Heroes seek to escape rooms with no doors.

Sorceress Krysty’s Game Gale 2010 entry, Darkseed, is an atmospheric horror adventure game featuring artwork by renowned artist H.R. Giger that… oh, whoops, wrong game. Darkseed: Revival is a traditional-style science fiction RPG.

The player assumes the role of Jackson and Harry, two blonde bishonen badasses who are apparently part of some kind of master race who rely on cannibalism for sustenance. They have been locked in a science lab for three years, but today they will finally get a chance to escape and cut a bloody swath to freedom… if they can find the door that is.

Battles and Balance 1.5/5
Completely default RMXP mechanics at work in the battles, to the point where most of the skills’ names have not even been changed or altered. Each character had something called a “Psychosis” meter, but I had no idea what it did and it never seemed to affect anything even when full. The encounter rate is high but not unreasonable, enemies get stronger on each floor but never really pose much of a threat if you’re careful. Healing items are absurdly common so it is quite hard to actually die. A few encounters throw against huge numbers of enemies though, and if you’re not leveled properly you will be murdered. However, if you find the random weapons lying around, your characters’ offensive power will go through the roof and you’ll probably slaughter everything effortlessly except on the harder difficulties.

Level Design 0.5/5
Completely custom graphics here, they have an old school vibe that looks pretty decent, and the levels are littered with various objects you can examine to get conversations between your two characters. However, there is a very, very serious problem with the mapping here, and that is that often times you cannot distinguish doors from normal wall tiles. Having to guess where the door is located is completely absurd. When the basic navigation mechanics of your game is obscure, this makes the game virtually unplayable. This is particularly bad because the final door you have to go through is one of these invisible doors and is located in a very unobvious place. I only found it by accident.

There’s a door here, but you’d never know by looking.

On top of that, the three floors of the lab are repetitive to the point of being nearly identical-looking. All in all, even with the custom graphics this category is a mess.

Characters 3/5
It’s not all bad though. The characters in this game are fairly well-written, their dialogue is humorous and the characters have engaging chemistry. They talk like old friends and it was quite refreshing. I was really unable to distinguish any real personality differences between the two of them, they seemed rather similar, but this isn’t really an issue in such a short game.

Story 2/5:
The story is frankly quite bizarre, with something about some sort of…prophecy or something relating to the main characters. There are also a great many events referenced about the pasts of the protagonists, but nothing is ever explained about it in game. The characters seem vaguely completely aware that the plot makes no sense and lampoon this fact mercilessly.

Music and Sound 2.5/5:
Mostly techno sounding tracks for this game, the main theme for the levels is pretty catchy but the battle theme is quite grating.

Overall 1.5/5
The characters in this game are fairly well done, but almost everything else appears half-finished. With more work to the battle system and fixing some glaring flaws with the mapping, this could have been a decent game. But as it is, aside from the custom graphics and some humorous and quirky dialogue, there just isn’t much going on here.

booooooo this game wasn't bad compared to most game on this site it deserves a much better review.
but i agree it was kind of lacking in story :/
>.>(it deserved at least 3 stars for not feeding someones sexual fantasies those games are yuck)
Perhaps a new set of standards should be applied to the Game Gale contestants, there has been quite the slew of negative reviews for many of them which I don't think is fair given the short amount of time they were in production.

I agree with that. Apples can't be compared to oranges, figuratively speaking. As it is, it'll most surely discourage future participation in similar events. I bet those who didn't submit an entry on time but do release it later will be able to produce better, more developed and polished releases, given that they didn't have the time constraint and pressure involved.

On the other hand, at least people who submitted entries are getting some kind of feedback, although they should be careful on how they digest it. The fact they submitted should be applauded.

Completely disagree here. Game Gale was a contest and nobody is expecting masterpieces, but that doesn't mean they should be elevated above other much more playable games just because they were made for a contest. This site has a much broader user base than the active forum goers who tend to be the ones who participate and follow this kind of thing. It's unfair for the site's average user to have to try and apply some 'contest standards' when they're trying to search for something to play.

Nobody said I was the divine arbiter of all that is good. Everyone is completely free to write their own reviews. In fact, I encourage it!
It was just a suggestion, in truth I don't know exactly how it would be applied anyhow.
Maybe RMN4 will have red starred scores for games done under constraints or something :P

I apologise for the system and the mapping flaws. As a developer these are my two weakest points and I acknowledge this. In a game made in this time frame I guess it really stands out. If I had been producing this game in an unrestricted time frame I probably would've done something a bit more elaborate, however I have extreme issues with getting everything to work. To this day, I have not gotten any of the systems in any of my 'big' games completely functional and how I would like it.

On the difficulty side of things when I got the the end of the initial version I had no potions and I couldn't beat the final boss. I guess I ended up making things too easy in this respect, but I prefer the game to be completable rather than difficult. On any higher difficulty the game becomes a hard slog and I guess I tried to compensate for that as well.

As a side note, the Psychosis bar was sort of like a Limit Break. Pressing right on the Skill command opens the Psychosis menu, allowing use of attacks that heal your characters as well as damaging the enemies.

Thank you for the review- I will take it as a good reference to improve my future games. My door issues are a priority, heh.

No worries, practice makes perfect, right? I am sure your future games will improve as a result of the time you spent on this one. For the record I don't think this is a bad game, it was around average except for the really bad mapping issues, and I did really like the dialogue. I am interested in seeing your other projects after playing this, just hopefully they have non-invisible doors! =)
