Where did RPing go, and Why?

It's not entirely about "game-changing decisions", and I'm not talking about simulacra, either. The elements of roleplay extend past big decisions. It's about little niches of gameplay that allow you to express your character, and how other characters respond to that. RPing is awfully limited, where it is present - things like the morality system in Fable/Mass Effect, or the relationships of Dragon Age...

Like I said before, RPing means different things to different people. It means sim games and game-changers to you, and for me it's a little more subtle.

Where did RPing go, and Why?

I know I'm probably going to regret posting this, but I thought rpgs is when you have levels, stats, quests, items, exploration and a usually long story? At least thats the minimum of what every rpg I've ever played had in it.

*Gulp* I hope I don't get attacked.

Yes, there's that. But actual RPing - for me, anyway (different people have different ideass about it) - harks back to the pen 'n' paper days of old, where you had the option to fill a role and stick to it i.e. in Vampire: The Requiem, from the World of Darkness series, not only could you choose race, class, stats etc., but the course of the game depended partly, if not entirely, on your ability to stick to your character's personality and roles, instead of flitting to the best course of action.

I guess the essential thing is, instead of being given a set role (like, say, playing as Cloud or Lightning in FF), you'd choose your role and act it out. In the case of sandbox RPG's, like Fallout, Oblivion, and Fable, you're rarely given the chance to do something like this. The quests give you one course of action, and whilst there's limited choice in choosing what quests you take, ultimately if you don't, you lose out.

An Expanding Project...

Wish I could help, but the position I want to help with is already taken.

Which position is that?

An Expanding Project...

Sounds like a plan. Lesse... We have a spriter, but she's also our concept artist, so I may ask her about changing focus.

The roles we definitely need are as follows:
Battler Artist (Monster Design for Side-On Melody Battles)
Area Designer (Mapper)
Spriter

As for workload, it's pretty intensive on all sides. We'll need several large maps as well as smaller self-contained maps for houses, guilds etc. Spriters would be tasked with designing 4-direction walking sprites for generic NPC's, player characters, Friends, and sundry other things. They'll also have to design battler sprites for the Player Characters and Friends.

An Expanding Project...

Thank you for moving it! Now we can get down to business.

An Expanding Project...

Aw, hell. I cannot believe I posted this in the wrong forum... *headdesk*

Could one of the mods move this to Help & Requests, please?

An Expanding Project...

As you're probably unaware/maybe aware, nukei and I are creating a freeform RPG, titled Journey. We've reached a stage in our workload where we've decided that it would be greatly beneficial to the quality of the game if we bring more people in.

Right now, Project Journey consists of the following members/roles:

Chaosbahamut123 (myself): Game Writer/Designer
nukei: Programmer/Designer
Dando (no RMN account): Concept Artist/Spriter
EmoChu (no RMN account): Soundtrack Artist

So we're looking at bringing in more people with skills outside of the expertise we already have. If you want to join us, please message me or email me at Green_Mach@hotmail with a brief summary of what you can bring to the team, as well as a showcase of your work, if possible. This showcase will be shared with the group, so they know who we're bringing in.

Right now, we're really partial to bringing an area designer in, as well as roles like that. If you're an area designer, a mapper, spriter, or animator, please get in touch - we'd love to have you on board.

I hope to hear from you soon!
Chaosbahamut123.

Some information concerning the game:
Engine: RPGMaker VX/Melody
Genre: Adventure/Fantasy

Journey is an open-world Fantasy RPG, in which the player interacts with the environment in a real and visceral way. Even the smallest decisions they make can have grand consequences, ranging from shaping lives to determining the fate of a town or city. Over the course of their experience, they will meet numerous NPC's labelled 'Friends', that can be recruited into the party.
The game features several traditional but expanded systems, such as Morality and Affection. In the case of the former, the player's actions will not determine whether they are 'good' or 'evil', but instead value that action based on the seven cardinal virtues and vices. Furthermore, each Friend will have their own values that influence how much they like the player, as well as interactions with other party members.
Journey also features a Quest system, split into several categories. For example, the Guilds that the player is a member of will provide several short 'Expeditions', that range from simple hunting quests to more deep and challenging events that require the player to do things other than gather X items or kill X monsters. Friends provide their own special Expeditions based on their own Affection, and they - as well as the player - can embark on their own, personal, continent-spanning Journey.

Lets Talk 3dMAX

lost interest? how was it limiting like you can only make animations?
I think its been like 4 almost 5 years since I got rpg maker 2k3 then X.P e.t.c but I still have alot of interest in a simple program like this ( simple compared to the big boys like Vlave, Maya e.t.c ).
I got it because I plan on doing an animation course in university and game design ( the arts like character design, modeling all, animations, rendering all of it since I'm average at maths, programing e.t.c but more naturally good at arts )

It seems like 3dMax is unpopular, is it that hard to get good with?

I lost interest because it's not the field of game design I generally enjoy working in. I prefer doing the writing in a game, not the animation.

Lets Talk 3dMAX

I used 3dsMAX for my Animation course in high school. I agree with the other guys - the learning curve is steep. But once you get into it and learn the little facets, you can make some top quality work.
I remember making a trailer for Silent Hill for my final production, and that was about 3 years ago. Haven't done anything with the program since, 'cuz I've just lost interest.
