It was a tumultuous time to be an RPG fan back in the 1990's. In fact, for a lot of us old timers around here the 1990's were pretty the golden age of gaming where it wasn't all about the high resolution graphics of today or the "Hey, look, I can move in 12 different directions now" – it was about the memorable experiences and the incredible leaps of innovation that gaming companies strived to achieve back then.
Simplified/Tactical Combat
If I tell you that your opponent has 248 HP, and you can use a special, one-use item, or a spell, or something, that deals 85 damage... is that a lot? It kind of seems like it, but what % of their total life is 85 damage? You could try to multiply 85 by a couple numbers and see what's close, but the point is that this is not intuitive; most people won't do it. If, instead, the enemy had 10 HP, and this attack dealt 3, things are suddenly much more immediately clear. Your brain can deal with small numbers like this much more easily.
(Bad) Company!
Hey everyone. Hope you're doing well. The past two weeks have seen me work my butt off in designing the characters for the Adult Arc. I've been drawing, erasing, redrawing, erasing again, smashing random objects in frustration relaxing with a cup of tea when I get irked by the lack of progress. Today, I finally have something to show you. These are the concept art for each of the party members you will be controlling. I'm posting them here instead of on the images page because these are just CONCEPT images. They still require some tweaking before I'll call them done. Alright, here we go:

It's finally here! The feedback/results for last year's Halloween event, in podcast form. Sit back and listen to three people from the UK (and, ironically, one New Englander) banter about spooky games and nonsense!
Nature's Uplifting Revenge
What if you could separate the activity of science from the human researchers who conduct it? Automate it, in fact? Imagine creating a bot that does physics experiments and builds an internal model of the world based on those experiments. This is what I call 'Thalience'.

Aether Pulse, as a game, has always had only a barest of plots half-formed in my head. During the 2-Day Do Something challenge, I aimed to remedy that.
A Charming First Episode That Leaves You Wanting More...
Homework Salesman is a strangely named game given that it doesn't have anything to do with homework and salesmen, so hopefully no one has let the confusing name put them off. Notably, this game comes from the same people who brought us last year's Misao Star Stealing Prince and, just like that project, what you get here is a game that takes basic JRPG stock and crams it full of interesting mechanics, charming visuals and ridiculously cute characters.

Equipment Upgrades
Most RPGs give the player increasingly powerful equipment as they go on. This serves two main purposes: it gives the player an immediate concrete goal for power they need to obtain - "get this upgrade" instead of "get as many experience points as you can until you get bored of grinding experience points" - and it gives the player a method by which they can temporarily choose the direction to grow in. They can buy equipment for one character instead of another, or defensive gear instead of agility-boosting gear, giving them a level of control over their party.

Gaming Advice With Professor Know-It-All

Congratulations, good man. By directing your time and efforts from working on the next killer app for an old engine that nobody has used since 1997, you've just made someone's day and given yourself a couple of points in overall community service! Now don't you feel all warm and accomplished inside?
Is RMN faster now?
You might have noticed that the site was down for a few hours. Long story short I broke RMN when uploading changes to PROD by ankylo came and fixed my mess. Is the site faster now? Also, the frontpage was updated.
For God so loved the world...
"...that he gave his only son, that whosoever should believe in him would not perish, but have eternal life."
(John 3: 16)

Writing a playable religious game, especially one based on Christianity, is tough. In fact, I'll go out on a limb and say that writing about being a serial killer, a mecha pilot, or a dragon-slaying RPG hero is very, very easy compared to pulling off a game that deals with any particular world religion. How do you write a game and not a tract? Where do you draw the line between gameplay and evangelization? What liberties should you take (or not take) with the source text?

DynModeSeven
Allows you to render your maps in a SNES mode 7 similar fashion

This Plugin can load your maps, and allow you to render them in a fashion similar to that of the background mode 7 of the Super Nintendo. It adds perspective scaling to a single flat image, which gives a pseudo 3D feeling to the map. The video offers a reference as to what can be done with this plugin.
How Does The Fox Play..?
Fey is an ABS-based game that tells the story of Landon, who I think is searching for an artefact called the fire stone in order to save a relative; the truth is that I actually don't have a clue what the motive behind their quest is because the storytelling is incredibly fragmented. The background to the story is told through a series of flashbacks that unravel themselves as the quest progresses, the problem being that the gaps between each flash-back are too large for anything to really stick.

Diedrupo and Ronove have crafted an endearing life simulation game with dungeon exploration, quests, crafting new equipment and items, and befriending the people in town.

Jude and Brickroad are creating a unique hero party simulation where you manage heroes, organize them into parties, and dispatch them on various adventures across the world.
Surprisingly Entertaining.
Baby Christ RPG Review
The game had your standard play structure, walk around and do stuff, and then fight. There wasn't anything special to comment about the game play, other than it was a little rough when moving from one story or chapter to another. For example, when I changed chapters in the 3rd story, I would lose my items. Otherwise game play was pretty solid. I didn't feel lost, even with all of the chapters and the game being split up into 3 sections.
