Commercial Personalities

So a lot of commercials these days have a character as a spokesperson. Many of these are very comical. For me, it makes a lot of commercials more enjoyable to watch. I even get excited when they come on television. So I thought I would mention what some of my favorites of those commercial personalities are and ask which ones you all love most.

1. Old Spice - The man your man could smell like
2. Allstate - The Mayhem Like Me Guy
3. Velveeta Cheesy Skillets - The wield your skillet blacksmith
4. Dos Equis - the most interesting man in the world

What other commercial personalities do you people love?

Game Idea Concept: Can This Be Done?

So I have this idea for a game mechanic. Not necessarily a full game yet, just the mechanic. I am sure it can be done but I don't know how easily or even if I am equipped with the necessary programs and skill level. (Actually I probably don't have the skill level since I still haven't made a game yet.) I use RPG Maker 2003 and don't expect to be upgrading to a newer version anytime too soon. I am wondering if anyone knows how to implement this idea and if it could be done easily.

Basically it goes like this. A map has like 10 different types of enemies you can run into. These are randomly spawned every little while so monsters never run out. Now if you kill a particular monster type, say Bunny, than that monster is less likely to spawn. (It is like in nature, you are thinning the population.) Then certain plants or trees or something in the area can increase the spawn rate of a particular species and removing those plants (like for a logging profession or something) will reduce the spawn rate. If the spawn rate is low enough that monster won't spawn again. This would be bad since each monster type drops a crafting item you can't get from anything else. So when you kill a monster you have to do something to increase the spawn rate. Perhaps an alter or something that you leave that pay that particular item to. Like when you kill a Bunny you get "Fluffy Tail" or something. That is a useful crafting item. SO you can keep killing Bunnys to get it, but eventually you will want to leave a Fluffy Bunny at an alter or something to increase the spawn rate so the monster doesn't disappear. Or plant more of a particular plant. Or whatever. Point is, you have to manage your killing unlike in a normal rpg game.

What do you think? Is this a viable option? Is it even a good idea?

Earthquake in Japan

So... hopefully general discussion is the right place for this, but I was wondering what people thought about this Earthquake?

In case you don't know about it already, there was an 8.9 Earthquake yesterday just off the coast of Japan. It did a lot of damage on it's own but the Tsunami it caused had a much greater impact killing many, and pretty much crippling the communication, transportation, and electrical capabilities of the entire country. The Tsunami reached Hawaii and the West Coast but with fairly negligible impact there. An 8.9 is the strongest Earthquake Japan has ever had and the 5th largest on record in the world.

So... I give permission for this to turn into a discussion on the apocolopyse, or whether we should give foreign aid, or conspiracies on how this was caused by the bush campaign, or whatever else. I just want to know what people think.

Rpg Maker 2003 Item classification NOOB Question

I am working in RPG maker 2003 and have noticed that some things don't necessarily work the way they immediately seem like they would. SO... I was wondering if someone could please give me the run down on the different types of items.

More specifically...
What can be done with "Other" items?
What does "Material" do?
What is "Unique" about?
How exactly does the item as "Switch" work?
And what would I use to make an item give a TEMPORARY stat boost to a character?

Request For Feedback On Project Concepts

The way I figure it, I would be a fool not to take advantage of the vast pool of knowledge and expertise that can be found on this website. I am working on my first RPG and have some ideas but would like to get your feedback, suggestions, and any help that you are willing to provide. WIthout further ado:

The Game: Crimson

The Character: Lore Persephone, a vampire, and one of the most promising up and coming members of his coven. Lore is old but fairly young by vampire standards, but more important than his age is how well he has learned from his many years. He is a skilled warrior who understands that strategy is the strongest weapon of all. He is efficient, trustworthy, and loyal.

