DEEP SOULS Review

Wow! That was a much higher rating than I expected for such a buggy demo!

First of all, thank you so much for taking the time to review this (especially with all the screenshots and captions and everything. Awesome! Secondly, you'll be happy to know that I am still working on the project, although due to my inability to work on projects for long periods of time before I start going crazy, it has been on the sidelines for a while.

Seriously, I'm working on about eight different games right now.

Needless to say, it's still in development, and I've been trying to iron out all the bugs:
- How stupidly easy it is playing as a Thief
- Impossibly high encounter rates
- Overpowered enemies, underpowered classes
- Getting past Lvl. 5-7 and becoming unstoppable
- And more!

That, and I've been trying to incorporate more lore into the game, but in a clever and masterful way, like in Dark Souls. Also, as for the "single party member" bit, I thought about adding in more characters, but as the game is designed for a solo run, I just don't think it would work - unless I took another page from the Dark Souls playbook and made "summonable" characters, like some of the NPCs you encounter in the dungeons.

Anyway, I can say that much love went into the making of this game, and it is sloppily put together in some parts, but that's half of its charm (unless I fix the issues, of course). I am very pleased with your review, and thanks again!

Awesome review! No complaints here.

Phillip & Floo is definitely the hardest team to use in that last area. With Floo, it helps to have his best equipment (the lightning gloves you get at the end of his sidequest with Bark in Firam). Paul's soldiers are weakest to lightning attacks I think, so that would have done wonders. It also helps to have his third Wind spell. With Phillip, you can pick up the lightning crystal/energem at the end of his sidequest in the Borland Tunnels. Another big resource that might have been overlooked are scrolls. Since they attack all enemies, you could have spammed lightning scrolls.

Oh... that was the other issue - I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think Phillip or Floo had a scanning ability. Maybe they did and I just didn't see it, but I don't recall ever knowing the guards' weaknesses.

With regards to the story (spoilers obv):
I wanted to take the irony route and pair up Athesis & Miles because it's gonna create that conflict between both of them and Sparrow. By that point, it's obvious that Athesis feels differently about Sparrow than he does of her. She doesn't want to settle down and almost treats the people in her life as a convenience. Sparrow was used, and that's a major part of his character's progression, and will be central for a lot of things in Part 2!

You mentioned not liking some of the music. Out of curiosity, which areas? Music is always tough to get right, so I'd like to see if I agree with any of them.

I see... well that kinda eases my mind a little bit with the story. As for the music, I can't quite remember all of the other songs I had opinions on, my save was at the end of chapter one. Oh yeah, I just noticed a bug with the stats at the end - it only records battles that you've lost, and been able to continue on afterwards. I apparently lost 1 battle (with the zombies in the Mines of Insanity during Sparrow's memory), but I was able to keep playing afterwards.

Gameplay is another tough area. I like random battles though, so they'll be staying, haha. I've tried to keep the encounter rates low in larger areas. There's actually a path along the center of the Blue Marshes that takes you right down to Duke, where you might get 1 or 2 battles each trip. I admit, it was a little cruel to make the player go through it every time, but eh. I needed some way to break up the story when you got to Hiram.

Ah, I found that area during my 3rd or 4th run through the area!

I'll see what I can do about finding that music, but Resource Hacker and loading my last save doesn't seem to be helping.
