Run & gun & colors!

Color of Damnation ACE is a shooter game made by Tw0Face and Razor_ ... using RPG Maker VX Ace of course, and developed in 2017/2018, but you know, I was looking for some mindless shooting so I tried this game only recently.

Ok, but that's the title about?
We basically play as Marco Bronco, a skilled gunman that is kidnapped by aliens (!) in a flying saucer because they need help (!). Well that's apparently reassuring since this does non involve probes, anyway the problem is that a plague is ravaging turning people into colored monsters. And each monster can be killed only by bullets of the same color, so what do you think will happen now? Our hero gets ready to find a bunch of colored bullets to put an end to this problem!

There are three player modes, and I will review that in reverse order: Simulator, Survival and Damnation.
- Simulator is basically a five stages tutorial that will teach the basics of the game, explaining commands, bonus and malus. Not much to say about this, I guess, but very useful to learn the ropes.
- Survival is an infinite mode where you have to endure endless waves of enemies to beat your record.
- Damnation is instead the real "meat" of the game, the story mode that is divided into ten levels (plus a secret one).

Yellow bullet kills yellow guy, Blue bullet kills blue guy! I got it...

Here we have levels that start easy and become more and more difficult, even if the objective is always the same: we're in an arena, alone against many creatures (that resemble the classic Rm2k warrior) of different colors, and we have three minutes to kill them all, while avoiding being defeated by the horde of enemies. Easy? Well not so much!

First, we start with no bullets, and the first thing to do is locate and collect the bullets that have the same colors of the enemies. Second, shoot them. At the same time it's important to move around collecting every bonus and avoiding every malus. I won't tell you every items we can find scattered around, but just some: there is an item that temporarily freezes the opponents, one that makes us faster and one that makes us so slow that will probably cause instant defeat in most cases (happened to me 80-90% of times). There is the dynamite that will damage us, and time bombs that instead can be used against the enemies: these are a bit imprecise since you have to calculate the time and attract as many enemies as possible towards them, but luckily they are "color agnostic" so they can be useful to damage some opponents or even kill the wounded ones (I was able to kill three already wounded enemies with a single bomb, but I was lucky!).
On the other hand bullets are infinite, but you have to take advantage of the "S" key to keep the aim towards a direction and shoot the horde of approaching enemies with the "D" key. "A" is used instead to change the color of the bullets used. Very easy, very simple but still fast and furious. Especially after level five defeating all enemies and survive will become really challenging!
Luckily you can collect money from fallen foes, used to buy some bonus before each round.

So this was the gameplay. For what concerns music and visuals I find all very appropriate, even if it's a mish-mash of Rtps, edits and custom parts, but the final result is coherent and without problems of any kind. There's not much to say about mapping since the combat is done inside large arenas, they are clearly different but from what I've seen the disposition of the items on the ground does not change, so it's a good idea taking note of where are the things to collect and where those to avoid.

... but things aren't always as simple as I expected!

Final Verdict
Colors of Damnation is this: a simple old-style arcade game that requires skill and quickness. It's a nice game but do not expect something really complex or varied, anyway as an arena shooter it's pretty well done and polished (considering also that this engine, RPG Maker VX Ace , isn't clearl made for this kind of games). Only problem may be the english translation that could have been probably perfected, since it was originally made in german, but it's not the story or the dialogues that are important in this kind of action games.

In the end this was a nice, simple but very challenging entry.

Hi and thank you very much for the review. I didn't expect to get another review for this game. Unfortunately, back in the earlier days, my English wasn't as good as it is now. Maybe I'll improve this one day. Anyway, nice to hear that you enjoyed the game.
