Game Title: Chii’s Challenge, Liberty
Synopsis: Wouldn’t it be great if you could redeem a simple mistake that changes your whole life? You are Chii – and in a fit of overconfidence, you fall down a pit. Using keys and some solid logic, you must find a way out again.
Story: Chii is not dark, or moody, or possessed, or suicidal. Nah, Chii is mad as hell and wants to get out! Really refreshing to just have a game that is a game sometimes.
Gameplay: The game is simple and non-threatening – suitable for young children to play and provides a nice gradual climb in thinking logically. The mechanisms are well-worn but very nicely put together: keys, doors, push-blocks, map-changing floor-tiles, locked barriers and teleporters: and that’s the neatest trick of this little gem – you will swear you have played this game before, but it is so nicely presented you still fall for its charms.
Look and feel: The wonderful graphics, with clear and simple feel you can imagine this being on a Gameboy. The wonderful Ozzed track compliments it well.
Summary: It is a wonderful game, and it is a nice little treasure, to lose yourself for 10 minutes in a lovely little tribute to how they used to make games. Chii’s Challenge is a real tribute to Chip’s Challenge and the look and feel are bang on.
As a rating, I would give this 4.0 / 5.0. It is done well, and you can respect how it is put together: there is some thought put into the gameplay as there is no plot or flashy game graphics to hide behind.
That said, surely I would not be alone in wanting to see a version of this game say about ten times bigger, with a rudimentary hub and a daft plot drizzled on top to drive the whole thing forward.
