Mafia Guide; Hosting, Suggestions, and Discussion

Having recently died, I have time to make the post to organize mafia a little better. RMN, or Real Mafia Network, plays games of mafia very consistently. This thread is purposed to consolidate the reused parts of games (rules) and to plan new games.

Standard Mafia Rules (Pasted from the mafiascum wiki):
In its simplest form, Mafia consists of two sides: the Mafia, and the Town. The Mafia's goal is to kill the innocents, while the Town's goal is to kill the Mafia.
At the beginning of the game, the Moderator will secretly send everyone their role. The Mafia will know each other, while (in the basic game) everyone else will only know their own role.
The game has two phases, the first of which is Day. During Day, the Town must choose someone to Lynch; they are trying to eliminate the Mafia, but the Mafia can lead them astray by casting suspicion elsewhere. Generally, players will vote for someone they think is Mafia (the Mafia will vote so that they seem to be doing this as well, and might even vote for each other to confuse the Town); when a player gets a majority of the votes, they are lynched. Their role is revealed by the Moderator, and it becomes Night.
During the Night, the thread is locked and no one can talk publicly. The Mafia, however, can speak to each other privately to plot strategy and decide who to murder before the next Day begins. In this way, they can silence members of the Town who are threats to them. At the end of the Night, the murder is carried out and another Day begins. In effect, the Town gets to kill someone, and then the Mafia gets to kill someone.
The game alternates between Day and Night until either the Mafia are eliminated, or the Mafia have killed everyone else (or nothing can prevent the same).

Common in RMN Games:
-Mafia have a permanent private chat.
-Hammering
-Plurality lynches
-Town plays awfully

Mafia Glossary:
Scum - a member of the mafia
Townie/Villager - a member of the town, sometimes used to refer to only vanilla town
Vanilla - a player without a special ability; vanilla town and vanilla mafia are both useable
Lylo - short for "Lynch or Lose", the moment at the end of the game where town must lynch mafia or guarantee a loss.
Hammer/Hammering - instantly lynching a person and ending the day by getting a majority of votes on them.
Plurality lynching - a system of lynching where at the end of the day phase the target with the most votes is lynched, regardless of how many votes that person has. Commonly used with hammering.
Majority lynching - a system of lynching where at the end of the day the person with the majority of the votes is lynched. If no one has a majority, no lynch takes place. Usually doesn't use hammering.

Previous Game: Liberty's Anime Waifu Battle Royale

Current Game: Kloe's Klodoka Magicka Mafia

Upcoming Games (In order):
Zeuzio's Mafia
PianoTM's Spy vs. Spy Mafia 2
Frogge's Mafia

Hosting Tips:
Design
author=Blobofgoo
Create mechanics that interact with eachother, but also consider how each role will function if another dies. Especially consider day 1 deaths.
author=Blobofgoo
Be careful creating swingy mechanics. Will a single action cause one side to have a large advantage/disadvantage? (For example, a vigilante sword in the hands of the mafia)

Running the game
author=Blobofgoo
Know what information you will reveal and to who for all actions in the game.
author=Blobofgoo
Don't change any of your rules during the game. It may seem like a good idea at the time, but it will cause incorrect reasoning later in the game.

Things to discuss here:

-If you would like to host
-Tips for hosting (They will be added to this post)
-Discussing mechanical ideas for new games or the effectiveness of mechanics in past games. What mechanics would you like to see again?
-Settings you would like to see?

[Poll] Which type of Mafia do you prefer?

We have had a lot of varied games lately. Vanilla mafia has sort of fallen by the wayside. I'd like some feedback on what type of mafia you guys like.

This poll is based on frequency of the games.

This does not include flavor, only mechanics.

For example, if you prefer custom setups, but still like vanilla once in awhile you would select "Both, skewed towards custom."

Ultima Fantasy Mafia - GAME ON! [Postgame]

Roles:
Town
Seer - Standard investigative role. Investigating someone will also tell what items they are holding at the end of the night. Stolen Items will not be detected.
White Mage - Standard doctor role. May not save the same person on consecutive turns.
Amateur Blacksmith - Creates shoddy shields and gives them to players. May also create a Vigilante's Sword if the existing one is destroyed. Blacksmith may give the same person a shield on consecutive turns. However, if they are holding a shield, the shield will be returned to the blacksmith. (Affectively nullifying the blacksmith's action)

Mafia
Assassin - 1 time mafia nightkill that does not reveal the role of the dead person and goes through all protection. Assassin must be alive for mafia to use this ability. This kill replaces the regular mafia nightkill.
Thief - Attempts to steal an item each night. If he/she succeeds, the item is destroyed. If the vigilante sword is destroyed, the blacksmith may forge another. If the it is destroyed again, he may forge another, etc.
Black mage - Casts debilitating spells on town: 2 casts of slow, which delays a target's action by one day, and 1 casts of deceit, which makes a player flip as a role specified by the black mage when that player dies.

