RPG Maker VX Ace Lite Cook Off!

Started playing Subterranian Starfield.

Huh. Reminds me of Etrian Odyssey. Freakin' love that series, even though it takes me a year per game. XD The little pictures that pop up when you enter each new screen is a really nifty effect. I like.

Of course, I hopped onto Sadist mode, thinking "Can't be THAT much harder than my game...can it?".

:P I expect I'll be regretting that decision eventually. So far, though, it's not that bad. *expects that the developer is laughing, waiting for my sweet tears of frustration.*

You know, after seeing you fight that thing, I think I can see why you had such a hard time...

I think I'm going to put an NPC or something somewhere to give a hint. Because I guess the magic bullet for this fight that makes things a lot easier isn't as obvious as I thought it was. >_> Yeah, I'll put a hint.

Oh by the way, just so you know, if you've gotten the main plant trying to do the revival song, you've just tipped the scales and victory is in reach. Lock it down, and the win is yours.

Actually, I'm fighting the guy right now and my gosh...0_o Either I somehow unbalanced things recently with my fixes and stuff and didn't realize it, or I wasn't fighting the guy properly before. I'm absolutely murdering the !@#$er at level 5. Yeah, yeah, I have the best armor you can buy, but still...I think it's TOO easy for hard mode now...

I'll need someone else to test my new balancing before the next update... >_>
Maybe I'm just too close to the project now...

Edit: Yeah, something's not right. I didn't even need a single item. No one hit critical HP even once. I pretty much got by with defensive orders and the occasional medicinal herbs to cure poison... 0_o I need another tester to make sure it's not just me knowing my own game so well that I can utterly wreck it.

I mean, seriously, I added all these cool new buff items and stuff, and I haven't even thought of touching them yet...XD

RPG Maker VX Ace Lite Cook Off!

I was under the impression that I wasn't allowed to make any updates once the judging started. I'm sitting on a huge load of fixes, waiting until it's legal to make a full update again.

Oh and I replaced the main combat music. Found something much better.

Oh GODS. This is a huge wall. My apologies for any eye damage you get because of this wall of text. XD

IoL, though I'm afraid I kinda rage-quit that one after the plant boss... well, I'm going to have to nerf that one.

Yeah, I don't blame you. I was kinda expecting that to happen. Unless you're able to figure out the boss' gimmick really quick and start pushing hard from the get go, it's insane.

Until recently I hated this guy most of all, matter of fact.

For the record, I really feel bad about having to nerf some of these games to get past the bosses and beat them. It feels really bad to have to do so and I wince every time I do it, because I know that it's terrible, but for an LJ I can't justify either cutting out whole battles (because there might be lessons in there somewhere), nor having 12 episodes of me trying to get lucky enough to get past a boss. Which is why I edited only superficial things like percentage of hits and the stats a little more evenly.

Hey, I don't mind anymore. I mean, you need to get though the game to judge it, right? You have my Royal Permission to haxx the game as much as you need to to get to the end, alright?

Even using skills and abusing them I seem to be getting slaughtered and I really think that even on easy mode the bosses would be too hard. Especially one that is made up of three plants that all damage, protect each other, stun, deal huge damage, poison, revives the one that's killed, ups defence, heals all the damage you do in one turn and deals full-party attacks.

It's just too much all at once, especially when you're stuck with just 6 attacks each character and some don't do any damage. I mean, what good is the one that lowers enemy evasion? And if you get constantly stunned so that you die before you can use Wilders' special combo...

Yeah, maybe I hit the player with too much at once there with little warm up. There ARE ways of dealing with every single thing he does to the point where you can take him out with all level 2 with starting gear only needing to revive one person...But there just isn't that much leeway if you goof something up.

It doesn't help that VX Ace's battle text scrolls by REALLY fast, and enemies don't do their little pre-attack animations from XP anymore (which would have been useful for showing when a skill counts as magic/mouth usage), so some important stuff can be easily missed. I've since gone back and made the Cover thing a LOT more explicit, though. I've gotten a LOT of complaints about it already. x_x

Depending on how much time and remaining resources I have, I'm also planning on adding optional bosses that will more slowly introduce stuff to the player so they aren't massacred by Singing Green and his giant wall of gimmicks.

Oh and the skill that lowers evasion is there just to do a little something more than a normal attack (basic skills are usually better than normal attacks). It's not always useful, but I tend to prefer it over obfuscate. Enemies when I play have this odd tendency to evade my attacks anytime I REALLY need them to hit. >_>

Yeah, there's just a little bit too much and no leeway for doing the wrong attack or just plain bad luck. You can say I'm bitching but I guess I expect a little more lenience in accidentally doing something wrong. Even on hard mode. Oh god, Rhyme's game is gonna slaughter me, isn't it? >.<;

As I said, you're judging, you have limited time and videos, etc. So I don't mind the hacking now that I realize you have good reason to.

And yeah, I don't know if you're the intended audience for that difficulty at all. It's more intended for people who REALLY want a challenge and find most RPGs to be too easy. I have a few friends like that, and they enjoyed the game, minus a few problems that I'm rectifying (or have already).

That said, I'm planning on renaming and re-balancing the other difficulties to make them more JRPG and less Puzzles-of-death. Not everyone is looking for that level of hard.

