Replacing Leveling with Different Progression in Established Games

I don't like leveling that much. It's okay but I don't like how you need to get all mathy like Suikoden to get people to the correct power level instead of over or under -- that just reeks of a poor system to me. It also bothers me when everybody has a level counter for themselves when your entire party is static, like in FF1.

BUT INSTEAD OF COMPLAINING, LET'S REPLACE!!

Hellion
Gain a party level every time you reach a new floor of the dungeon. Completing certain sub-objectives (kill 10 of a certain enemy type, open 15 chests) grants 1/4 of a party level.

Tales of the Abyss
The entire party levels up after fighting each boss. Unlocking Artes via usage is still intact, even if you can't start unlocking some until you hit a specified level. Capacity cores now grow based on how many battles they are used within, usually having max stats after 30-40 battles. Boss battles count as 20 battles for capacity core growth, allowing for risk/reward when entering a boss fight with less than the highest stats possible on a core. Also, certain one-off enemies hidden in dungeons are worth 5 battles.

Shadow Hearts: Covenant
You get stats as well when unlocking a character's unique skills. For Karen, due to her limited skillset, she gets stats from finding the Ring of Judgement hidden in each dungeon. So, dresses grow stats for Geppetto, dog fighting for Bianca, etc.

Final Fantasy I
Since the game is all about exploration, your bestiary works as progression. Killing an enemy for the first time provides basic info, and after four total kills you unlock all info on the enemy and maximum stats gained by your party. Rare enemies (one-offs and bosses) provide anywhere from 2-5 enemies' worth of power. Lighting a crystal and class changing all provide 10 enemies' worth of power.

Final Fantasy II
Normal leveling for the love of sakaguchi

PSA: LockeZ is a piece of EVIL and disturbing TRASH

5/25 notice: game is live! http://rpgmaker.net/g/direvil/

THE Z STANDS FOR ZAWFUL.

it has come to my attention that LOCKEZ is WILLINGLY HARBORING the most DESPICABLE and EVIL sort of """people""" known to ALL MANKIND. i'm honestly appalled that he has been on this site for so damn long.

I AM CALLING FOR LOCKEZ TO BE BANNED!

I FINALLY HAVE ALL OF THE INFORMATION I NEED TO PUT THIS STORY TO LIGHT!

so there are these four EVIL OVERLORDS. they have taken the form of INNOCENT CHILDREN in order to HIDE FROM MY LOYAL PALADINS. but i have proof... if you take the first letter of every sentence lockez has posted in the last few months, in reverse order, omitting all prime-numbered posts, a message is revealed:

EvilZ
I A M H A R B O R I N G E V I L O V E R L O R D S D I S G U I S E D A S C H I L D R E N

absolutely horrid. WE ALLOW THIS ON RMN!??!?! i'm ASHAMED of kentonA (the a stands for A CONSPIRACY???) and liberty (more like "ENSLAVING THE HUMAN RACE") and others for allowing this MONSTROSITY to TAKE REFUGE here on the once-idyllic rmn. we once had drama, but it was all showboating. now... now we have EVIL.

please meet my LOYAL PALADINS:

LEON the PALADIN+
The HERO of the group. LEON has gone on many missions with MYRA... but she has been KIDNAPPED by the EVIL ORERLORDS in an act of CRUEL HUBRIS. all it did was strengthen our resolve to find them... silly evil...

Pros: Can fight, cast and heal
Cons: Pretty slow unfortunately (in the legs, not the head)
Skill examples:
Myra's Blessing - Leon raises his Attack and Magic greatly for the next two turns
Radiance - Leon strikes an enemy with his holy blade, somehow healing the party

BENNET the WARMEDIC
The HEALER of the group. BENNETT grew up an orphan, but under Leon and Myra's care he has become a QUITE CAPABLE MEDIC. He can also STUN the forces of EVIL with his mighty MACE.