The world: Vampires are common, as are werewolves, zombies, ghosts, etc... Nevertheless Life thrives. Vampires and werewolves hate eachother (Cliche? Yeah I know) but werewolves are so primal and viscious that vampires usually lose in a fair fight. SO the five covens of the world work together as one to protect themselves and eradicate the werewolves. The covens are ruled by 6 Blue Bloods, 1 for each coven and then 1 to oversee them all. Humans know about vampires and some humans even run blood houses where a vampire can go, pay a fee, and have a drink from a lovely lady. There are also those who hunt and kill vampires though they are very very rare.

Classes
Wraith - a melee fighter with strong attack and an absorb effect with every attack. Since there is no healing class this fighter is also the primary means of healing. Abilities will be attack boosting or special physical attacks.

Blood Mage - a mage type class with strong magic. Deals magical based attacks and gives status effects to enemies. May have some buffs as well. These spells will be the best way on average to deal damage.

Reaper - a special class with strong defense. Every time the reaper kills an enemy with a physical attack it stores a "soul". These souls are then used to cast life manipulating type spells or summons. There may be a heal type spell as well.

Features:
A Day/ Night system - I plan to really use this system and not just have it for the sake of fleshing out the world. Monster encounters will change from the daytime to the nighttime. Most notably humans will be more common at day, and werewolves more common at night. Also, Lore will be stronger at night and there will be more vampires available to meet with or buy things from. Some areas may be unaccessible at certain times of day as well.

Class changing in battle. - I actually want this to be at the core of the battle system for my game. There will be three classes each with it's own strengths and weaknesses. It will be necessary in nearly all more difficult battle to switch classes at least once or twice to employ these differing strengths.

Hp cost abilities - being a vampire, the main character gets his strength through blood. In order to use most abilities and spells he will have to use some of his health. In my game health will be an even more valuable resource than normal.

Summons - The reaper may spend souls to create or call forth demons or old gods to join the party for the remainder of battle or until they run out of health. The best summons may have to be convinced to join Lore by battles or puzzles or something.

Rune System - Lore will not change weapons. His blood sword has been his since he became a vampire. It can however be customized by going to a rune master to inscribe up to 2 runes at a time. These may add an element or status effect to the weapon or it may just increase his stats.

Edit: I totally forgot to mention the feed stuff. So lore gains health form dealing damage because he is "feeding" on the target. This is usually good but there is some bad as well. Enemies will almost never cast status effects on Lore, but many enemies carry disease which Lore can end up catching from feeding on them. Worse still werewolf blood is posionous to vampires and will actually hurt lore rather than heal him. This makes werewolves a very difficult enemies.

So that's pretty much what I am looking at thus far... any critcisms, questions, comments, or help would be greatly appreciated!

Question about proper place to post...

If I am looking for feedback and ideas for a project at it's very early stages where do I post that? I don't have enough to really make a game submission and I know we aren't supposed to post games in certain forums...

Thanks in advance for your help!

Is Less More or More Less?

I've been reading up on a lot of forum topics and considering a lot of different games I've played while trying to decide what sort of game to make myself. One thing I've noticed a lot of is gimmicks or extras. What I mean is that games often seem to try and employ more and more customization systems, special abilities, added features, etc.. to make their game more appealing. What I am curious about is whether you all feel these things really make a game more appealing or if they just add a lot of clutter and muck up what would be good basic game?

Now I appreciate novelty very much, but I feel like these games with multiple classes, multiple resources to spend for abilities, talent systems, rune systems, weapon custimizations, 3 types of currency, factions to join, etc... can get to be a bit much. After all, can't many of these things be combined into the same basic systems we have seen for years?

Help with class switching in RPG Maker 2003

Hello everyone,

I am working on a single character rpg mostly as a learning tool but I can't seem to figure one thing out.

I am trying to allow the character to switch between 3 different classes during battle. I have created:

3 skills set to switches (One for each class)
1 battle event for the enemy group I am testing the process in that calls 1 of:
3 common events to change class that include a turn switch off clause at the end. (one for each class)

Each of the 3 classes has the appropriate skills to switch to the other classes starting at level 1.

THE PROBLEM: I can't find the skills to use in battle. I assume I have done something wrong but I don't know what it is. :( I would be very appreciative of someone who can help me figure the rest of this out.
