Having trouble with Windows 8 and LAW? Read this!

I've heard from more then one person over Windows 8 causing problems with running Love and War (which is of course a RM2K game). A kind poster named CoolWind has shared a potential solution that worked for him. In his own words:

OK, I managed to solve this problem.
I'll try to explain so other people won't have the same issue I had.

Windows 8 seems to have two inherent problems with rm2k.

(a) The first problem is going to full screen mode, which causes the game to crash with the error: "DIRECTDRAW ERROR (DDERR_UNSUPPORTED)".
You can find the solution to this problem here: http://rpgmaker.net/forums/topics/10204/
The little program by "Cherry" works wonders.

(b) The second problem (which was what caused LaW to crash for me) is quite simple and annoying- windwos 8 seems to have no ability to play midi. In some games there won't be any music (sound effects will be present since they don't use the midi format). In windows XP there was a program that dealt with midi, so the RM2K games are trying to call for this program, which does not exist.

The solution to this requires two things:
1) A program that can run midi: http://coolsoft.altervista.org/en/virtualmidisynth
Be aware that you need to download a soundfont as well (you can find a list of those in the link I put above).
2) A program that sets your system to open midi files via the new program you just downloaded: http://www.benryves.com/products/vistamidi
I know it's called vista midi control, but it works perfectley fine for win8.

After you download both of those programs, you should open virtual midi synth and choose the sound font you wanted, than open vista midi control and choose virtual midi synth as your main program for midi files.

credit to this site (and an explanation that is more accurate than mine, but a bit technical): http://coolsoft.altervista.org/en/blog/2013/03/what-happened-midi-mapper-windows-8

This solved my problem.

Edit: Here is a nice tutorial for virtual midi synth:https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/midkar/conversations/messages/34524

Edit2: It seems you need to lower down the music a bit so you can hear the sfx and the voice actors. You can do it easily- after you open the game, look for a new systray icon called "CoolSoft VirtualMidiSynth - 1.9.0 (x86)", double click it and it will open a midi mixer, you can lower all music under master (or just certain parts of the music). Lower the "master" one untill you can her sfx.

Many thanks for the info, CoolWind!

Let's Play: Love and War!

Up and coming YouTuber TheRoschi has begun a Let's Play of Love and War: Act I! Four episodes are up so far. It looks like there are some problems with the font, but it seems it will get sorted out in future episodes, so hey! Consider checking it out, and if you feel so inclined, perhaps consider liking and subscribing to his channel. :) Here's Episode 1!

Happy Halloween!

This colored version was by Helrouis!

This colored version was by X-Calibar!

Lavie's going to get a lot of candy this year, I suspect! Witch-Lavie was drawn by Shiei, and Tifa-Lavie by Helrouis. Many thanks to both of them! (And if by some lucky chance anyone feels motivated to color the first one, please do and I'll put it up here as well!)

Happy Halloween, everyone!

By Sword and Spell, By Guile and Gun

Here's a cutscene that was made for an old Love and War forum RPG, "By Sword and Spell, by Guile and Gun" (S2G2 for short). I had planned to do multiple such cutscenes as the plot progressed (reflecting the decisions the players had made), but sadly, it seems it was not to be. Still thought it would be fun to upload this one, and offer a glimpse into a tale buried under the sands of time. Hope you enjoy, and many thanks to X-Calibar who once again recorded the video!

Love and War: Act I Complete!

Love and War: Act I is now finally complete!

Ten months after the original release, Act I is finally at 100%. All of the old picture cutscenes have been replaced, and a few new ones have been added, too. Some minor bugs have been fixed, a few battles have been tweaked for difficulty, and there's also a new intro available for your perusal, featuring new artwork from King-sama! Though I have no hard numbers to back this up, I think Act I may have the most cutscene artwork of any RM RPG. This is really thanks to the efforts of Reirei18 and King-sama, but I can't help but feel proud of this (potentially inaccurate!) fact. :)

Furthermore, after many months of toil and trouble, revision and editing, I present to you the official trailer for Act I! This trailer would not have been possible without the tireless efforts of LAW friend X-Calibar, who essentially turned my notes into the video you see before you. Many, many thanks, X-Calibar! Thanks must also go to King-sama, who provides more of his patented fabulous artwork. Wonderful work, King!

In any case I hope you enjoy, and I look forward to receiving any and all feedback. This one's for you, LAWyers and LAWyettes! :D

And if this doesn't convince Liberty to do a Let's Play, nothing will! ... *weeps*

Progress Report

Love and War: The Final Update

Hey everyone! Just thought I'd note that the last of the artwork for the picture cutscenes is now in my hands, at long last. It did take a while, but I will finally be able to release an updated and "complete" version of Act I in the near future. Of course, now is the time if you have any last minute suggestions for me: additions to Act I, bugs to fix, difficulties to tweak, anything along those lines. If you do have any questions or feedback, let me know!