Pros: Potent healing, capable of heavy blows
Cons: Not very accurate with his weapon, offensive spells are somewhat weak
Skill examples:
Bennetiction - Remove all ailments from an ally and cause them to receive more healing for a few turns
Blast of Light - Moderate holy damage that deals less damage as Bennett loses HP

ERIS the HEXER
The MAGE of the group. ERIS is a bit snarky but has a heart of ICE. Wait... well, whatever, he's really POTENT when it comes to FRYING ENEMIES.

Pros: Chilling wit, strong magic
Cons: Super-squishy
Skill examples:
Tundra - A never-finished winter slows down all foes
Biting Remark - Greatly reduce a foe's defense and accuracy for two turns

CARMEN the VANGUARD
The TANK of the group. He was originally a clone of the witch CARMILLA, but wound up being the OPPOSITE: kind, bulky and excellent at singing.

Pros: Very difficult to kill
Cons: Doesn't really deal much damage
Skill examples:
Heroic Rock Ballad - Cure an ailment from each ally and raise their damage slightly for two turns
Stalwart Guard - Allies (but not Carmen) take 90% less damage next turn

WHETHER THE STAFF AGREES WITH MY DEFINITIVE PROOF OR NOT, MY PALADINS AND I WILL VANQUISH LOCKEZ AND THE EVIL OVERLORDS THAT HE IS PROTECTING!

STAND WITH ME, OR YOU'RE THE BAD GUY TOO!

Why do minigames exist?

I don't like minigames in traditional/semi-traditional rpgs. I think that they take away from the game itself, both as a player and as a dev spending time on them.

"But Craze, they're a fun distraction!" Why do I need to be distracted from your game? Is it that boring?

"But Craze, Hakox was really really good!" Okay, yeah, but did Xenosaga 3 need it? No, it didn't.

"But Craze, they can help tell a story!" I can understand something along these lines. The motorcycle escape from FF7's introductory missions was silly but served a purpose. I don't think it's necessary, but a one-off thing can be okay if you're willing to spend the time on it. Compare that to the time waste that is chocobo breeding, though.

"But Craze, dungeon gimmicks!" Actual dungeon puzzles that are a consistent part of the gameplay are 100% okay. Maybe you have a variety of mirror-and-light puzzles or sliding ice rooms. Sure, whatever. Go play Kinetic Cipher (Again) for more inspiration. But think of, say, that stupid follow-the-light part from FF6's intro mission, or that horrible simon says game to get the Crono doll (for a reason you wouldn't know of without a guide, probably). Uggggghhhhhhhhhh.

Why do you include minigames (if you do)? What's the point? Why did the big-name games need to bother? Especially for games that are already 20-30 hours too long, why include them?

merging GDD and GDT

so.

this is kinda sad.

while i don't necessarily agree with WIP's old 3-forum concept, i think rmn has way too many forums. even if we did have way more posters, we're splitting a bunch of stuff up for no real reason at all. i mean, at least we're not rm web, but... when the last post in the game design forum was me shitposting three days ago, we have a problem.

what's the point to keeping "development" and "design" separate, especially on a small forum? surely we can unsticky some of the ignored topics (lol seriously? topics that haven't been interacted with for almost year are stickied?) and then smoosh everything together (, and force people to see those design blogs because now they're in the forum that people actually use).

honestly i think we'd be much better off halving the amount of boards on this site, but i'm willing to fight for baby steps at a time. besides, the meat of this site are the gamepages -- might as well keep discussions tighter on the forum side, and let game profiles get more visibility (through things like the list of design blogs within the forums)

Taking Peach's Dress Off

Today's "create a sim challenge" for the Sims 4 CAS demo was to make a version of Princess Peach.

I made oil field heiress Belle Peach.

What else should Peach do in her alternate lives???

WYRM WARRIORS! Design a location!

So now that I've attacked towns in another topic, let's add some towns and other places to visit to WYRM WARRIORS!

