[[ UPDATE: Somehow this game won two Misaos: Trippiest Game and Best Shyamalan. I'm confused and appreciative. ]]

Epileptics beware: There’s a lot of flashing at points.

In honour of the release of Resident Evil 7... Enter the survival humour!

It's 2002. Jill and Tom have escaped the HELL of Umbrella to find the city crawling with flesh HUNGRY beasts, HIDDEN sex clubs, DEMONIC game show hosts and MATT LeBLANC (Lost in Space). Their mission: IT IS ESCAPE.

Will you help them survive the horror?

REISE is a bizarre mess that shouldn’t have been made. Starting life as the sequel to a terrible Resident Evil fan game from 2003, it gradually mutated into a Matt LeBlanc infested fever dream.

  • 5-7 hours long (really)

  • Offensive side quests

  • Haphazardly balanced combat

  • Occasionally funny dialogue

  • Bright colours

  • Play as Tom

  • Execution by flamethrower

  • 50% Horror; 50% stupidity

This game has been tested to a decent standard. I’m confident that most of the major bugs have been found and corrected. If you do discover something I’ve missed, please let me know. Also, this game was created with resources I’ve amassed over the years. Most of their origins are now unknown to me. If the original creator wants credited/ has objections, drop me a line.

REISE v1.03 update

* I played through the game on a Windows XP machine equipped with an Athlon XP 2600+ and 1GB of DDR RAM. I'm confident it will run on anything. *

==============
v1.03 changes
==============
1) Added Break Skills tutorial.
2) Added correct IF HERO facing conditions for troublesome doors/ objects. This prevents the player activating Touch Events by accident.
3) Removed the splash screens if a save is present. If a save is detected, the title menu will appear instantly.
4) Took 1 second off of the display time for Tom's tips.
5) Explained to the player how to end tape playback early.
6) Highlighted the door to the optional storage room in The Office area.
7) Highlighted the control panels in the Achievement Room.
8) *Hopefully* fixed various problems with the optional Ghost Hunting mini-game.
9) Added a side quest and a small area. They were in the original game plan, but I couldn’t be bothered until recently.

What is? Huntley, why?
It's a surrealist nonsense game that took much longer to make than you'd think. It's also strangely content rich. Huntley was just a name picked at random for the splash.
This is RPG Maker Hell and it looks glorious.

Ha ha, thanks. A friend I got to test it described it as "a vision of hell."
So I was taking a break from my Winterruptions game this morning and decided to try this.
I wasted my entire Saturday on this game and I have no regrets. I finished it.

Capsule review:
+ Matt Leblanc
+ The fact that it's totally like Resident Evil
+ You get to shoot Fred Durst in his stupid face. (With limp bizkit soundtrack)
+ A shark attacked me with a Frasier themed skill.
+ The combat skills are the best.
+ The cinematics and the writing.
+ You can tell a lot of work went into this.

- Killing and abusing children gets old after a while (I'm saying this because the game is so imaginative, I was a little disappointed that these jokes kept coming back)
- Gets a little tedious after the rocket, but the ending is the saving grace.
- Some of the skills are so great, it's a little disappointing that the skills you can acquire are rtp animations...

Favorite character:
Chris Lemmon I talked to him everytime just to see how he would justify his presence. Honorable mention: Tom's dialogs and tips are gud.

Favorite joke:
Jill: Something is wrong.
Tom: ?
Jill: ...
Jill: Ninjas are hiding here.

A few quesitons:
What was the point of the ghost side quest for Tom Gum?
Does something happen if you win his game show?
What was the point of freeing the girl from the locker, did I not finish the quest?
Though I wouldn't surprised if the answer to all of the above is doesn't matter

A bug:
Well there were a few but I'm pretty sure most of those were intentional. Christian Bale's square cannot be walked on after he disappears (nbd honestly).
The first shop dialog triggered when I was coming back from where the father is and I got stuck on the counter and had to return to the menu to load.

@Superstroke

Thanks for playing and reviewing my bizarre mess of a game. I really didn't think anybody would ever take the time to finish it. I'm glad you enjoyed it! I'm still not sure why I made it, though...

Answers:

1) I just wanted to add an unexpected, seedy area. Other than the "rewards" you gain access to in the corridor off reception, nothing. Maybe I should have Gums give the player a gold statue or fine art or something ha ha
2) Nah, not really. A line of text changes. It was really just an exercise in bizarreness.
3) It was just to show that Chairman Wow is a bad guy.

Also add my shortcomings as a designer to all of the above answers.

I also felt I'd put too many instances of child violence into the game. I made this game over a decent period of time, stopping and starting. I didn't notice how much had crept in until my final tests. By that point, I just wanted to release the thing. I'll investigate that bug.

Thank you!
Pfft, lol, what the hell…?

This kind of reminds me of the good ol’ days when everybody used to make these types of comedic games that were so damn unbelievably bad but so damn unbelievably good. It’s nice to see something like this again; it’s become a bit of a lost art form over the years, it seems.

I might have to give this a bit of a try in the future! I’ve never played a Resident Evil game before, but I would imagine that with this game I really don’t need to understand any of it to fully get what's going on here in order to have myself a good time.
@Addit

That's spot on. The general aesthetic is bad early 2000s RM fan game + unnecessary darkness. I miss those type of games as well. Games that had soundtracks composed of Linkin Park/ FF7 midis.

No previous knowledge of Resident Evil needed ha ha
I miss these games as well..back then there was a lot of WTF humor, and hilarious Midi Music, and sometimes WAV tracks from bands.

I remember this one game right at the beginning that you fight this bald Midget while a Kid Rock Song was playing..that was damn hilarious.

Hey, Iron Gaia had that, and it was legitimately good! Of course, it wasn't a fangame either.

Either way, though, I'm passing on this, no offense. As much as I hate to see new games go unreviewed on here, I don't think I can handle any more of this general kind of game after Fragile Hearts and Aorta. Addit is apparently planning to review this anyway, and should handle this much better then I would.

Also, is it same Matt LeBlanc who was in the "new" post-Clarkson Top Gear last year, or am I thinking of a different one?
@NTC3

Don't get me wrong, I love those type of games. First thing I did when I got the net back in the day was look for FF midis ha ha Midis have charm.

Same one. The Matt LeBlanc from Ed (1996).

Also, I forgot to mention and while we're on the topic on soundtracks, I loved that you used pieces from the Beyond the Black Rainbow OST.
