So, the Excelsior Scholarship...

It's, uh, kinda got me anxious.

The Excelsior Scholarship is a college scholarship established in NY. It allows students entering into college free tuition, but has some caveats. You only have 4 years, you have to use other available financial aid first, you have to work in NY for the first 2 years after getting your degree, and you can only go to SUNY schools. My college isn't a SUNY school. ;w;

On one hand I'd like to avoid what student loans I can but some of the restrictions kinda suck. I picked my college because it was the best fit I could find. Having to switch would be kind of upsetting. (and verging on too late at this point...)

What's more the future of student loans is kind of uncertain considering the current presidential administration. Might need to look into that aspect of my problem more though...
Well, the concept of Free Post-Secondary Education happening in our lifetimes is almost certain, but that doesn't help you today. We have at least another year and a half of Republican misrule before the prospect can ever be considered, let alone passed.

I've never heard of the Excelsior Scholarship until now, but one of the caveats being "you have to use other financial aid first" seems kind of self-defeating. Does that mean you have to get a student loan anyway o_O;? And what if you get a degree, but there are no jobs available in the NY area? Does that mean you're stuck with the bill until NY's employment conditions accommodate you? Or does that mean you have to work at a McDonald's on Manhattan Island for 2 years straight?

Based on what you describe, the whole thing sounds like a hokey gimmick, pretending to help the little guy while placing limitations that make it untenable for the average joe.
You'll just have to consider the cost of education vs the pay and employment prospects of your career path before taking the plunge into something sounding so half-baked.
Yeah, the scholarship is extremely half-baked. ^.^; It's ironically more helpful if you're just wealthy enough to not qualify for need-based aid like a Pell Grant but just poor enough to not be able to pay for it yourself. I'm not really in that situation so it's not the most helpful thing in the world. And I thiiink I needed someone else to tell me that since I was thinking it myself. :P

I feel a bit better about the situation now either way. Thanks!
No problem. Now you know and knowing is half the battle.
