hi my name is craze and i'm worried about item descriptions

So, I've been working on a project for a few months, right? I turn Karsuman's gameplay sketches into something functional. It's how we roll. But recently, it hit me: maybe my ability descriptions are too sterile?

I hate having to look up what something does, like if a skill that "changes with HP" is based on HP being full or at 0 or whatever. Etrian Odyssey and any game with a Luck stat does this to me alll the timmmme (although EO4 got a bit better at it). So, I started being fairly Magic-style with my descriptions, using keywords and being incredible sterile. For example, "Deals moderate Psionic attack damage and lightly debuffs Speed" certainly tells you what's going on. I'm not gonna include the exact numbers, because that's information overload and despite being anal about numbers in the background, I'm all about not making the player blow steam out their ears doing math on the fly. Still, "moderate" and "lightly" are commonly-used terms in the game so far, meaning "100% of stat" and "50% of stat".

But it's so boring. This is a game with a crazy alien princess whose raygun changes enemies into birds. Is "Inflicts Hex: Polymorph (The enemy is permanently changed into a special enemy that drops more loot.)" really what Rel needs to get her personality across?

After talking with Karsu and drafting some examples, we ultimately decided on using a more casual style. We still don't want to hide info from the player, but we don't want to make a goofy game have the dissonance of overly sterile descriptions.

Thus, instead of
Bull Rush - 6CD - Deals very high Steel attack damage. Has a chance to inflict Hex: Stun (You cannot act this turn) based on how high Ox's Health is. (At full Health, the chance is 60%.)

we're going with

Bull Rush - 6CD - Ox charges at the enemy with a powerful Steel attack that has a high chance to Stun, based on how full his Health is.

We're keeping a fairly sterile/definite description for equipment and passive abilities, but that's because they're more finnicky anyway.

So, what about you? Do you do loads of numbers and effects and keywords and all that? Do you just type up some words that hopefully make sense? Something inbetween? I'm curious, especially if you're making a very gameplay-oriented or very not-so-gameplay-oriented game.

Roll the Bones ~ Gacha in (Truly) Free Games

I play a few games with a "gacha," or a lottery you feed premium currency into for random game power. The two I've played the most over the past two years are Tower of Saviors (basically, the good version of Puzzle and Dragons) and Final Fantasy: Record Keeper.

In ToS, you get a playable monster from a giant pool from the gacha; all of the monsters are generally usable and are all considered the same rarity (that said, a few specific monster sets have a slightly lower pull rate than others; there are sometimes events that make them a more common draw). In FFRK, you get 3* or 4* equipment (meh/acceptable, respectively) from a wide pool but then have a ~10% chance each roll to get really good 5* equipment from the specific banner you're rolling on. For example, during the current Shadow from FF6 event, one banner has a few new and old FF6 5*s, including Shadow's unique item. The other banner has a few shared items, but is the only way to get Mog's unique item (but not Shadow's).

Understandably, I think, I prefer ToS's method. An argument could be made for pulling on banners to get exactly the sort of stuff you want, but they're only available for 7-10 days at a time... so I'm still not sold.

Anyway, let's say you wanted to make a truly free (not freemium) RPG with a gacha. How would you design it? Would it be how you get characters and their skillets? Would you only get equipment or special items from it? Would you have a normal linear RPG setup, or would it be more of a "boss rush" style of game? How would you gain the currency used? Would it replace any traditional RPG systems (i.e. no normal shops, only the gacha) or be independent? I'm curious to hear your thoughts!

The Power of 5% ~ Percentage Intervals

I like percents in games. I like having a 20% chance to get a critical hit from this dagger, 60% Fire resistance on my Pyromancer, or a status effect that reflects 15% of damage taken back onto the attacker.

What I don't like is getting a 2% chance to evade, or a 3% buff to my damage. What the heck? That's not even noticeable!

As such, I personally like to do percentages in chunks of 5%. While 5% critical chance might not be a LOT, I figure that 1/20 (especially compared to a d20.. which is 1/20 for any particular result) will happen often enough to not feel totally arbitrary.

Do you find that you have a magic number/factor/multiple that you use for your percentage-based effects? I could see 10% being a better, more consistent option, but I don't know if I could give up 25%/75%. I like my quarters too much. Or, do you not think this is important? Is it okay to have a 61% chance of something happening, or to have a passive ability grant 7% Poison resistance?

[TRADE] Non-Steam Heavensward for $30 Paypal or Steam games

Hey guys, I messed up and got the wrong key for FFXIV: Heavensward. I'm hoping to trade my NA NON-STEAM Heavensward key for an NA STEAM Heavensward key. I'm also willing to part with it for $30 via Paypal. Might be a good Christmas present for a friend or sibling if they don't have it but play FFXIV!

(Sorry if this should be in Welp? I wasn't sure.)

also c'mon rmn let's not start cheekbones again

edit: I went ahead and just bought Steam HW. Still willing to trade for $30 or steam game equivalent.

Fiddler on the Airship: The Best Traditions in RPGs

While I don't think we've had the topic recently, multiple times in the past of RMN and GamingW and the rest of the rpg-playing (not just making!) sphere, we've gone off about all the stuff we hate that rpgs (of any kind) do "just because". I mean, this exists. This is understandable, but -- what about things we DO like?

I'll start off by saying that I love key items. Tales of Zestiria made me so happy when I had to open up my menu and pick which key item to utilize. Similar systems like key words in FF2 (although I hear it gets annoying, I never beat it) make me feel smart, too. Yes, I do like the Ace Attorney series.

how do you make a traditional rpg

guys. help.

i've tried. i tried making kiddos. i couldn't handle making a game that was (kind of) traditional, with level-ups and tiers of equipment. it baffled me how many levers you have to tweak to get stuff to work the way you want when you have so many different methods of progression (xp, gold, chests, personal side quests...). gosh, it's just ridiculous! and yet there are so many traditional rpgs out there!

so... how do you... do it. like, how do you keep the game balanced and engaging? how you manage your many facets of progression? how do you plan out your equipment and stat gains and potion potency? how?? it doesn't make sense why you'd force yourself to do this, and yet you do it so often, as do professionals.

how do you make a traditional rpg, guys. let me in on your secrets.

FINAL FANTASY: RECORD KEEPER

Have you ever wanted to play oldschool RPGs on your phone but didn't want to deal with emulators and wanted a faster pace? Well!

It's a game for android/ios that lets you play ATB battles against all your favorite bosses with all your favorite characters. There's equipment to collect, characters to unlock and spells to create!

Best of all, you can totally enjoy it as a free2play player. You can get every character as their events roll around just by playing, not by spending money! Money gets you equipment that can replace limit breaks. It makes things easier but is not necessary, and the game practically throws the premium currency at you anyway.

If you tried it before, try it again now because today's update dramatically improved the game. It's now my favorite game on my phone/tablet instead of second-favorite. It's slick, it's whimsical and you can still get Locke if you're fast. (Next limited-time event is Tidus, if you don't already have him.)

If you have any questions, ask here! Now's the time to start playing if you haven't already!

The game also has a thriving subreddit: http://www.reddit.com/r/FFRecordKeeper/

Makerscore Visibility

So, this is what I see when I look at my submissions:

Games that I've made by other people, but am not the creator of the game profile (like Direvil Darkfort and Dragons' Descendents), appear on my developer profile: http://rpgmaker.net/users/Craze/games/ I've also been able to edit them without issue in the past.

HOWEVER, as you can see in the first image above, I have no idea if I'm even getting MS from them. I THINK I am, but it's not visible. Could we get that kind of visibility into the submissions page? And clarification as to whether or not some of my MS comes from there or not?
