Goaling It 2024

It's that time, another year is beginning and It's a great opportunity to set goals. So, go ahead and write down what you would like to achieve this year. You can follow my example or come up with your own way. You can focus solely on your gammak goals or your personals ones. I tend to combine them both, trying to be realistic.

The previous year brought some big changes to my life and my goals for this year reflect that. My overall goals might be more vague than ever. That's for multiple reasons. I'm trying to keep their number low, I'm trying to keep them achievable and things might change again. I will try to elaborate on my goals and what I have on my mind, tho. The most important goals are in bold letters and secondary ones are in italics.

My goals:
1. Finish Soma Union and write a review
2. Get in shape and climb more
3. Travel abroad
4. Start dating again

5. Gammak

The first goal is one I have from the previous year. I really want to finish that game and write it again. It's one of the more memorable RM games, there's a lot to take from its design and I guess it should be an easy goal to achieve.
The second is closely related to the second half of 2023. I was super committed to my job and I dismissed my physical health. I want to work on that. I usually feel better, have more energy and more self-esteem when actively doing a physical activity and right now I feel tired and sick all the time.
I'll almost certainly travel abroad this year. So, accomplishing the goal should be easy. I plan 3 or 4 journeys. The first one should be to Italy in February. In March I should spend two weekends abroad. One in Leipzig and one in Croatia. The last trip I plan is either to Indonesia or Africa. That one is the actual real goal here, but I wouldn't feel too bad if I failed it.
Next on, my personal life got sacrificed in last four months and I feel lonely sometimes. It's time to slap myself and instead of doing nothing start being active in seeking out romance.
And yes, the final goal is gammak. I want to talk about this a little bit more in detail. I haven't touched RM or any other proper engine in years and all my skills are forgotten, but rn I have time I can commit to this and I have projects I want to finish. The first one might be a short bitsy games, just to get something finished fast. After that It's time to finish Left Behind 2 and Burnt Ones. The first one shouldn't take too much time, but I want it to be a deeper, more polished experience than the original. Burnt Ones are a spicier project. I like the world I created for it and the backbone of its story. Other than that I'm starting from a scratch, I might even use a different game engine.
The last thing I would want to work on is a small metroidvania game, but I don't have any concrete plans for that one. Maybe I will fit in a jam game as well.

2023 Gaming Diary

I actually played some games in Q4.

November
I was sick and without internet. So, I fired up Crusader Kings 2 and played the grand strategy for two or three days straight. I played with a mod focused on early medieval Britain (Western Europe 410-962 - The Winter King) as a Welsh lord and I had a good time. The mod has a sponge mechanism, so after every death of a great king defeating many Saxons, they returned. I ran out of interesting things to do and stopped eventually.
I also finished one Heroes of Might and Magic 3 scenario. Unfortunately, I got bored, because I already played the campaign once or twice. I miss expansions in the HD edition and I also suspect that I'm not as big of a fan of the game as I used to be. I might find my family's copy of Heroes IV next year as I kind of want to return to that fiction.

December
I played more than one game. So, let's make a list:

1. Mr. Platformer is a lo-rez platformer/score rush? I didn't play more than five minutes of it. It seems solid for what it is, but I know what it is not. It's not my jam.

2. Green New Deal Simulator - It's a card driven resource management game. It's good and difficult and the theme is interesting.

3. A Worker's Guide to Espionage is a very short game from my favourite communist gammaker, which serves as a pamphlet on how to organize yourself at work, find allies and detect potential threads.

4. Handshakes - Now this is an interesting one. It's a puzzle game of snaking hands. Sometimes you have to have your hand cut off in order to keep it on a button. It's clever and stylish and I liked it and recommended it to my pupils and they probably found it too difficult..

5. Klifur is a game about bouldering. And I think it captured the hobby really well and turned it into a stylish game, which is one half puzzle and one part about your mouse control. It def is both clever and addicting. It looks great too. My pupils actually got really invested in this one.

6. Keyboard Twister is a twister you play with your fingers on your keyboard. It's hard. I lost about ten times in the single minute I spent playing this proof of a concept.

