FULMINIS-ICTUS'S PROFILE

Hi!

I'm a composer living in Germany and I'm a huge fan of indie games. I especially like RPG Maker games. One of my biggest inspirations is Joe Hisaishi. I'm already active on the German RPG Maker VX Ace forum. There I'm part of the Ressi team where we create resources for the community every two months.

If you're in need of a composer then feel free to visit my website! You'll find my demo reel there and infos about me and my music.

but still enough room i feel for other game sounds to be layered over the top if needed

It's a good thing that you mentioned that. I almost forgot that if these pieces were to be used in such a setting in a video game then you have to consider that a lot of sound effects like weapon sounds, explosions or the shouts of your fellow soldiers and enemies will be layered on top of the actual soundtrack. That's probably the reason why the soundtrack from Vanquish doesn't have much melody. Because it won't really be heard anyway and melody and sound effects may actually end up working against each other.

It definitely sounds like something that would fit in a sci-fi game. You've chosen great instruments for this challenge in my opinion. The E-Guitar isn't a synth instrument, but it still fits to this kind of setting. This sounds like something that could be from "Shin Megami Tensei: Lucifer's Call" by the way. It doesn't have a sci-fi setting but the instrumentation is kind of similar.

The thing that bothers me though is that it doesn't really sound alerting or like something that would fit to the scene in the event description in general. It doesn't really get your adrenaline pumping. Perhaps it's because of the tempo which could be higher. The drums also don't drive the piece forward that much. And there are rather long calm parts in which the tension drops a lot.

In conclusion I'd say that the piece itself is pretty good (I especially love the returning part with the E-Guitar). But it doesn't fit the setting that much.

That's just my opinion though.

Fun fact: My piece which I started composing will be in G(minor) too!

What other tracks would you suggest for inspiration?

If I had to name a specific title I'd definitely recommend listening to the OST of Vanquish. I haven't played many sci-fi shooter yet to be honest so I can't really think of any better examples. Maybe the beginning of the theme of Black's trailer from RWBY (0:35-1:30).

I f anyone wants i cna make a list fo free-to-use- soundfonts .

Yeah, it would be great to get some recommendations on Soundfonts or VSTs which could fit to this challenge.

I think I have something in mind already. I'll probably focus mostly on percussion. But before I start I'll probably listen to some pieces from sci-fi shooters to get some inspiration.

The mix feels a bit left centered in general, especially the violin sounds it could be closer to center - or at least I personally feel it's a bit distracting when the entire soundscape leans too much to either monitor, considering the banjo is panned slightly left as well...

Damn you East West! Anyway, I fixed the panning and reuploaded the file. It's kind of weird how their VSTs are slightly panned left by default.

Sometimes I should really wait at least some hours before submitting something.

That's usually a really good idea. I even wait a whole day before sending off any pieces because it's easier to hear small mistakes after you've taken a longer break.

Summoner of Sounds

Aight, I just finished a piece. You can check it out over here.
I'm not sure why but as I was browsing my VSTs for some instruments which might work well for a quirky piece I came across the Banjo and thought: "This is the perfect instrument for this". I didn't have much time to study up on Banjos though, I just listened to some Banjo music and watched a few tutorials on how to play the Banjo.
My second choice was a bagpipe by the way.

This piece is loopable and has the loop commands built-in. That's why the ending sounds rather sudden.

I would really appreciate some feedback!

Oh whoops, good catch! The deadline is 1st of June.

Oh. That's bad news for me. I guess I should hurry up then. I really thought I'd have time till July ;_;

I really like the bouncy feel as well. Your piece sounds really happy because of that! The melody is pretty nice too.
There's only one thing I'd criticize: The flute sounds like it has some reverb effect applied to it (it could be that you didn't apply one but the sample you used has this effect built in by default). This contradicts with the sound of the other instruments which don't seem to have a reverb. What you could do is to try to find another flute sample or remove the reverb effect if you've applied one.
That's just my opinion though ^^

I almost forgot that woodwinds exist. I haven't composed for them for a while now...
Anyway, I really liked how you made those two contrasting parts. The one with a faster rhythm and more cheerfulness and the second part rather slow and more melodic (mostly because it's not as polyphonic as the first part).
I wasn't quite sure in what key you wanted your piece to be in though. It should be in C Major if I'm correct but the f sharps feel really out of place (at six seconds for example). There's nothing wrong with using notes which aren't in the key but in this context it doesn't really fit that well in my opinion. I guess the thing which bothers me most about those f sharps is that at the same time the clarinet is playing an f which leads to probably unwanted dissonances.
I looked at the piece in Synthesia by the way. This is the reason why I know which notes are played.

Keep on trying!

Summoner of Sounds

I just heard that this event exists and I'm totally going to take part in it. For me one of the best ways to grow as a composer are these kind of challenges which take you out of your comfort zone so this is actually a really great opportunity for me (and for all the other composers here) to become better. I'm usually quite busy composing for actual video games or doing other music stuff but I'll make sure to upload some pieces during this event and of course provide some feedback/tips.

RMN Composer Introductions

Yo! My name is Tim Reichert, also known as Fulminis-ictus.
I've been a composer since 2009 now and I've been composing for over ten different projects of different genres since 2012.

Link to the best place to follow my work:
If you want to check out my work then you should take a look on my YouTube channel.
I'm not only uploading original compositions on my channel but also piano covers and synthesia tutorials of some pieces which I've transcribed by ear.
I also have a website if you want to read more about my work.

Contact information for commissions:
This is best done by either writing a PM or an E-Mail to "fulminisictus7@gmail.com"

Music genres and style influences of my work:
I can compose in quite a lot of styles. I've composed electro, jazz, traditional Japanese pieces, Arabic pieces and so on. I think this is quite necessary for a video game composer so I'm trying to try out many different styles.
I'll just copy the part about the musicians which influenced me most from my website because I'm lazy ^^
One of my favourite musicians and the one who influenced me the most is Joe Hisaishi. He composed and is still composing music for the films of Studio Ghibli, the movies of Takeshi Kitano and more.
Another composer who influenced me a lot is Jun'ya Ota, also known as ZUN. He's the developer of the Touhou games.
I listen to a lot of J-Rock and Metal, so it's natural that I get a lot of inspirations from these musical stiles. I also like some Metal Core Bands (especially Atreyu).
Many japanese pianists inspire and influence me. Some examples are Tempei Nakamura, Yurima and Marasy8 (YouTube name).

My choice of audio software:
I recently switched to Cubase after using FL Studio for quite some time. I'm also using Audacity to do some changes like normalizing or incorporating loop points in the OGGs.

Instruments I play:
I mainly play the piano and some brass instruments (my first one was a trombone with buttons, my second one was a tenorhorn and the one I'm playing right now is the euphonium). I can also play a little guitar and recorder I guess (I had to learn it in school ;_;).

My proudest accomplishments (yeah, I have more than one that I'm proud of ^^) as a musician:
Getting my first payment! :D
Joining the (German) RPG Maker VX Ace ReStaff Team.
Getting first place in the Symphony contest on the German RPG Maker VX Ace forum.

Well, that's about it. I'm looking forward to reading the introductions of the other musicians and hopefully I'll find some new great composers ^^
