Final Fantasy: World's Edge

Well, I have mixed feelings about this game.

The story was interesting and left me wanting to know how it would continue. The graphics are nice and I appreciate when people try to be different and make the custom graphics by themselves! Though they looked a little rough around the edges it was a nice touch. Actually, that would be the best way to describe the demo: Rough around the edges.

The mapping could use some work though, and not in the sense of "add more doodads so it looks nicer" (Because it looks good already) but more like "Make more clear where you are and where do you need to go". I got a little lost in the city and some of the map transitions didn't help at all. (You exit the map through the left and appear at the bottom in the next map.) Nothing game-breaking though, except for a specific part. There's a section near the end of the game where you have to save someone fast, but once you are there, you'll find two doors, but neither of them opens up. I was stuck until I decided to open the project file and found out that you actually have to walk to the left in what looked like it was just another wall.

But probably, the biggest issue I had with the demo, was the first and only dungeon: The Sewer. It just felt like it was longer than necessary, like it was padded to make the demo longer. You have to go through a big map that forces you to go back and forth again and again while doing some relatively simple valve puzzles, but sometimes the game doesn't tell you what you just activated. There were a few NPCs in there, which make sense, but it feels weird that they don't tell you anything even though you are messing with all the valves in the sewer. And to make matters worse, there are random encounters, with the encounter rate being just a little too high. I just ran away from everything, as there wasn't much of a point in fighting them when they also level up with you.

Aside from that bad dungeon, I enjoyed the rest of the demo. I felt a little lost at times and the game has its quirks. But it kept me interested long enough to want to see the rest of the story.

In Search of Freedom

I finished the demo and I gotta say, I love the first half! The second one though...

The graphics are great, especially the enemies. The dialogues keep you interested in the story. The music was pretty cool too. The gameplay was awesome, I really liked battle mechanics. The first boss works perfectly as a way to show how creative and strategic the battles can get. Every character having a different way to learn skills keeps things interesting too! All in all, one of the most fun and promising demos I've played in a while.

...That's until Beatrice joins the party. I don't remember where I read it, but if I recall correctly, after that point, the rest of the demo was rushed to meet the deadline for the event, and boy, it really feels like that. The first thing I noticed that went wrong, was just after the next battle, where Beatrice just disappeared. I guessed that it was because I had a summon already occupying the fourth slot, preventing her from properly joining the battle. And effectively, after deactivating the passive skill that makes summons stay in the party after battles, Beatrice was back in the team (But also, I couldn't summon anything after that). She was also kind of buggy though. I never fully understood how Beatrice learns new skills because unlike the other characters, she didn't had a tutorial explaining how. She had Mysticism, which made some messages appear on the screen, so I assumed that I only needed to use it a few times in every possible terrain. The problem with this is that it actually bugged out the Ability screen (Maybe because I used it even when I already had all the skills?) which crashed the game every time I tried to open it.

Welp, I guess I can't keep track of my character's skills anymore, but I decided to keep going. I found another weird bug where sometimes when picking items from the ground a notification will appear, but the item won't actually appear in your inventory (This happened mostly with the "Stamina juices"). There were a few passability errors too, which I recognized because there were items pickups on the ground, but you couldn't walk through that terrain to get them. Enemies were also unbalanced at the end of the game, where before you could kill enemies in a few hits, they suddenly became very tanky, and I didn't had the patience to fight them after that. But I pushed through and finally, after all that bugginess and unbalance, I faced the final boss, and he... did absolutely nothing, he never attacked or did anything at all, just stay there motionless. I think his Max HP was around the same values as the monsters in the dungeon too, making the fight very anti-climatic.

Wew, what can I say? I love the original demo, the one before Beatrice joins. After that, it all goes downhill. I know that it was rushed just to meet the deadline for the event, but all the bugs and problems actually left me with a bad taste in my mouth. I refuse to let an unfinished part ruin the rest of the experience, but damn, it gets really close to doing that.

Live Free Or Die

I just finished it and it was a nice experience. The graphics and mapping are good (Though the Window Skin looks a little weird), the dialog is ok although it can get a little confusing when they start talking about past events and using acronyms that you don't understand yet. The gameplay is different, with most of your attack options dealing a set amount damage and stats not mattering that much. And finally, the demo is short enough to give you a taste of how the full game would be.

Some issues tho: There were two copyrighted songs in the game that honestly, left me thinking "wut, really?" and got me out of the game. Apparently, these songs are there due to time constraints, so it's possible that they will be changed in the future. Another one is that weapons have a set chance to miss, but you can feel as if it isn't fully balanced when targets in the tutorial can survive your attacks with a little of HP left in what apparently must be a one-hit kill. Another issue is that at the end of the game, you'll receive a description of what your characters did after completing the mission, the problem is that it uses a green font with a map as a background, and sometimes it can be hard to read the text.

And finally, my biggest issue is that... I didn't "like" the game. I don't know how to explain it because the game isn't objectively bad, but I don't know, it didn't catch my full interest. Probably because of the convoluted backstory? Or the gameplay? I don't know, but I'm sure more people out there will find it more interesting, this is mostly a personal issue than anything else.

Damn, someone liked it, I didn't expect that. Thanks.

You're right, that's a pretty annoying bug. I had no problem with it because I was always turned towards a tree, but... I might be able to make a fix and reupload. I'll look into that.
The lack of tuto, I want to keep it that way, keep the "you're homeless and must patch a solution for yourself" vibe yknow.