This is going to run a lot like the "design your character(s)" topic, where you can submit a location using the template below. BUT! Before anything goes onto the master list, we're going to discuss it. Nothing will be put onto the master list until it has been ~24 hours since it was posted, and people have had time to suggest changes and build upon it further.

Why the more peer-reviewed style this time? Mostly because while the game can handle a lot of warriors given how free-form the plot is ("kill the Wyrm Wizard"), locations require maps, NPCs, decorations, etc. which all adds to increased time spent developing them in the editor, and more playing time spent in them. If the player doesn't really like Daji or Andri, they can ignore them. If the player doesn't really like the biggest city, then we have a serious problem! We also don't want the game to get too long, so having thirty towns would be insane.

I'm going to put a soft cap down right now of three villages, four towns, and two cities. Let's also say no more than twelve "other" locations. Also, please remember that poor ol' Craze is mapping these with the RTP. If you want a three-story-tall statue of Tolvinari in your location, you're gonna sprite that yourself and send it to me.
Also, major: WE ARE NOT DOING DUNGEONS YET. You might mention a dungeon related to the town, but those are the next topic!

Like before, I'll try to put up progress updates in this topic. I took a few days off from finishing Czarina Must Die/the DO SOMETHING event to cool down, but I'm gonna start working again starting now!

Template for settlements (villages/towns/cities):
Name:
Type: Village, town or city
Biome: Desert, plains, forest, mountain, tundra, arctic
Character tie-ins: Any characters that were born here, have a backstory related to here, etc. If they're not your character, please PM the character's creator to come in and approve/tweak the addition!
Districts: If it is a city, it should have three main districts to visit. Town/villages ignore this
Notable features: Temples, rivers, village elders, etc. etc. etc.
Description/other details: Put some effort into this, people!

Template for other locations:
Name:
Type: Is it a waterfall? A small shrine? A monster-less cave?
Biome: Desert, plains, forest, mountain, tundra, arctic
Character tie-ins: Any characters that were born here, have a backstory related to here, etc. If they're not your character, please PM the character's creator to come in and approve/tweak the addition!
Relevance: Why is this part of our country of Aremen? Has the Wyrm Wizard affected it? Is there a great treasure here for those who can pass the keeper's trial? And so forth.
Description/other details: Put some effort into this, people!

WYRM WARRIORS! Design a character!

Liberty is doing a two-day "DO SOMETHING" event, and because I'm job-hunting Craze, I said that I am going to make a game for it in RM Ace!

So, what is it going to be? WYRM WARRIORS! You'll be thrown into a small (...tiny...) country that needs to you slay the evil Wyrm Wizard. Your party? A group of characters designed by you all!

Everybody will be available from the start, and you'll be able to have five people in the active battle. The game will likely use Yanfly's basic scripts without too much fancy editing, because two days is a very short amount of time, even for me. XD

If you're interested in creating a character (or two, or three! More than that's a bit much, though), follow this guide! And maybe listen to this playlist as you work!

Step 1: Choose a graphic
Go to the site below and choose a character portrait! Nab the bust and upload it to imgur or wherever you prefer so as to avoid hotlinking. If you want me to use a different colored version than the bust shows (as we'll only use the busts on the game profile, not in the two-day game itself), just make a note in your post. =)

Nayuki's site: http://tabinoyadokari.web.fc2.com/ ("Material" is the third link on the left. It lists female characters and then male characters. Let's avoid the ones below the general male/female sets, such as the king and santa, since they're better as NPCs.)

Step 2: Fill out a basic bio
In the quote box below is a simple bio sheet for you to fill out. Anything not bolded is just a note; delete it as you fill things out. Please note that I might have to trim it a bit in the game to fit window sizes and all that, but I'll do my best to preserve it (and I'll PM you if it's waaaay too long).
Name: Max nine letters long. Can use any Unicode that the default Ace font recognizes.
Gender: Male/Female/Welp/Trans*/Genderqueer/whatever. If using a non-binary gender, please be respectful.
Age: Self-explanatory!
Description: Your character's backstory and/or motivation and/or personality and/or whatever. Please keep it within about four-five sentences!
Other: Any random things we should know.

