Sacred Reviews: The Outcasts 2

Introduction

I suppose if there is one compliment I can give Redwall10, it's that he has a definite passion for creating video games. Sadly, this passion hasn't led to him developing games that are particularly worthy of praise. A fact, that is only made worse by the fact that redwall10 rarely learns from his mistakes.

Story

On the story side of things "The Outcasts 2" feels poorly written in every sense of the word. The game suffers from atrocious spelling and poor grammar, but even if you overlook those issues. The characters often times talk about the theft of the sword of darkness like it's only a potential problem and not an actual problem. Despite knowing it has fallen into the hands of someone that wants to use it.

Continuity Issues

This game features a lot of continuity issues both with the previous game and with other games in the series. I think, I'll focus on some of the more obvious ones for now.

1) Why wasn't the sword of darkness mentioned in the previous game. If it's so dangerous why wasn't Zio after it? And, if he already had it then why wasn't it mentioned.

2) Why are Chris and Ashley living in town? It was established in the last game that Queen Berry didn't want them living within the city limits on the grounds that it might lead to them being attacked by outside forces.

3) What happened to the holy equipment that Chris got in the last game?

4) What happened to the base that we used in the previous game?

5) What happened to everyone else that joined our ranks in the previous game?

6) Why does the opening prologue mention there being multiple gods if it was established in a previous "Outcast" game that the people that live in it's universe are follower's of the God of Abraham?

Gameplay

On the gameplay side of things "The Outcasts 2" is your standard turn-based RPG with all of the usual menus. Where the game goes horribly wrong is in terms of combat balance. Many of the enemies in the game can cast group attack spells. These spells easily hit for half of the parties HP. Combined with the fact these enemies usually attack in groups of three and are highly likely to cast such spells. You quickly come to realize that this game is near unbeatable.

Another issue that plagues the game is that it requires an excessive amount of grinding to properly outfit the party. An issue that feels all the more pronounced considering most of Redwall's games are rather short when you get right down to it. Yet, if you want to stand any chance of beating this game at all. You'd probably have clock in dozens hours of grinding because of the low stat growth. And, even if you had the patience to pull that off, I'm still not sure you could get around the high damage output of the group attack spells.

Graphics & Sound

In terms of visuals and background music the game is alright. An opinion that might bother some people seeing as how the enemies are obviously not from the RTP, but simply having enemies that aren't from the RTP isn't enough to impress me anymore.

Conclusion

"The Outcasts 2" is a mess in it's current state. The story needs both updating in terms of grammar and spelling, but also in terms of basic story telling. The game also suffers from balancing issues so bad the game is pretty much unbeatable. As it stands I can't recommend anyone play this game.

Suggestions

1) I'd honestly suggest that redwall creates a lore bible. Basically a text that contains all of the basics of the "Outcast" universe. A text that will help set the basis for any future stories and hopefully allow him to keep a consistent continuity going between games.

2) I'd also suggest that he gets someone or something to help him with his spelling and grammar.
