Congrats on the featured game! This game totally deserves it.

I played the game, and it wasn't too bad. I definitely like yer sense of humor, fellow Oregonian.

Darn those late asset contributors! By the time you finish receiving all lines and art, you'll be asking for Act II stuff!

That scrolling message banner, was a experiment, it seemed good on paper. I agree with you it can be quite awkward, especially when your trying to read a treasure chest. I don’t know what I’ll do with that yet.

Yeah, the scrolling is a new idea, but new ideas aren't necessarily always good. I do have an idea on how to fix it. Instead of scrolling, try using different text transitional methods. You could have the text at the top be slowly revealed -- like if someone was writing the text down on paper. Then when the whole message is written/revealed, you wait for a few seconds and then start the next line of message the same exact way. This way it's much easier to read the text and it keeps the same uniqueness the old transition had.

I personally didn't think the story-heavy latter part of the game was a detriment to the game. By the time somebody reaches that part of the game, a player has sunk a sizable chunk of time with these characters. Thanks to the good writing, the characters were meaningful enough for me to be really emotionally involved with them. I wanted to know their backgrounds by that point in the story. That's just my two cents.

But yeah, all in all, good review. =]