Step 3: Determine battle abilities
The characters will each have a unique class, with skills pulled from a general pool (think of demons in SMT or the mons in Pokemon, I guess). Below are the stats and general skill pools to draw from, with another quote box to fill out.

Stats: Health, Skill Points (catch-all MP for any type of skill), Attack, Defense, Magic, Barrier, Speed, Healing. All are pretty standard!

Skill pools: Fire, Water, Storm, Dark, Heavy Weaponry, Light Weaponry, Tanking, Healing. Note that the offensive pools include debuffing and the defensive pools include buffing. "Heavy" vs. "light" weaponry is basically strong, riskier attacks vs. quick multi-hit abilities. A skilled fighter might utilize both pools. If you're still a little hazy, think of Heavy Weaponry as a berserker or knight's skillset, and Light Weaponry as a rogue or monk's skillset.

Focus/Foci: What the character is good at within their skill pools. You can come up with your own, but some good examples are single-target damage, area damage, inflicting debuffs, reviving allies, etc.

Class: Can be almost anything you desire; try to stay within the high fantasy setting.
Stats: Pick 1-3 to be above-average, and an equal amount to be below-average. If you want one to be very high or low, make sure you balance that out (for example, "very high Health but low Barrier and Speed," or "very high Magic and very low Healing").
Weapon(s): Pick 1-3 (if you pick shields, pick at least one more). Swords, daggers, claws, axes, maces, staffs, bows, shields.
Armor: Pick 1-2. Heavy, Stealth, Mystic. These correlate to the basic trio of warrior/rogue/mage.
Skillsets: Pick 1-3. Two is probably the best, but one or three are also fine.
Focus: See above description. This is a two-day game, so try to keep it simple. XD Think of it as what sets your character apart from other characters with the same skill pools.

Step 4: Write quotes
While this will not be a particularly text-heavy game, we want a little bit of personality in these characters! Come up with lines for each situation below (there can be multiple per situatiion):

-Victory
-Item drop screen
-Leveling up
-Opening a chest
-Starting battle (high HP)
-Starting battle (low HP)
-Staying at an inn
-Before final battle with the Wyrm Wizard
-Anything else you think is feasible for a short project, based on common traditional jrpg actions

==========================================================

...and that's that! I'll do two examples in my next post.

If this game winds up being kinda fun and worthwhile, I'm totally down for fleshing it out a bit more with you guys. If not, in 2-3 days you'll still have a character (or characters) in a short, dorky RPG! How exciting!

GRANDIA 3 -- What's with the hate?

okay so i've seen a lot of hate for Grandia 3 over the past few years, but it's always interested me because it's an rpg series i know nothing about and, like, it just looks interesting. i guess. whatever, that's not the important thing here.

the important thing here is that i finally started playing it last week and
this
game
is
hella
rad

so this game came out a few years after final fantasy x, a year after dragon quest viii, and two years after tales of symphonia. those are big names, and this game sort of... like... man.

if you take the ingenuity of dragon quest viii's dungeons, but subtract the punishing length/lack of saving, then mix a tales game's battle system with ffx's ctb battles, but make it SUPER-UBER-FAST, and lower the budget like 25%, you have grandia 3. it's a fast-paced romp with an emphasis on ADVENTURE and EXPLORATION and CUSTOMIZATION and FUCKING AWESOME BATTLES.

so... the story. it gets a lot of flak, but you know what? it makes sense, the characters have motivations, there's a lengthy and non-tsundere romance sub-plot, the villain is actually kind of interesting after first being just MUHAHAHAHA (which parallels nicely with Alfina's development over the course of the game), the guardians are badass-looking, and... just... you know what? it's not bad. i'm not about to praise it as high literature, but it keeps the ball rolling and takes you to exciting places to traverse.