7. Katti is a minimalist puzzle game with lo-rez graphics about a cat and a jar of jam. Or something like that. The puzzles are all about shifting tiles and building paths and i spent an enjoyable hour with the little game.

8. Juurru created by the same team/person as Katti is another minimalist cute puzzle. This time it's less about figuring out puzzles and just making the game annoying. The core idea about being this being and growing roots of plants while moving underground is cool, but the actual puzzles are a little bit of drag. It's still a fine way to waste an hour.

9. Visit - In this piece of interactive art, you visit an exhibition. It's very minimalist, the whole thing is about 30 seconds long, but It captures the experience well.

10. Pissed-on Petite Pervert is a very short piece of interactive art. Your avatar always dies in this one. It's funny and it's making a point I guess.

11. Die in the Dungeon: Classic - I guess it's supposed to be a dice based version of Slay the Spire. You play as a frog adventurer venturing deep into a dungeon fighting mostly insects. You use dice placement to combo hits and defend yourself and upgrade your dice to best stronger and stronger foes. Also, It's roguelike. It's really fun concept and the first few battles are really fun, but it becomes repetitive quickly. I would appreciate more narrative beats and maybe some other locations or more varied rooms, so it's not all about defeating troupes of enemies. Still, I might return to it and try another run.

12. Nowhere Prophet - Finally a proper long game! Again it's a roguelike, this time twisting the FTL formula with its narrative beats, random events and travel nodes. But this time it's a deck builder and more importantly deck battler. Also, It's set in a post-apocalyptic Dune-like world.
It definitely has an interesting curve. Because it takes a while to hook you. The first few battles are fun, then they start to drag a little, then they become satisfying and fun again with new stronger cards and abilities. The setting also unfolds slowly and you can easily miss on many of its beats. You end up visiting interesting locations and doing interesting things in them, but the on map lore is mostly very basic without a proper character. Music is banging from the start to end, tho.
Tbh, I ended up having fonder memories of my single successful run than I expected myself to have. I almost considered making another one with new unlocked content.

13. Nykra
was supposed to be a paid game, but due to negative feedback, the developer decided to make it free. And it's a treat for that money. It looks game, the story is interesting and yes, it crashed on me eventually. I wrote a more elaborate review on Steam, so check it out or just try the game for yourself.

14. Convoy - I returned to this for the third or fourth time and bounced off again after losing twice in 20 minutes accomplishing nothing in the process. And that was on easy. Rage uninstalled it tbh.

Goaling It 2023

Wow, I actually managed to accomplish my two main goals! I live in a nice flat and I have a proper job.
I failed the rest of my goals. I might try to rush and finish Soma Union tomorrow, but...I'm not sure I'll manage.
I'm actually interested to see what my goal for the next year will. They might contain some actual gammak and I might have enough money to travel somewhere.

What are you thinking about right now?

So, should I get into miniature games? I've been watching a lot of videos and quite like that it's both about creating your army, painting it and than playing a game of tactics, but I also suspect I would spend a lot of money on plastics and rules and colors and just abandon it. I guess investing these money in something less nerdy might be a better choice.

Merry Christmas RMN

Merry Christmas!

(I might be a little bit late)

Summer Movie Wager

I feel betrayed by not getting a discord ping on this.

2023 Gaming Diary

I haven't updated this in a while, but that's mostly because I haven't played any video games.
All of my turn based games on BGA ended and I haven't played a real time game in a while.

What are you thinking about right now?

Government

Advance Wars Mafia (Game Over - Mafia Wins) [MAFIA]

I got little busy, but I should be able to set up something in roughly one week.

Advance Wars Mafia (Game Over - Mafia Wins) [MAFIA]

So..Would you be interested in another small game? This time with more powers? The theme would be another classic video game and this time I would also post some strategy tips for both alignments (one of them is clear. Using the thread to discuss and solve is a good way to win for townies).

Also, It looks like I will be representing RMN in the Mafia Championship (again). MU mods kinda forced me to join.
