Sacred Reviews: Quest Questers v1.05

Introduction

In a way I feel like the ugly duckling when it comes to reviewing this game. Not because my opinion of this game is that's hot garbage and should be quickly flushed down the nearest toilet, but that I'm the only person to review this game so far that has apparently cleared it on its highest difficulty setting, Nightmare. Though, I suppose not everyone is as much of a glutton for pain as I am. Regardless, I should probably delve into my thoughts on the game itself then contemplate my apparent love for video game masochism.

Story

In the words of Tristan Taylor from Yu-Gi-Oh! Abridged, "Just #$%@ already!

On the story side of things Quest Questers is a bit on the weak side since it lacks a truly overarching main plot, but I really can't hold this against the game since it was created for the Winterruption event. An event focused on building a game entirely out of side quests. And even despite that handicap the game manages to bind the various side quests together well enough to make the game work. In fact, the nature of the game reminds me a lot of "Atelier Iris 3: Grand Phantasm" in terms of its structure. Since both games put the bulk of their character development and buildup into the side characters as well as place a heavy emphasis on taking on side quests in order to improve your characters in order to beat the big bad waiting for you at the end of the game. After all, the final "bonus" quest definitely feels like something that would take place at the end of a more traditional RPG adventure.

Gameplay

On the combat side of things "Quest Questers" features the standard combat system you'll see used in most turn-based RPGs made with RPG Maker VX Ace. As such, I really don't have that much I want to say about this aspect of the game. This isn't to say that the combat is bad in a way, but that it's similar to so many other games that I find it rather boring to discuss. Albeit, the highest difficult level did give me pause at times. So, it can definitely throw a monkey wrench or two at you if your careless on nightmare mode, but never enough one to truly make you shudder like Dark Souls or some other games on this site. Though most of the games on this site that can make me shudder are usually born from a combat system that is horribly broken.

Graphics

Where "Quest Questers" really shines is in terms of its graphics. After all, the game clearly features some custom tilesets which give the game a unique identity and helps it stand out from the sea of RPG Maker games made with the default assets that come with the program. Albeit this game does feature a few hiccups in this area as well. The main problem being how the character sprites and facesets really clash with the direction the monsters and tilesets went in. And the game includes a few rooms that are identical in terms of layout in order to save on time, but does manage to turn this into a much less egregious mistake in my opinion by breaking the 4th wall in order to make a minor joke about it.

Conclusion

"Quest Questers" is a relatively solid game that has a narrative that's worth taking a look at as well as an art style that helps sell the game as a somewhat unique experience. On the downside the combat in this game is the standard system you'll see in a lot of other projects. As such, the combat isn't particularly interesting for someone's whose been around the block a dozen times over. And while the story isn't bad, it pales in comparison to titles like "Luxaren Allure". As such, I'd recommend this game, but only after taking a look at titles with a much stronger narratives to support them.

Thanks very much for the review, Sacred! ^_^ I agree with what you've said here, the clashing assets are def a problem and the story/writing is a bit weak. I've never played Atelier Iris 3: Grand Phantasm, but now I'm curious to so I can see how they pulled it off.

Thanks again, and congrats for beating it on Nightmare mode :DDDD
"I've never played Atelier Iris 3: Grand Phantasm, but now I'm curious to so I can see how they pulled it off."

I've done a Let's Play for that game. Though, I did miss a few of the random characterization scenes that pop up when you complete random quests for certain townspeople.

And, if you'd rather play the game yourself then watch someone else. I'd recommend on saving up some of your rarer items since you need to complete every mission with a green boot next to it in order to get the good ending.

As far as the narrative went. They probably pulled it off just as well or a bit worse then you did. After all, while Atelier Iris 3 does have a larger cast of side characters to develop. It also has to deal with being a full length RPG as well. Albeit, it does have a better battle system to help carry it. As well as the relative freedom to mod your own gear through the power of synthesis.

And an insane super boss in the form of the super mini puni. So yeah, the game's ultimate super boss is a pacifier sucking slime.
