Hero's Realm: Heroic Edition
I always wanted to publish a game based on everything I enjoyed as a kid. This will be the end result.

Lead four heroes and their teams against the evil forces of Mephistocles, the Lord of Demons in this retro-RPG adventure. Switch between the four heroes as you explore dungeons, ascend towers, spelunk caves, save villages and defeat the forces of evil! Reminiscent of classic NES/SNES-era RPGs, Hero's Realm is a fun romp in old-school RPG nostalgia.

  • Play as 4 powerful Heroes and their customizable party throughout a four chapter story, each with their own skillset & battle commands!
  • Come together in the final fifth to adventure with all four parties - switching between them anytime, even in boss battles!
  • Customize your heroes' party by selecting from 21 unique character classes split between the mage, warrior, and rogue specialties, including unlockable elite and master classes!

  • 25 character classes (12 base classes, 4 hero classes, 6 elite classes, 3 master classes)
  • Over 30 hours of game content and sidequests
  • Classic NES-era and SNES-era RPG gameplay
  • Multi-party switching system
  • Multi-party tactical battles
  • Expansive world map

Skills of an artist (Titlescreen)

So I finally sat down and started learning some basic pixel art (purchasing Aseprite, following some tutorials like finalbossblues and saint11 etc.). I do not have a knack for art. I try, but I know that my works are amateurish. But that's not going to stop me (at least, not yet)!

Anyway, after gaining the bare-minimum in proficiency with Aseprite, I tackled a long outstanding item - the actual titlescreen!

Now, your first impression should be to realize that it bares a shocking resemblance to the mockup that Ocean made for me back in 2018 (omg... 2018... *sigh*)

(comment on it here: https://rpgmaker.net/games/9906/images/81978/)

I mean, I loved it and it was always going to serve as my inspiration. Thanks Ocean!

Shortly after receiving it, in fact, I had created a "composition" in Photoshop using my preferred font (Optimus Princeps).

I had envisioned even back then that the base would be some fantasy-like setting (castles, fields, mountains, or the like), so I cleared out that area. I also LOVED the sword Ocean made (obviously. It is great). You can also see where I was experimenting with a "company" name using a font I made with my own handwriting (yes, my handwriting is that bad). I used one of those handwriting-to-font services. The font name is Gbone btw.

Yesterday (or was it the day before?), I took this base and began in earnest. I flattened the font and neatened up the edges, mocked up some mountains and hills, and a castle.

If it looks familiar, then you know about the Bavarian castle in Germany!

This image formed the basis for my composition and castle layout. I shrunk it down to 320x240 and did a quick trace/freehand on it, and referenced it when I was spriting the details.

Next, I added details to my mockup mountains. I had a lot of fun doing this. Natural scenes at a far distance is my wheelhouse. I also mimicked the style that Ocean made for the font. I think it turned out pretty great, myself. The title really pops.

I then got to work on adding detail to the castle itself. (FYI layers are your friend).

I am not terribly happen with the final result, to be honest. It is quite amateurish. The scale, perspective, colour, balance, lighting, and textures are all off (some a little, some a lot).

I debated (and am still debating, tbh) removing the castle entirely (despite working for hours on it) - I am that dissatisfied with it. I moved it around, tweak things a bit, tried making some forest/trees in the foreground, shrunk it to half-size to see if that helped, even tinted it to see if muting the colours would help. I just don't have the skill or experience to figure out what I need to do to make it better.

I probably shouldn't have tried to tackle something so complex mere weeks after starting my pixel art journey. Ah well. Perhaps I will revisit this titlescreen in the future.

For now - on to battle animations!

Thanks for reading.

I've got the tar
So psyched. This is one of the first rpgmaker games I ever played. And to this day its still probably in the top of its genre (snes style, characters on screen during fights, customizable classes, grindtastic romp genre?) ;P Anyway I've got a $20 framed on my wall, when hero's realm comes out I will break the glass

I'm psyched too. @kentona , should we expect this by 2019 or sooner?

A hero is neither late or early, but arrives exactly when he means to. (Late 2018 is an outside chance at this point but don't bet the farm on it. 2019 is more likely)

Thank you so much for that response. :D

RPG Maker 2k/2k3 for life, baby!!

This is really inspiring stuff. I look forward to the release.
I really can't wait to see how this turns out. With so many people claiming that menu based RPGs are bad design, and that good games can only be made with VX Ace and MV, I'm hoping this proves it all wrong.

welp, here's hoping
Have you considered using a 5-person battle system instead of the typical 4?
Having 20 characters might be a bit much (you already get 16 - 4 parties of 4. You really don't need any more than that). Besides, it'd mean having to figure out a lot of eventing to get it to work since the game is made in 2k3... which would be a hell of a lot of work.

I hadn't really considered that for this game. Unfortunately, as Liberty alluded to, this game is made in a old engine and is limited to a 4 person party. I'd most likely have to remake the game to be able to achieve that effect. If this game is able to make its money back, maybe the next one I will do 5 person party. Thanks for the input!

....slowly, yes.
What I would like to see is an option in the new game+ to reset everyone back to level 1.

But with the previously gained Master Classes from the start, and equipment. It could be an option in the beginning barracks where you originally chose your first group/s.

If not, no huge issue, I've been enjoying the game for a while, and have had multiple playthrough.
I tend to choose my groups by rolling dice. I'm planning on trying a joker run next perhaps followed by hero only run.

hmmm not a bad idea. I kind of wished that DQIX had this feature for new games. I will add this to my "nice-to-haves" list.
