I like the monster and simplistic appeal. That said, enlarge the player´s combat pictures. Also, make the selector color different so it´s easier to navigate the menu.

The player's combat pictures will surely be replaced by actual portraits sometime soon.

By selector color do you mean the color of the bar that highlights what you're choosing in the menu?
