Where to go? Where to go?

The Other Adventurer is an indie game created in Sphere, making it the first game I have played in this engine. The best description I can use to summarize The Other Adventure is "Rogue-Like." While the game page does mention the ability to save near the starting position, dying in the game is pretty much a do over for everything you just did.

The Other Adventurer's combat takes place in real time. You walk around with the arrow keys and press the space bar to attack with your sword. Once you get the bow and some arrows you can press the Ctrl key to hit enemies from far away. The hit detection is pretty good in this game and it can feel satisfying to defeat those slime monsters.

The Other Adventurer uses a very simple tile design. It looks like a very old school 2D game. The graphics are pretty decent from my perspective, but maybe I don't mind simplistic designs. The background music, on the other hand, can get repetitive.

The Other Adventurer is a very maze like game (And you'll have no idea which way you're supposed to go.) There are many rooms, each with similar designs, and each having multiple ways to enter and exit them. The only reason you'll be able to progress is by looking at the mini map. This clearly shows you where you have been, making it easy to determine where you might need to go next. The mini map is a pretty important tool in this game. I found it a little frustrating that when you die you lose all your progress. This included your mini map, money you have collected, or important items you have purchased.

Now you know where to go.

Being a "Rogue-Like" game you'll get better with each try. I knew where I needed to go now to get that bow (But you can see all the places I wandered before finding it.) You can walk back to the buy the bow, but now you need money. To get money you need to fight enemies. Fighting enemies makes you potentially lose health. Losing health makes you die. And the save point isn't close by. To me this game was more like an exercise in frustration. I like to feel like the things I have done in a game actually mean something. I want to have a progression. And unless you play this game over and over a couple of time, you'll never get good enough to beat it. And for this reason I give The Other Adventurer a 1.5 / 5.

Interesting our views of it were a little different - possibly because I went west sooner rather than east and then went on to complete the game, I also didn't die at all.

Once you're about 15 minutes you learn what you're meant to do to progress - though it still involves going in circles a lot.

(also the whole game is intended as a prank - which I think it pulls of)

I think the save location should have been in the same room you started in - because without reading the description you'll just wander wherever. Also the save file should have been more of I'm going to turn off the game and play again later. This game would do well with a quick save or auto save feature that occurs after entering each room. When you die you can still go back to the start, but you still keep your stuff. I don't know, thought the game would have been easier to digest with something like that.