Vote for your Favorite, New Fanfic

I mentioned this a while and a half ago, and thought I should bring an update: the "Vote for your Favorite II" contest ended, and the winner was a tie between Henrik, and Brigadier General Easton R. Stokel! Shmeckie has completed a cool pencil sketch of the two, which you can view here:

Hopefully someday I'll be able to add in a colored version!

Secondly, the indefatigable Professor Q has begun work on a Love and War fanfic! In fact he's already halfway through his story, which essentially follows his interpretation on what will happen in Act II and beyond! Very cool stuff indeed, and the first fanfic LAW has ever gotten, so I can't help but feel quite flattered. :D You can view it here: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/9118350/1/The-Romance-of-the-Way or more directly at the LAW forum here: http://antioch.snow-fall.com/law/forum/topic_show.pl?tid=35;pg=1 The latter includes my own occasional comments here and there, plus some truly groan-worthy jokes of mine (including a M*A*S*H reference of all things), which may actually steer you back towards the first link, now that I think about it! In any case if this sounds interesting to you, please do consider checking it out, and let the good Professor know what you think. :)

Sic transit gloria Featured Status

Oh, my Latin is so good.

I'd just like to thank RMN for making Love and War the featured game of November - it was very much appreciated! Thanks also to everyone who decided to take a chance, and download and play the revamped version of Act I. I hope you enjoyed it! I continue to welcome your comments, questions, kudos and constructive criticism. (And hey, if anyone feels motivated enough to submit a review, or reexamine an older one, that'd be pretty cool too!) Few things are more encouraging then getting an e-mail, or PM, or Facebook comment from a fan commenting on how they really liked such-and-such a part of the game. Brings a smile to my face every single time...

Once again, thank you everyone. :)

Vote for your Favorite II!

The Act I revamp has been out for a month, and reaction seems to be largely positive thus far! I have some good news on that mythical "patch" I mentioned a couple blogs ago; it may not be so mythical after all... Can't give any firm estimates on when it will be ready, but I've seen some encouraging progress very recently, so that should be cool. The patch will ideally add in the remaining artwork, some minor difficulty tweaks and bug fixes, and perhaps even some new music as well. If there's anything in particular you think the patch should address, please let me know!

So in celebration of the release, I'm announcing the second "Vote for your Favorite" contest! As in the last one, all you have to do is vote for whichever character in Act I of Love and War was your favorite, and that character will be immortalized in a new piece of artwork (drawn by Shmeckie, who did the last pic). It can be any character, from the lowliest of NPCs to the most major of main characters. The character who gets the most votes by the end of the month (October 31st, 2012) wins!

This time, I'm adding a bit of a twist as an experiment, however. If you just list the name of the character, you'll get a single vote. If you add in an explanation as to why you think this character should win however, your vote counts for double! (Please put in at least a little bit of thought into it; "just cuz" isn't going to cut it :P) Let's see how this ends up rocking the vote! :)

Love and War: Act I OUT!

Well now, it's been a long road, getting from there to here... It's been a long time, but my time is finally near! ...and before I quote any more of the intro to Star Trek: Enterprise, allow me to announce that the revamp of Love and War: Act I is out! http://rpgmaker.net/games/98/downloads/

Phew. Wipe-the-brow, am I right? This was a truly exhausting endeavor, begun in late 2010. Though I always tried to temper my optimism with realism, never did I think it would take almost two years to complete the "bells and whistles" of voice acting and new artwork (and the latter is technically not complete, oh well). The final script weighed in at over 1,600 voice acted lines, and 117 pages. Perhaps it's a minor miracle that the voice acting was completed at all, even with me making frantic cuts here and there, trying to reduce it to something more "manageable"! In the end, given the amount of frustration and heartache that was involved, I find myself wondering if it was worth it. I think so, in all honesty, I really do. Still, I'm not sure if I'll stick with voice acting in any of my future projects... so please, give me your feedback. Tell me what you think! I certainly like the voice acting, but do you? Feedback from you, the player, will very much influence my future decisions in that regard.

As I often do, I think I'm rambling incoherently here (need sleep), so I'll cut things short. I hesitate to ask this, but I figure it couldn't hurt too much... Times are kind of tough around my neck of the woods, and so if you happen to have a little extra money burning a hole in your PayPal account and are willing to part with it, I would greatly appreciate any contribution you might be willing to make (ofloveandwar@hotmail.com). A kind word or two would also certainly make my day. Even a kind thought would be nice! I, um, won't actually be able to hear your thoughts, but well... it's the thought that counts, right? Ba dum tish? :)

That should just about wrap things up. I am eternally grateful to all those who contributed to Team LAW, especially SGCN, without which this revamp would simply not have been possible. Please enjoy, let me know what you think, and I'll see you out there in the Kingdom of Galvenia!
