Demo Patch 1.42 (Monster Manual Fix)

This patch adds and fixes the following

Fixes
- Monster manual glitch, it adds a Eraser Item that resets the monster manual. You can now use this to continue with Newer Patches. You must use the item before going into a battle If the monster is new or a name was changed.

This is added to your party upon entering the overworld. (check key items after leaving the town/castle)
There will be books scattered in the Demo that permanently adds monsters to the book so the reset will only reset how many you have beat once you read them.

The book that adds all monsters in the demo is found in the Bazaar. Check the bookshelves.

-Quickwiz can now slow you down also. Using a warpwing or casting return won't reset the effect anymore.

-The Duel Battles (Tangtl Castle) and Wildslime battles should not freeze up anymore.

-Previous saves (1.3 and up) can now be used, You need to use the Erase Item once you leave the castle/town.

Changes
The Escape rate has been tweaked. Each failed attempt will add 20% success on the next escape attempt during the battle.

Problem:
I healed and saved before choosing a root and now they are gone.

Another good find, I'd always choose a root before leaving. I'll make it so it forces you to choose.

Hmm that script keeps giving people trouble. It works for me which download are you using? Try re downloading the file and placing the save file there?

I'm testing it and I'm not getting that issue.
This is for anyone who finds escaping some battles tedious. Dragon Quest is kinda strange about escaping. (I was playing DQ 3, my party was past level 10 and I couldn't escape 3 slimes! Took me 4 attempts.

RPG maker sets the escape ratio based off the enemies agility divided by the parties agility. This is then subtracted from a Variable X the remainder is the probability of escape. (So 1.4 + 30/25) you have a 20% chance of escaping

There's also a feature that adds a percentage for each time you fail to escape, 10% currently. This means you can escape eventually.... After 5 attempts you should have a 50% chance of escaping. Assuming you started with a 0% chance of escape. (chances of escape can be a negative percent also)

I think I can tweak it to instead roll a random variable based on the players level that determines the escape rate for that turn in the event they fail to run the first time.
Now on to annoying enemies.

Healers/Healslime:
The healer enemies AI is set to attack only if no other monster is hurt.
This makes for escaping them tedious and killing them annoying when there's only one or two left with damage. If you are out of MP and it's only the Hero and Riara, not fun.

Suggestions for Healers:

-Have at least two substantial hits on them or on really good one. (Johan's BiAttack)(Riara's Icebolt followed up with an Attack.)(Hero's ChargeUp and attack)
-Exploit the healers need to heal their ally who's hurt most. (Boomerang does this forcing them to not heal themselves)
-Cast Expel.
-Cast Sleep, then attack them.
-BugPowder, confused monsters only attack

Yes, Its until I figure out the next floor's puzzle. I think I'll have those floor moving tiles :D. That or something that will require you having a certain item.

(Sky Shield to summon a cloud to go over gaps)
(Tidal Bell to summon a shell to float over water)
So I've gotten through a good chunk of the demo, and while I want to get around to a full review when I finish it, I thought I'd bring up a few things:

Right now, the main thing that's keeping me from finishing the demo is the grind and the difficulty spikes. Now, I'm a pretty hardened Dragon Quest veteran and I usually know to expect the worst when it comes to these games, but there's a few design quirks that kind of bother me.

One of the big problems is that it takes too long to gain access to any sort of AOE move, the first which seems to be buying the Boomerang in Tuu. Up until then, battles generally consist of spamming the attack command on upwards of 4-5 monsters in every fight. Once you get the boomerang, grinding is much less tedious. The thing is that many Dragon Quest games do, indeed, throw large groups of monsters at you, but they either A.) Wait until later in the game when you have a full party assembled or B.) In the case of Dragon Quest III, you can assemble a full party right from the start to properly deal with 6+ enemies at a time.

But since it takes a while to get your second party member (who not only has zero damage output until she levels up but also seems to be completely missable to begin with), battles just go on for way too long, especially considering how much EXP it takes to level up. The cave west of Tuu felt like a slog; even with a boomerang and the best armor available, it wasnt much more than attacking and hoping Riara didn't die, or run out of MP on a fight against healers, since they would subsequently become virtually unkillable. I really recommend giving Riara access to more weapons than just the cypress stick, because if she runs out of what little MP she has, she's basically a sitting duck. (EDIT: In theory, she could also use items. But there were fights where the Item command bugged out and didn't work at all.)

THAT SAID, This game has a ton of potential and it emulates Dragon Quest amazingly well. There is so much attention to detail and you've definitely done your homework here. And I really think if you can sort out the first couple of hours of tedium and frustration, Starry Legend will be one of the best Dragon Quest fangames to come by in a long time.
You have missed Tega in Loran who would accompany you until the warp shrine.
And for 400 Gold you can hire Johan in Tuu after your talk to the King of Tangtl.

