Press P for Perfection!

Name: Amort

Developers: Superstroke, CashmereCat, zDS, and ESBY.

Story: Made for McBacon Jam 4. Lycia tends to the well-being of her ex-husband, Morgan, who's incredibly ill. The Postman has a package to deliver and Morgan is convinced the Postman killed his mother. Lycia thinks he's just delirious from sickness, which in fact, he is, but when she meets the Postman, she discovers that Morgan's right. This sets Lycia on a quest killing one person after another in a quest to keep herself and her ex-husband safe.

Let me guess who this one true leader is...
Yeah, I totally called this one.

Writing: Nothing bad to say here. Beautifully executed. Perfect balances between simplicity and depth, camp and creep. The story manages to be wonderfully creepy while being delightfully silly. And the main character is taking everything so deadly serious.

Gameplay: Beautiful! Simply beautiful! Your most important tool here is perception. Press P, and if there are on screen options available, they'll light up. Battles depend entirely on what you do before hand, so checking everything out before a battle is a must. It's really a game of battles done as puzzles. Once you get into actual combat, your victory is going entirely depend on what you've done prior: actions that will debuff the enemy before you go into the battle occur in nearly every scenario except for with the Postman.

This is true, but you dropped it on the guy you need to kill, so that's a plus...

With the exception of your Broken Heirloom, all weapons are disposable, but most of it will be a bit more useful than the Broken Heirloom, but still, it's better to use that Broken Heirloom and save other equipment for the tougher, later fights.

Graphics: Oh, I love these graphics! The simple style really is beautiful, and learning that the team didn't work on this game except for a few days out of the whole six weeks really shows what a truly experienced and skilled group of people can do. Bravo, all four of you! Exceptionally well done!

Music: Again, I believe this is all custom, but don't quote me on that. I'm beginning to sound like a broken record here, but the music really does perfectly fit everything here.

Glitches: I think most of them have been fixed, but some objects still stay black if you use perception and then release P before they switch back to normal. There was an odd thing that happened to me where I lost the Broken Heirloom after the fight with the Postman, but I don't know if that happened to anyone else, and I don't know if they found the issue. Losing the Broken Heirloom made the game quite unwinnable. Even patches wouldn't bring it back, so if you lose it, you have no choice but to start over.

Conclusion: Can brilliant games be made in a hurry? Yes, they absolutely can, and in the must-play factor, this is right up there with Free Spirits and Notes on the Etgoesian Crisis. Very well done, and I absolutely recommend this game.

Oh, what a lovely enthusiasm.
I'm playing the game to write a review too (and a positive one), but now i'm afraid of ruining the perfect score.
My god, thanks for the super kind review Piano!

That line made me quite happy. You got what I was going for! I explained to my fellow teammates when I made this story, it was done at such a rapid rate I deemed it a "professional" version of my first childhood attempts at RPGs, which is making whatever crazy thing that comes to your mind and lack a hesitation or reflection upon it before putting it in.

Amort, to me, is improvisation in RPG form. I'm totally glad it made an impact on you, as we had no time to sit down and think about things.

I do believe we fixed up the broken heirloom glitch. I think the Post Man had one hp too many and you used Scold twice. That was my bad, as I made the fight before I properly limited the Perception skills haha. The rest of those pesky glitches will be fixed in due time.

Never EVER be afraid of ruining a perfect review score. I can't speak for the team (actually yes I can shh (jk)) but an additional review + additional feedback/responses is utterly welcome, no matter the score.

Thank you for playing this game and thank you for the review. I'm glad you enjoyed the story and the tile graphics, and the character graphics. The music was all custom, made by zDS and superstroke. The writing is mostly due to zDS being delightful. Tiles are by esby and zDS and I helped with the perception mechanic. Thanks again for your kind words.

Cap, do feel free to review this if you can, and don't worry at all about sullying a 5 score, since I like honest reviews and it is best to hear what everyone has to say about a game, not just from those who were completely enamoured by it. Plus, I like your writing so to have you review this would be a joy to read, no matter what the opinion is.
I totally agree with this review! However, I just finished the game and I have to admit I'm still deadly confused about what happened at the end and how you were able to call the ending. What happened to the folks in the town, and are they different than she remembered? Halp

The town is cursed and are under the thrall of some kind of Eldritch horror. It's basically a cult. Now, remember the prophesy: their true leader would emerge amongst a sea of burning skulls. Now, the presence of a true leader implies the presence of at least one false leader. I immediately took this to mean that the main character, Lycia is the one that the prophesy is talking about.

1. When Lycia sets the church on fire, she burns the whole family, including their skulls.

2. When she faces the "leader" she collects the skulls and kills him with them.

In both of these cases, she is emerging from burning skulls.

3. As the final confirmation, when she confronts the mayor, he dies and turns to dust.

Lycia has fulfilled the prophesy described in the church scene.
Piano nailed it. The fate of the town was ironic, as they worshiped their very demise. Pretty much the prophecy gave way to predict the end.

Those questions you are asking are meant to be asked. It's a sort of open ended thing. However, I tend to write things that are real in the worlds I make, so I prefer not to see it all as her madness but stuff that really happened.

Thank you both for responding!! I still have a question about whether or not these people were this way before though, when she had the nice memories of living in the town-- was it actually just an undeveloped sense of perception? And this question might not need an answer, but I wonder how the eldritch horror that possessed all those people feels about Lycia. What an interesting lady. I wonder what she'll do with her new power! I really enjoyed the game, thanks for making it!
