my longest game takes 20 minutes to complete, a few hours is a solid lenght.

I'd wish i could say i'll try your game but you said its FEZ so I probably won't be able to try it.

Yeah that's the downside, 3DS only. :/

Wow, you actually have a finished game! That's a rare thing in these parts. Congrats! :D

Heh thanks. It's only a couple hours long. But that's a fine length for a handheld game.

So I'm guess I'm not really new, but a after a six year hiatus (and never being very active to begin with) I might as well be. Back in 2012 I was working on an XP game that I was really excited about, but then lost the files in a computer incident (backups are important, lesson learned). Shelved RPG Maker, did some life stuff, started a youtube channel, bought FES on 3DS because (oooh handheld game making!) and I'm back.

Honestly just kind of waiting around for my game page to be accepted so I can post some stuff on it. I know FES is not a very popular engine, but I found it relaxing to lay in bed and night and just build stuff. Took a few months but I finally completed my game (as small as it is). It was quite the learning experience for me, brought back some memories of working on my other project. I'd forgotten how much I enjoyed world building.

I can't say that I could ever recommend FES to someone serious about creating a "real" game. But as a toy? So much fun. Also great for prototyping ideas. I guess the next question is, for me, is do I want to take my project and remake and expand on a more popular engine? I don't know that I want to invest that kind of time commitment. But maybe. It's something to think about anyway.

Either way. Gold star Daria! Ya made something cool and finished it. Anyway now I'm just rambling, nice meeting you all. *waves*

Admittedly my experience with RPG Maker has been kind of sporadic. I jumped from XP to FES. I know FES is obviously going be a step down from the PC version but I really miss being able to assign directions on the collision screen. Like most other limitations I can work around, but that one just really bugs me.

...I don't think I can work on maps anymore until I at least get the sprite issue fixed. I want everything to be proportionally correct and that bed was too small if nothing else.
Practice making maps anyway. Even if you don't end up using them. You need to develop your skill and learn how to manipulate the tilesets. Your first couple of maps are going to suck anyway (because everyone's first maps suck) so you might as well get that out of your system on something that won't be used in your game.

Also advice, if you spend all your time agonizing over finding the perfect graphics you will never finish a project. Just use what you have now. And replace assets later.
Explain to me then how can I make a map if the maps that are "good" are awful looking to me and nothing that I want to make?

If you feel that way, why are you asking for advice?

Just make the game you want to make. But even if you don't like the style of smaller maps you will still benefit from practice. Level design is a skill like any other and the more you do it the more you'll improve.

I'd play it if I had a 3DS!
Heh, I hear that a lot. I'm starting to think I seriously underestimated the popularity of the system. :P
And I remember last year on the RPG Maker reddit someone was complaining about not being able to sell FES games...

Derp. I meant overestimated. But yeah that's
Crazy. No one would buy them. It is a shame though there's not a way to port the games to PC tho.

Currently building player customized housing as an option in my FES game because apparently I like self imposed challenges that result in a product virtually no one will ever experience. :P

Also, I'd argue (weakly) that there are few truly terrible ideas. Just terrible implementation. But the conclusion I have to that is the same as LockeZ, "don't be paralyzed, just try to be better."