Items
Vigilante's sword - Person holding the sword may make a kill and then give the sword to someone else. If the sword is given to a mafia player, the mafia may use the sword kill in addition to their regular kill, but the sword will be randomly dispersed to town instead of traded regularly at the beginning of the next day. If the sword is destroyed, a public message will be posted in the thread.
Shoddy Shield - If a non assassination kill is attempted on a player with a shoddy shield, that player becomes wounded and will die at the end of the next day instead of immediately. If a shield is destroyed a public message will NOT be posted in the thread.

All night actions happen simultaneously. All actions will occur regardless of deaths.
-Exception: Thief. If the thief targets the person holding the sword, the sword's actions (vigilante kill and trade) are canceled. A thief stealing a shield does not prevent someone's shield protection for that night. Therefore it's generally advantageous to target someone other than the mafia kill target each night.

Note: If a role dies before there turn in the queue they will still be able to use their ability. Deaths do not have any affect until the day phase.
Note 2: Wounded players cannot be lynched.

Players:
1. Kloe, the Haiku Prodigee - Thief
2. OddRabbit - Villager
3. Ratty McLeod, the self proclaimed "immortal" - Black Mage
4. Cap_H - Amateur Blacksmith
5. Gourd_Clae - Villager
6. LockeZ - Seer - White Mage
7. InfectionFiles - Villager
8. TungermanU - Villager
9. XoeisCool - Villager
10.Psy_Wombats, the Shepard - Assassin
11.Yellow Magic - Villager
12.TangledLion - Villager
13. Cave_Dog - UNKNOWN - Seer

Generals Rules - partially quoted from TangledLion
1. Do not share any PMs from the Gamemaster.- You Can tell People what I have said, But No copy-pasting PMs.

2. The game is divided into day phases of 48 hours and night phases of 24 hours. - The Day Phase can be Cut Short if players leave enough lynchvotes so that it is an unbreakable majority. Also Day Phases Will Start Early If all Night Actions Are Completed Early.

3. No talking to other players outside of Mafia on RMN, and NO PMING! You can PM me, but that's it. While I May not know about it, woe be to Anyone breaking this rule if I find out!

4. Each day, players discuss who is most likely to be mafia and vote for one person to be voted off of the game. Voting follows standard rules. Votes are to be presented in the thread, using the following format: #Lynch TangledLion. If you for any reason you change your mind, use the following tag: #Cancel, or simply cast a lynchvote for someone else. Nolynch votes are not permitted and will be ignored. Anyone choosing Nolynch votes for him or herself. Vote is majority. If there is a tie, I will cast the tie-breaking vote By kicking off whoever annoys me more using a dice roll.

5. You must post Every Day Phase. You GOTTA stay Active in the game, else We might all be waiting on you...(Note; If I see you doing noting but posting worthless things like "Posting here to avoid modkill" Too often, I WILL Count it as violation of this rule)

6. No editing posts. Only the moderator may edit his posts, you made a Spelling mistake? Double Posting is OK in mafia games, so just correct it in a second post!

7. No dead posting. Since The Consequence of Breaking the rules is a death in-game I'll kill you in your sleep IRL It might give a reputation as "That one who breaks the rules" in future mafia games, and you wouldn't want that would you? Besides, when you die I'll link you to a private dead-chat, as well as mafia chat to spectate the game!

8.PM all game related questions directly to the GameMaster. Do not post these questions in the thread as it can easily give away your alignment.

Failure to comply with any rules that can be broken will result in a Modkill In the most ridiculously entertaining way possible

Rule changes:
-Seer no longer detects stolen items
-Blacksmith can give the same person a shield on consecutive turns, but if they are holding a shield, it will be returned. (Nullifies the action)
-Players will know if they receive a shield, but will not know if it gets destroyed by the thief.
-Simplified night order. (Only thief is conditional, all others are simultaneous)

I would also like people to confirm that they are still around to play as It has been quite a bit since sign ups actually took place. And if you would like to give yourself a fantasy occupation for flavor purposes (please) go right ahead.

If you have any final questions, ask away!

Ultima Fantasy Mafia - Moved Threads - Sign Ups Closed

Roles:
Town
Seer - Standard investigative role. Investigating someone will also tell what items they are holding at the end of the night. (stolen items of the thief will be detected on them the night they are stolen, but will then be dispersed the next day.)
White Mage - Standard doctor role. May not save the same person on consecutive turns.
Amateur Blacksmith - Creates shoddy shields and gives them to players. May also create a Vigilante's Sword if the existing one is destroyed.

