2023 Gaming Diary

Beat Cocoon, no idea what I was playing or what I'm on in my diary so far. I did try to stick to RS3 and get my bearings but it's hard to hook myself in since so many damn games came out this year.

Potential Cocoon spoilers but I don't go into specifics:

Cocoon was good but the last puzzle was so hyped up it bothers me that I was waiting in anticipation when I realized I was watching the ending. I kinda feel like the very very last puzzle was a setup where all the things come together and I realized the game was only interested in exploring concepts but not overwhelming you all at once. Which I appreciate because I thought The Witness felt like a stack of crosswords. That I feel like the only thing to look forward to was 20 more hours of whatever somewhat good thing was. Cocoon was just like aight, here's some ideas, peace I'm out. But it could have at least had a final thesis puzzle. There were def moments of back to back "my brain had a revelation on how this whole game actually works" moments though, and that counts for something.

you guys should change the rules more, the forums got so active all of a sudden

A.I. Generation and RMN

I definitely think putting the boot down prematurely isn't the best call, but i also think ai generation is currently a problem. It should just fall under a preemptive anti-spam or bad content rule rather than getting lost in these mental gymnastics and analogies. There's a lot of hypotheticals at play here which makes the discussion all over the place.

I don't see any namecalling or disrespect though. Passionate and heated? Sure but that's the nature of this discourse. I don't think it's anyones responsibility if a user decides to have a hill they want to die on, it's not like sidewinder was being patient about this either.

Yeah, if it's your own stuff, you can do what you want with it because it's your own stuff... well, within reason. Something like artbreeder using only your own images would be fine, but using your own image mixed with someone else's would be a problem. Hope that makes sense.

Is this an actual exception to the rule? Because it seems worth stipulating unless you're still banning artbreeder for other reasons.

This is a pretty awful move in my opinion from this site that restricts a lot of upcoming talent. I don't understand why it's cool and quirky to steal assets from other games, but then not use AI for a simple grass texture or reference;

the rips as a gotcha argument is getting stupid because it's always been a murky rule of what's allowed to be ripped and what's not. It's inconsistent in the first place so pointing it out seems really redundant unless you're pushing for rules to be more strict.

The point is that this is a hobbyist website; really, this shouldn't be up to a site's admins; this is up to the developer, as I will be truthful this site has a problem with the admins enforcing there beliefs on any given topic, and creating a chamber of only people who agree with said given belief.

this is every online forum, there's always going to be a rule created based on someone's personal belief. this site rejects games for not having enough screenshots or not passing a certain standard which is all up to a user with biases and whatever jurisdiction.

A.I. Generation and RMN

well the rule isn't "no AI" and arguing the apples and oranges of it is probably circular. the rule is "no ai generated assets", if you made a game with procedural generation that uses datasets then well, you made it at least. but if the actual game's code was made through automation, then I can see that against the spirit of what the site is for.

We've always retroactively denied things that didn't fit the rules. Games that we learned broke rules, for example - Hawkman is one that jumps to mind right away - or had stolen assets. This isn't new.
This becomes an issue when you can create new rules, that are then also retroactively applied.

If a gamepage is accepted, but then is later found to contain really edgy dialogue that violates site hatespeech rules, that's understandable.

If a gamepage is accepted and the game conforms to RMN's rules at the time it was uploaded, but then a later rule makes it illegal, that's kind of another issue entirely.

If you're going to apply ex post facto principles to everything you might as well apply free speech to a private forum or something. If a late hatespeech rule added in like 2015 retroactively got rid of homophobic or whatever submissions pre-2015, then idk I can get behind that. Not so much that I agree with retroactive illegality but that the negative consequences of a submission getting rejected just isn't that dire compared to the negative harm a submission could cause. In the case of ai content submitted to a hobbyist site, both consequences being incomparable to a humans rights violation (though we could argue ai being one but, not gonna engage w/ that)

What makes you think itch.io would align with your principles? Your reaction is kind of weird, does this actually matter? I don't mean this rhetorically, just kind of surprised.

i have an invite if anyone wants

[RM2K] Different messages for death states (Bosses, etc)

can also just check if the HP is below 50% and double the balanced/intended HP, do your custom death event then actually kill off the enemy automatically. only drawback is if the player manages to "one shot" the boss's original HP then it will skip it. But unlikely if the game is balanced enough.

@Reincarnation: I can't recall every site but here are some leads

https://web.archive.org/web/20051119082134/http://gamingw.net/reviews/ (surprisingly still functional clicking through a gamepage might be easier)
https://web.archive.org/web/20050308200401/http://www.blade2k.net/reviews/section_1
https://web.archive.org/web/20070223211641/http://uiv2.com/games.php?act=browse&sub=all (click through a game page with a star rating, lot of reviews seem broken though)
https://web.archive.org/web/20021127092859/http://www.radicald.com/ (don't think any of these work)
https://web.archive.org/web/20060321233812/http://rmdatabase.net/?id=games&act=game (review on game pages but dont know if their game pages even work)
https://web.archive.org/web/20050830081047/http://www.phylomortis.com/html/rev-main.html (lot of these work)
https://web.archive.org/web/20060614133549/http://rpgartisans.com/index.php?page=gamingshowcase (not really reviews, but summaries of games that might not exist?)
https://web.archive.org/web/20030211192435/http://rpgpalace.gamersuplink.com/ (RM2K Game Reviews)
https://web.archive.org/web/20011216072552/http://rpg2knet.com/articles.php?id=3 (doesn't seem to have reviews but does write about some rm2k games)
https://web.archive.org/web/20070322195450/http://www.sol-brave.net/reviews.htm

still online:
http://queenscourt.org/reviews.php
https://www.rpg-maker.fr/jeux-type-rm2000.html (in french and only really has comments but useful if you just want commentary)
http://www.monkeypro.net/games.php (has reviews in the game pages)

Best way to find these sites is to just click through the affiliate links, though it does remind me that we should get around archiving not just games but articles/reviews, or even having a clear map.

This little search has got me curious though, does anyone remember a site called cranky? bear reviews or something like that? I remember him trashing Tabernacle and praising Wild Card, but he had some interesting review commentary on rpgmaker games. From 2003-2006ish era i think.
