for me, it would be to have the level design and graphical editing chops to really bring Fort Adder to life in W&R. i'm pretty happy with the game on the whole, especially as something put together in a manic rage, and have a lot of ideas for a sequel continuing Delilah's story, but level design is my biggest pitfall. if i had my way, the game world would be just a complete mindfuck of a giant level (yet still somehow cohesive and sensible)

Demon's Gate: Replace the entire class change system. It's responsible for the hilarious power creep when you can gain 30+ levels in 3 minutes. Really there's no real way to do it properly in 2k/3 the way I was trying it so it'd have to be replaced with something else entirely. Maybe some kind of point you get per level up and you can spend them on class skills or stat bonuses that you've unlocked, but doing that in 2k/3 is uuuuuuuuuuuugh too. Regardless it'd need a general stat and level crunch.

Altima: The thing I already did because holy fuck what was I thinking with that first release. I never thought out the mechanics too well so it ended up with a lot of various shaped enemies that you hit with various shaped skills. Also let it die.

RMN Bros 1: Still the hub world. There's still things I like about it but its role is, uh, not good! Instead spend that effort on some kind of final level in some capacity because just two Bowsers is lame.

RMN Bros 2: Removed all meta references, keep it just Mario & Pals. Ugh.

Moon Base Mario: Made more levels for it, although Soli and Kentona picked up a lot of that slack so probably nothing? Don't want to make some worlds even longer.

Letter From Hell: Mostly better pace when I was working on it, I saved too much for the end and had to do a ton of stuff to finish it on the last day. Really if it wasn't a co-op game I would've just bailed on it instead but I wasn't going to leave luishuu hanging.

I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

If I could do Flower Bubble Game!!! over I would use all original resources so I could sell it on Steam. I might actually do this one day, but at this point I'd start over in an engine that can export to mobile, because it'd make a much better mobile game than PC game.

If I could do Born Under the Rain over I would just convince my partners to sell it on Steam instead of releasing it for free. We made it for the first McBacon Jam and didn't really realize it was good enough to sell until after we'd released it for free.

I mean, Cave Story used to be freeware, and is still available as such. Hell, you could probably just add achievements/cards to it and nothing else and sell it.

I mean, that's not too far off from what I'm doing, lol. I'm adding story additions and a whole new dungeon and a bunch of other stuff. As long as you keep the free version available somewhere, it's rarely an issue.

Lots of devs do this. I don't think there's any shame in doing as as long as you're not suddenly charging $20 for one or two bosses or something.
Used a different game engine.

To be fair, I didn't have experience with any other back then.

Craze, I'm with you in that level design is something I really struggle with. After Soul Sunder was completed, I realized I'm better at designing levels than creating beautiful environments. In future games, I decided to alter my level design to be more interactive, like adding jumping and climbing points and hidden items to collect. Maybe even some light puzzles. Anything to keep players engaged while wandering around the maps.

My biggest disappointment to me was my poor first half of Shotgun Knight. I just barely managed to get a prologue done with the character decidedly NOT using a shotgun, and ran out of time I was going to use to tweak the progression mechanics of the shotgun itself. If I could go back in time and do it again, I wouldn't have included the prologue at all and refined the shotgun mechanics to something more fun.

If I hadn't made such a horrible ending to Les Visiteurs Dans L'espace, I might have had a decent game on my hands.

I did end up redoing the ending in a second release, but at that point I think the damage was done ;(