As for the spoilers...
These are excellent questions, they're even the whole point of this short game. I'm glad you asked them.
The Repent Loci games (and even the non games) are absolutely connected, and things like "what the orb really is" are questions of a wider scope than that of this short game. I promise you, each one of these has at least one explanation~.

Ah, I see... Well, in the end, I discovered the mechanics by myself without too many problems, so I guess it's ok to leave it like that. And hey, it looks like I have to play the other Repent Loci game someday! I assume that there will be more games in the series, right?

Wizard apprentice Lya

Oh wow, so they were actually different menu options? I had no idea, it really needs to be changed to make it clearer to the player (Though I also like the flavor text, there must be a way to balance them). And about the tutorial, it could be useful. Someone playing for a short amount of time will probably figure it out by themselves pretty quickly, but it's always nice to remind them. Especially in the early game for people that don't read the instructions manual included with the game.

I'm glad to see that my feedback was useful! I hope that someday we can see a full release!

Save the City

For a 5 minutes teaser this looks very promising. The battle sprites look great and it looks like the full game will have tons of fun action scenes that will remind you of classic arcade games and action movies. The only problem is that that's all I can say about it. The teaser is too short, ending just at a part where it gets more interesting! There are also some funny little quirks, like the main character having a "Sword" and fantasy armor equipped, or that he only attacks with kicks, never throwing a single punch. Of course, I'm sure all of this is due to the game being rushed to meet the deadline.

Overall, there's not much to say about the demo due to how short it is. But there's potential hiding in that little teaser.

El_WaKa what do you mean?

I left a comment explaining my thoughts about the game. The comment was so long that I decided to turn it into a review. It should be in the submission queue right now, give it some time while it gets approved

-repent loci- The Orb

I just finished this game and it was pretty good! I liked how the protagonist slowly loses his mind as the nights go by. The puzzles were also nicely balanced, though slightly too hard at first because there isn't a proper tutorial (How are you supposed to know that you can push boards that are positioned one after the other?). But I discovered the mechanics by just playing the game and trying different things so I guess it's not that cryptic.

There's one very important bug, one that almost made me quit the game. When you finish a puzzle a dialog box will appear (Sometimes mid-puzzle too) and of course, in order to skip it you have to press the confirm button, right? The problem is that the game isn't paused when these dialog boxes appear, so while you innocently push the button the game will also detect it as if you were trying to push the boards. This can be devastating as there's a chance of accidentally ruining your "escape route", making you do that section all over again. This happened to me both in the first puzzle (Where it was annoying) and the last one (Which almost made me rage quit, because it's a pretty long one) I had to cheat here and use a walk through walls cheat, because I didn't want to drop the game so close to the end.

There were some things that I didn't understand though (Possible spoilers ahead?)

Why is that orb so special? I thought he just stole from a regular store, what does it represent? What was killing the squirrels and making the bad weather? Was there something else going on on that street? And who's the woman in the end? And it's just me or there was a garden that we never visited? I guess many of my questions would be answered by playing the other -repent loci- game, though just at a glance at its game page, it looks like the games aren't really connected.

Overall, it was a nice game. A little hard but definetly worth a try.

Wizard apprentice Lya

I just finished the demo and it was pretty cool for what it was! I liked the variety in spells, especially the pink and fast one, and the repel and attract spells. The difficulty is a little on the high side tho, I was playing on the easiest difficulty and I still had some problems near the end of the demo.

One thing I would like to see improved is the shooting mechanics. You know, that "feature" where the spell only travels to where the mouse cursor is and not further than that? I can understand why it works like that, so you can shoot at stuff in the ground, required for a few puzzles. But I find it so annoying that I'm shooting the enemy, but my spells disappear before they even hit them. Other than that, there's not much else that I can talk about. I would like to see how far the game can get tho!

Crypt Challenge DX+

I just finished it and... I actually had fun with it! It's not without its flaws though.

Once I started the game, I was having a lot of problems with the first encounters, mostly because enemies can cast very devastating spells, to the point that if I encounter a group of 4 enemies I just have to pray to the RNG gods so they won't cast many spells. I was worried that the rest of the game would be crazy hard just like this, but once I got a second character and a few levels under my belt, things started to get easier and easier. The problems with the difficulty didn't stop there though, I would best describe the difficulty like some kind of rollercoaster, with very easy parts because you can kill enemies in one single hit, and then enemies that don't die that easily and start to counterattack... hard. It doesn't help that you can access three different areas, but some are harder than others (And the easier is the one that's the farthest from the entrance, with the harder being the closest one.)

Speaking of which, there's a very serious bug in the ice section of the dungeon. The fires blocking your path require a certain amount of Frozen Shards, right? The problem is that they require the EXACT amount. That means that if you were grinding and grab more than necessary, the fire won't let you pass. You can't sell the shards either, so you'll be unable to complete that section forever. I had to use cheats to get past this serious flaw.

Aside from that, there's not much else to talk about. The battles are quick and fast, which is a blessing because the game can get a little grindy. The skills are powerful and very spammable (This can be good or bad depending on how you want to balance the game) though I was only using the area of effect attacks for common enemies, and boosted attacks for the bosses. Speaking of which, you really need some kind of tutorial for that boosting mechanic, because I wasn't really sure how it worked and it wasn't until the first boss that I actually made good use of it.

Overall, the game was short and relatively fun. It's far from perfect and the issues can make it hard to recommend, but I enjoyed my playthrough of it.
