Made for the Winterruption event, did not meet the deadline.

Story: A game by unity! Yay! I played the game at Normal difficulty. You play the hero, who has just joined the Questing Guild.


Your sephiroth is showing.


Naturally, you're the strong and silent type. At the beginning, you meet Gertrude, who introduces you to Anisa, who vaguely reminds me of Ruby from Final Fantasy IX. That's only temporary though. Anisa is just going to help you find your real partner, Valle, and then she's the other person behind the counter with the guy who looks like he has a ginormous sword sticking out of his head.

Since this is a Winterruption game, it's all about those quests, 'bout those quests, no big arcs. Of course, as is typical in a unity game, you've got a ne'erdowell trying to summon (insert chosen ancient evil/monster/legendary creature/Eldritch Horror here), but that's not really the point of the game, since you'd never even come across this guy if you didn't take all of these quests.


Slimes! The go to RPG monster since 1986.


Gameplay: You play the hero, so naturally, you decide what you look like and what your name is. Now, you don't have an elaborate face generator, but you have a modest selection of sprites to choose from in the beginning. Way cool. The game seems to use the standard combat system gussied up with the Yanfly Battle Ace Engine. Your leveling and combat is as standard as it comes, with your characters learning spells with almost every level up a la Dragon Warrior, but as usual with any unity title, it's not the standard mechanics that define a game; it's what you do with them, and unity creates a wonderful, and truly enjoyable experience. The abilities are imaginative and well balanced, and the creature weaknesses and strengths are easy to categorize. Unity also includes a mechanic whereby creature encounter rates go down the more fights you win.

My one problem is the use of TP for certain skills. Instead of retaining your TP from previous battles, your TP resets to a random number. This makes it nearly impossible to ever get the chance to use some of your stronger techniques that require high TP, since your TP goes up very slowly, and you will often vanquish even the most challenging boss before you ever get a chance to use them, making it pointless to even have the ability.


Oh, it's just so, like, totally cool, fer shur! I mean, like, OH, my GOD!


Graphics: Standard style sprites (I've heard them referred to as Mack sprites; I won't call them RTP anymore, unless they are specifically from the RTP) are used. JoSe is making the facechips, but that hasn't been finished yet. Still because a future version the game is scheduled, I'm offering a little bit of leeway on scoring for graphics. No word on if the sprites, which clash quite a bit with the tiles and background, will be updated. The tiles are done in a childlike, painterly style that fit the style of the game very nicely.


Please, people, buy something from her. I hear she lost her arms in a tragic chibi accident.


Music: I'm sure I've heard this music pack before, but I can't place it (probably because I haven't been working with the music packs a lot). It works very nicely with the game, though it lacks a sense of whimsy I think that this game could benefit from. It helps to set the mood nicely and doesn't intrude on the overall feel.


My husband could be dead. Haul his good for nothing ass back here right now!


Conclusion: This game is a perfect unity short to pass the time. It's fast-paced, interesting, and never gets boring. I'm wondering if unity ever gets tired of getting high scores on her games?

To address some of your points, TP doesn't actually randomize after battle. It is simply reduced by 40%. However, in hindsight, this still causes much of the same problem, so I'm going to reduce the amount it cuts, say maybe to 20%, so players don't lose so much of it after battle. I'm also adding in a somewhat rare item that will give you a lot of TP when eaten. ^_^

The sprites are, unfortunately, not getting a makeover like the facesets are. I agree that they stick out a bit, and if I continue to use this style of tilesets in the future (I think it would be fun to put them in another game), I'm really going to have to figure out a better way to make matching character sprites, perhaps by drawing them by hand myself in the same manner, if I can get that to look somewhat decent.
