Walking around Norsland

Avee has finished a few tiles for the overworld chipset this week, and I'd like to showcase them! Most of them were made from scratch (!), and others inspired by the RM2k3 RTP. Your feedback would be appreciated, in regards to shapes and color choices in particular.

I even did a quick video (I don't know how to do videos). It features the new worldmap tiles and Holdana's Theme by pianotm.

We are making progress!

it looks BEAUTIFUL! I'm surprised you're going through all this work of a remake and still keeping the rm 2k3 engine - i feel you could do so much more with MV, or even VX/Ace. but still very excited about this.
Holdana's theme is a real earworm. I love it!

Well, the thinking goes as such: the game is already made in RM2k3 (it just needs some polishing and tweaks). I am not terribly skilled with RMVXAce, and a complete novice in MV. But I suppose I could learn and redo it. Plus, Avee is working hard at making RM2k3 graphics! I think he'd kill me if I switched engines. :)

I do know that BadLuck made the leap to Unity for his current remake. That is a step too far for this project, though. Perhaps if this game makes some traction I will explore making my next game in a newer engine.

If I were to reset and remake this, I'd likely choose Ace. I have some familiarity with Ace, and the differences between 2k3 and Ace are smaller than other options and I feel like I could translate the game from 2k3 to Ace relatively smoothly. But...do I have the time to do this? (not really)
Looking super good! Can't wait to see my music in game as well. o:
Looking good! I never played the original but the remake is looks to be shaping up really nicely. I am waiting patiently for the release for it to sit in my game files because I am terrible at actually playing games...
Tiles are looking great, man. I'd kick the rooster/owl sound effects, though; I don't think they're really necessary and they're a bit cheesy (particularly the rooster). Maybe experiment with lowering the volume of the rooster if you're married to the idea.
Yeah, remove or lower the volume to the rooster.

Game is looking good yo.
This mostly looks great. I'm not crazy about the desert tile, personally. Not a fan of the repeated sand dune.
So pretty O.O

<3 Love. I think when this is done, I actually really need to give this a play.
And while not perfect, I actually have a real soft-spot for 2k3. Graphic-wise, anyway.

Ha! Good points. It seemed charming back in 2006.

All things considered, I think sticking with 2k3 is totally justified. Hero's Realm is already a finished, fully-functional game, and 2k/2k3 obviously suits its graphical style perfectly. A game like HR might not benefit much from switching to MV, unless there were serious reworks or new systems being added to the game.

(But with that said, I might be a bit biased XD)

The new tile-set looks fantastic. I agree about the sand being slightly monotonous, though. Consider adding 1-2 variations of the 16x16 texture you could mix in with the auto-tile.
Yeah 2k3 deserves to have at least one good commercial jRPG to represent it! HR will do~ Besides, there's something about the classic feel of 2k3 that just works with HR - being able to use a mouse and not being able to use midis would be really weird for this kind of classic game.
Reminds of of a game getting an HD remaster. Everything looks so sharp! With these beautiful tile sets it will be hard for hero's realm fans to hold-an-a their patience. ^.^
badumtsh

before you get too excited remember how slowly I work on projects these past 5 or so years.

hey now, what about BadLuck's Ara Fell?
Ah, I like Ara Fell as much as the next person, but I gotta admit to enjoying the simplicity and exploration-heaviness of HR a lot more. That, and I forgot about Ara Fell when I said that. (But still...)
Thank you for the feedback :)

I agree about the dunes, and they won't make sense for the small beaches. I'll try something else for the next update.
