets of Red... and maybe sets of three instead of four. I don't want it to be impossible - just very tough.

I have the Golden Claw. I encountered this bug often, but it never stopped me from entering a transfer point again.
That's why I tried the secret passage again and then I could venture deeper.

It seems to be no problem on the worldmap but only in dungeons...
Cool, thanks for the info. I'll look into it!
Anywhere to get a world map ? Thanx - Dennis
Look into your folder. There is one!
I'm at the Shrine of Rubiss - I've gone threw the walkthrough and the blog - I cannot find a Mysterious Stonekey - so cannot progress threw the stars. Any help - Thanx - Dennis

Have been to the Medal King Castle (look in the walkthrough)? You get the stonekey for investing 50 Small Medals.
Be carefull what you buy, like some rubber hats, the rattle, an Ice dagger (or similar) for the alchemy pot...
Thanx - I didn't see the part about 50 medals !! What is your opinion about the Golden Claw ? Would you keep it or get rid of it. Every few steps - have to fight - gets old !!

I didn't mind mind having it (I experienced worse).
If you find it too nerving sell it (or don't get it in the first place)
But it will help you getting some necessary drops for the alchemy pot (still missing one ingredient).
My goal is to grind (and getting this last ingredient) and defeat Rubiss in the post game.
My advice is to listen to Firefly, who invested an insane amount of time and effort into this game!

Personally, when I've playtested, I've grabbed the Golden Claw, and just immediately cast Outside/Return and then sold it. A store will pay a very handsome sum of money indeed! However, it would be really useful if you're into the heavy grind (and, there is only one in the whole game). :)
There's another way "to get rid of" the Golden Claw without losing (selling) it, but it only works during the post-game. If you have recruited a suitable character during the post-game, put him in your active party, give him the Golden Claw (can be equipped as a weapon) and then remove him from your active party. VoilĂ , you still own the Golden Claw without being burdened by its effect.
If you enjoyed Dragon Warrior: Begin a New Quest and want to try out one of Wonderslime's earlier works, I recommend The Lost Legend IV, The Guardian of Light, a really good RPG Maker 2000 JRPG. This is a must-play for anyone who enjoys the aesthetics and mechanics of RPG Maker 2000 (which also means this game is more like a Final Fantasy fangame, but it still includes enemy slimes). I think the only way to download this game at the moment is via the Master List of the "obscure games request topic":

Thanks, Wonderslime, for granting us at least two superb old school JRPGs. Don't let your earlier works fade into obscurity. There are still people out there who appreciate these games even nowadays.
Wow, thank you so much KyleLascar for the shout-out -- that really means a lot. These games were both really near and dear to my heart, so it's cool to know that I have a few fans out there. I have more projects in mind, but none on the go. One day, when life settles down, I'll embark on the next. :)
Redownloaded this after I got distracted by other games. Determined to see it through this time! As if to spur me on, the game has been very generous. After a total of four lottery games, I won the golden ticket. A few more and I got a Ruby of Greater Protection and Meteorite Armband!

...although I may now have a gambling problem lol
Lucky!! I hope that you enjoy playing!

Let me know if you have any questions at all. :)
This was a great game to fall back on after finishing Dragon Quest 11. I wanted something challenging and retro... and it being a DQ fan game helped it fill the void. Fun stuff.
Thank you very much ClassicPixels. :)

As I'm playing through DQ11, I can't help but smile in the number of small similarities my game has to it in various ways. I mean, right from the start... King Carnelian, really!? The game has been such a trip so far.

I'm so glad you enjoyed my own contribution!
DW was my first RPG ever! Subbed and diggin' in!