Mafia
Assassin - 1 time mafia nightkill that does not reveal the role of the dead person and goes through all protection. Assassin must be alive for mafia to use this ability.
Thief - Attempts to steal an item each night. If he/she succeeds, the item does not work that night and the item gets dispersed to town the following day. is destroyed.
Black mage - Attempts to destroy items with destructive magic. Cannot target thief. Casts debilitating spells on town: 2 casts of slow, which delays a target's action by one day, and 1 casts of deceit, which makes a player flip as a role specified by the black mage when that player dies.

Items
Vigilante's sword - Person holding the sword may make a kill and then give the sword to someone else. If the sword is given to a mafia player, the mafia may use the sword kill in addition to their regular kill, but the sword will be randomly dispersed to town instead of traded regularly during the day.
Shoddy Shield - If a non assassination kill is attempted on a player with a shoddy shield, that player becomes wounded and will die at the end of the next day instead of immediately.

Night order:
-Blacksmith makes a shield (or sword) and gives it to someone
-The person holding the sword makes a kill, mafia makes a kill, white mage attempts to save someone
-Thief attempts to steal, Black mage attmepts to destroy
-Sword is traded to another player
-Seer investigates someone

Note: If a role dies before there turn in the queue they will still be able to use their ability. Deaths do not have any affect until the day phase.
Note 2: Wounded players cannot be lynched.

The item mechanic should make deception a large tactic for both town and mafia. Although town needs to work together, they can not reveal who has the item due to thief and black mage.

I'd like to get feedback on what you think might be unbalanced one way or the other before starting the game. Currently I'm considering removing the thief or black mage. A lot of this is subject to change as I'm sure there are scenarios I haven't thought about.

Players:
1. Kloe, the Haiku Prodigee
2. Pianotm
3. Ratty
4. Cap_H
5. Gourd_clae
6. LockeZ
7. InfectionFiles
8. TungermanU
9. Cap_H

Ceiling Passability Error [RMVX ACE]

My character is able to walk from ground tiles to ceiling tiles as shown in this pic:

Is there anyway to fix this?

Derivative Works in Game Making

I like using custom assets. A lot of times assets (especially musical) are attached to a creative commons license. My project will be noncommercial, and I have no problem giving credit to the author creator, but the 3rd qualification, derivative works, is limiting my options.

Question is: Does using a track in a game make that game a derivative work of the music? Does this count as fair use?

Tried researching it and got mixed results. Has anyone else ran into derivative works issues before?

How do I fix "STREAM WRITE ERROR" RM2K3

I'm not sure what happened, but whenever I try to save it says stream write error and doesn't allow me to. This is RM2K3. WHAT DO I DO?!

Need artist to draw very retro graphics (DW Styled)

I need someone that can draw more characters like these. I like the style. I'll PM details to anyone interested. I don't think it should be too hard, but it's still beyond my artistic ability. Thank you.

Did RMN get new ads?

Starting today, I have started seeing random ads linked to text. It's really annoying. I hope this is only temporary. It shows up everywhere (it's even in some of the headers) and is unprofessional. It also makes my browser cluttered. I'd like to see them removed if there not necessary. Do we have any alternatives or anything?

Discussing Original Classes

Classes have kind of become willy nilly now. Basically anything can be considered a class as long as the name and stats are a tad different. That's not what I want. I want classes that are unique and interesting. This is probably confusing some so heres a list of what I think are meaningful classes.

Healer - Has mainly healing spells and supportive spells instead of offense, which making different than the majority of classes
Mage - The only class that uses high power spells that are offensive
Soldier - Has offensive and defensive abilities and high attack and defense
Beserker - Extremely offensive while sacrificing HP and defense for high strength

There are definitely more, but on to phase 2. I want them to be interesting. If they aren't interesting, the player will feel forced to use them instead of wanting to use them. This can be done by simply adding a quirk to a basic class, but it's going to need to be thought out. Kind of like when LockeZ asked for the boss designs. When you make a class, make sure you explain why it workd or what it covers for, etc.

You need to answer the following. How it is formatted is up to you. This doubles as my example, although you guys will probably come up with better classes.

Name - Spartan (or Gladiator)
Strengths - The Spartan class has high attack and defense.
Weaknesses - The spartan class has lower HP then most physical classes. Armor piercing attacks will take them down easily.
Special - The Spartan Class's skills change depending on the weapon equipped. Equipping shields gives defensive abilities. Equipping gauntlets gives multihitting and status abilities. Spears give offensive abilities. Daggers give very offensive and "risky" abilities. Shields and gauntlets are equipped in the shield slot while Spears and daggers are equipped in the weapon slot. Equipping different combos of items will give you an edge on different enemies.

When thinking of weaknesses, it may help to think of it in a PvP setting. Good luck!