I don't remember being told I could regen it in DD or IoL, but I might have been distracted at the time (or accidentally pressed the button). Perhaps highlighting it if it were mentioned would be a neat idea, so it stands out in text? (There's a lot of information text in DD)

I mentioned it VERY briefly. I'm not surprised you missed it. It also doesn't help that by default, VXAce only displays TP cost or MP cost, and not both if the skill uses both. Once I have the full version, that's the first script I'm putting in, right form the get-go. There's no excuse for that not being in the default engine.

Also, I was playing Illusions of Loyalty earlier today just for fun and giggles and OMG I got a Spellblade sword or something! I could have swore this game didn't have any item drops. Or at least I never got anything cool that I would have noticed. And now that I have already beaten the game, I get a better sword than the one I had before... Such is my luck. xP

Yeah...I basically threw a few dropped items in at the last dungeon at the last second. I think I left the drop rate a little too low for them, even if the new sword IS pretty damn good.

I've since gone back and given everyone proper drops now.

Yeah, after some more serious experimentation, I'm really thinking I need to totally remake how Wilder works in my game.

Most characters do about 40-70 to the brigands, depending on the skill. With Call of the Wild and precision slice, Wilder can do up to 210 with one hit.

Despite the random nature of the criticals, This kinda does turn him into a one trick pony who does all your damage via that one combo.

Now the question is, what do I replace it with? ...Bah.

EDIT: Oh. I just had a brilliant idea that'll let me keep the combo, but make it less of a game killer, while also making it more reliable. :D Sweet.

I have a ten video limit, remember, so unless I feel I'm close to the end I'll probably end at the ten mark, despite whether I enjoyed a game or not.

Oh right, you have a limit...

:) Well, if you're really wanting more of the story and you have a strict limit, then nerf your way though all you want. I really hope you get to the end and enjoy it.

I did realise about certain combos but I don't like being stuck using the same moves over and over and over. It's boring, so I experiment. Yes, I already knew about that High-crit/Attack combo but filler battles shouldn't take so long even with said skills (and remember I did use it at the start but it really didn't do much for me, especially when you consider that Criticals are random and some people just don't have the lucky touch.)

In the case of random certain (it's what I call it) it's hard to balance since it is random. It would have been a better idea to use a sure certain instead, but then again, my opinion.

Yeah, I do think that making Wilder based on criticals was a mistake. Not because it's based on chance (with call of the wild, more than half my attacks tend to be criticals.). Rather it's because criticals are so powerful that when mixed with the chance factor, it makes things weird in terms of balance. I'm not sure what I can do to fix that without a total remake, though...And the criticals serve the important purpose of being one of the ways to bypass high defense...I'll look into it when I rebalance the game around non-random encounters after I install the full version of RMVX.

I'd also like to point out that I WILL NOT use meta information. I rarely use guides of any kind when I play any game and I won't be using yours, so if I stumble through boss fights blindly it's because you haven't given me the information I need in game, where it should be. NPCs or books or character conversations or cutscenes or any number of things can be used to impart this information but just having a file outside the game does not equate information given. Sorry, but it just doesn't count.

:) Good.

You're supposed to struggle through the bosses, learning their "tells" and experimenting until you find the most efficient way to turn the battle in your favor. The FAQ is there for people who don't have the patience to figure out the bosses on their own.

I don't have NPCs or books talking about how to beat the bosses because there are so few of them, and once you know how the bosses work, they can be trivialized... The next game I'm planning, which is gonna be based on hunting down bosses, will have that, just by virtue of there being more, so spoiling a few solutions here and there won't be so bad.

it's just a little annoying that it's become a roadblock for me when I want to see the rest of the story and how it pans out. If I nerf it a little it's because I'm anxious to see the next part... which is a good thing in this case. ^.^

:D Well, then have at it. Hit them with your nerf gun if you need to, as much as you want. I want you to be able to make it to the end of the game. Stuff becomes amazing at that point. ^^

(Also, I have it on good authority that my mind will either be broken or be able to claim unbreakable status by the end of this judging since I still have Rhyme's game to go. Which I am keeping for last... because I agreed to play it on the Insane setting.

I must be a masochist. orz )

Oh dear...

A day's silence might mean that maybe it worked and she's loving your game =P

Or maybe it means I drove her to insanity and she's now in the mental hospital going "stoptheherpaderpmusicstoptheherpaderpmusicstoptheherpaderpmusicstoptheherpaderpmusicOHGODNOTTHESPIDERBOSS".

Haha! Liberty, you're such a n00b! ...Having to nerf battles in order to beat them. Tsk tsk tsk! %P

:s It's mostly that Liberty isn't using the skills very efficiently at all. If she did, she wouldn't be having anywhere near that amount of difficulty. You can't brute force my game. Not on (Standard) anyway.

I mean, I've seen her use Call of the Wild -> Precision slice ONCE. That's the simplest damage dealing combo in the game and really strong for how simple it is...

>_> I can't imagine how she's gonna react to the final boss. I'm honestly worried she'll give up once she hits it, if the forest boss doesn't do it first.

Then again, watching her play made me realize I need to be more clear at the start of the game that you CANNOT play the game on (Standard) like a regular JRPG...I think I'll need to go and rename my difficulty modes and make the easiest difficulty play more like a regular JRPG (and remove a lot of the boss gimmicks).

Here, replace map005 with that, and go onto the world map.

That should fix the music.

EDIT:
If you want to import your own music and set that in the editor, go to the world map, square (40, 37) and on the first page of that event, add in a "change battle music" line.