the dungeons have a ton of side-paths, simple puzzles, obstacles, mega-enemies, and loot to uncover. the music is reused a lot but fits the general theme of an area, and properly special places get their due. there's something comforting about a ruin feeling like a ruin through music, y'know? they tend to look totally different anyway. (the two shots below are from the same dungeon, i'm not being ironic here.)

and when i say "a ton of loot," i mean it. there are so many skill books, mana eggs, weapons, etc. to deck out your party with. everybody has options, either personal (weapon, armor, limit breaks) or universal (anybody can equip any magic or passive abilities). it even has mana egg fusion, so you can merge eggs together to get the spells you want.

and, just... the battles. fuck. fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck.

this game is challenging, in all the right ways. you have a shitton of options available to you to design your party as a cohesive unit. who's going to silence the mages? who's going to focus on cancelling enemy attacks? who's going to cast gravity to move them all to the center of the field so that Yuki can use whirlwind on them? this is a game where you will be asking yourself these questions, and as you fight well, you'll feel rewarded. big enemies prowling dungeons usually drop lots of money and accessories... just saying.

and then there's the bosses... the BOSSES. i don't even want to talk about them, they're some of the most fun i've had in an rpg since discovered radiant historia.

so... yeah. i know that this is, like, an overly vague bundle of rambling praise. i'm too caught up in the game, i guess. here's a list of reasons why you should try out this highly underrated PS2 game:

-your mom is a playable character
-tons of character individuality and customization (yes, both)
-consistently challenging battles
-engaging dungeons with great loot variety
-feels like a proper adventure, not a drama-fest

here's why you should play for the battles alone:

-again, each of the primary PCs are unique, but also very customizable
-you can cancel enemy attacks -- if it says they're about to cast that paralysis wave, you can stop it
-spells and attacks come in different forms, such as lines, fans, circles, or just bombing the entire playing field
-spells each have their niche and definite use, including stuff like Craze (area berserk) and Fiora (area silence) -- crowd control is improtant
-limit breaks ("special moves") are easy to build up points for, and still feel balanced and rewarding. there's much more than just damage -- there are shields, counter-attacks, mana steals, weapon hit boosters...
-mother breed is one of the best bosses i've ever fought, period

very few games have mastered the art of making a player feel more and more powerful, while also not cheesing through the game with your new awesome +68 sword. grandia 3 does that, all with fast animations, slick menus, and a terrific battle system. 4.5/5 stars from me, no doubt.

Rhianna Prachett (Tomb Raider reboot writer) discusses gender/sexuality in games

http://www.killscreendaily.com/articles/interviews/tomb-raider-writer-rhianna-pratchett-why-every-kill-cant-be-first-and-why-she-wanted-make-lara-croft-gay/

There was a blog post—it was referenced in a GameSpot article “Fear of a Woman Warrior”—by a developer who was talking about the fear he had of creating anything outside white male characters lest he be accused of racism or sexism. I think there is actually a genuine nervousness amongst developers about straying outside those familiar grounds. That is why we get so many dudebros in suits—or Whitey McStubbly, as I call him—repeated over and over again.

That’s the familiar ground. But it’s not an accurate representation of gamers, it’s not even an accurate representation of developers! Developers themselves are much more diverse than the characters. Whenever anybody talks about a need for more female protagonists I say: “There’s a need for more female protagonists, but there’s a need for characters of different ethnicities, ages, sexual orientation, ability, et cetera.” We are very narrow when it comes to our characters.

But also you’ve got a situation where female characters do get scrutinized more than male characters do, and in some ways can be seen as holding a banner up for female characters. A lot gets heaped on their shoulders. Lara Croft gets a lot more scrutiny than Nathan Drake does, as a female. Nobody talks about how well Nathan Drake is representing men, or male characters in games.

You should probably read this article?