I never had problems with using items in battles.
Once Riara learns Heal and Fireball, she is really useful. Together with the Boomerang she will kill most of the enemies. Johan and later the 4th character should concentrate on the healers or the more resistant enemies. Well the 4th isn't controllable so...
Miles even learns Fireball. So until you got the Boomerang...

As for really hard battles wait until you do the 2 sidequests. There is a third which isn't complete yet.
@SgtMettool
I can see what you mean in terms on monster troop sizes. I may make 3-4 monster troops more likely to appear. I just didn't want it to be too easy. I'm going to edit the monster troops for the next demo.

I'm adding monster recruiting, thing is I'm still deciding where to activate that during the game. (I want a DQ5/DQM3 style of recruit system) This will help with the party lacking members at certain points in the game.

There's 3 non monster recruits before rock pass.

spoilers
Tega*- Joins you to reach the warp shrine, after you meet Loran King. Leaves after, but he's a great asset to help yourself grind a few levels on the Loran Continent. (Monster manual helps with seeing which monsters give the most EXP)

Riara- The Pixy battle is a little hard, I'd say be level 5 for this fight (you have the Heal spell and should have enough gold for better armor). Riara is level 4, and learns Icebolt at the next level. Here attack is pretty abysmal I may make her a little stronger. The Meadow area contains a secret shop that may activate when you walk in I'll probably add a sound effect when you enter and are transferred there instead of Riara's area.

Johan*- You meet Johan in the games prologue, talking to him during the prolouge makes his joining fee much cheaper (400G instead of 800G)

* only in the party until certain events occur

Right after clearing rock pass is the 4th human recruit. There will also be one in the Casino, but not in this current demo.

The Hero also get the Expel spell at level 6, I may make it level 5 and make it cost 3 MP like in DQ 3.

It's an early demo so best thing is there's plenty of room for changes.
Ahhh alright.

I actually did recruit Tega on my second attempt at the game, but it's awfully vague about the fact that he can join at all. I only learned about it from reading the comments in this thread.

I'm not sure if his recruitment was intended to be hidden or not, because I can't recall if the King hints at any reason to go back to the first town. I think if the King said something like "You should say goodbye to your friends and family before you leave" I'd probably have more incentive to backtrack. You could probably pair this with having Tega and Ava alongside the hero's mom and they all come to see you off on your adventure before you leave.

Riara is an interesting case, because she appears in the clearing. After the fight, I didn't have a Strong Herb on me, so I went back to town to get one. Upon returning, I found the secret shop, and Riara was nowhere to be found, no matter how many times I re-entered the clearing. I was under the impression at that point that if you didn't bring a Strong Herb with you, you would permanently miss recruiting her. I don't know if this is a bug or not.

Ahh I see your problem.

Spoilers
There's a StrongHerb hidden in the meadow you find her. The single sand patch to the right.

A random variable roll determines if you find the secret shop upon entering the meadow. However, Riara will disappear if you activate Yidna's Quest. (the medicine quest in Kanata)

You got lucky and it just happened to land on the number for the secret shop multiple times in a row. I'll definitely add more hints for the next demo and switch some things up.

I'll do what you said have the Loran King tell you to say your goodbyes. (you won't have to progress, but players will be more likely to speak with the people of Loran Village and see Tega's offer)

For Tega:
When Miles leaves the Castle of Loran he said he should talk to the villagers again before leaving to Tangtl. (Easily to be missed)

For Riara:
You can find a Strong Herb on the same Map for free (look for some space between trees on the right side).
I found the secret shop at night, at day I found Riara or later the sidequest enemies.

You can find 12 TinyMedals in this demo:
1. Loran well, map with chest, left behind the block of rocks.
2. Loran at night, cupboard of the sleepless man.
3. Vase/pot in the basement of Loran Castle.
4. Guard in the tower of Tangtl Castle when you have talked to his wife in Loran.
5. Inn of Jand, top floor in a cupboard.
6. Southeast house of Jand between wall and trees (at the right side).
7. Kanata Inn, cupboard.
8. Kanata at night, in front of the cat (it scratches in the sand).
9. The Bazaar (the monster at night gives you a tip where to search). Walk from the bottem line of the pond to the end of the medium dark sand tiles.
10. & 11. Canniboxes in Rock Pass (you need the rope from the informant in Tangtl).
12. Warp Shrine north of Tangtl in a cupboard after finding the Thief's Key.
Are you alive slimeborgi and is your game fully complete yet?
