Whatchu Workin' On? Tell us!

Am about 75% of the way finished for environments and for Act 3 (out of 5) for a game I've been working on for nearly a decade. Progress has been in bursts and spurts over that period, going on hiatuses now and then. I'm sure you all know the feeling.

But I've come up with a workflow that is really working for me, and I am committed to finishing it this year... I think I can do it by the end of September. I've had an outline since the beginning, and it's wild to see more of it coming to life all these years later. It's an action RPG, somewhere between Link to the Past (general game flow and dungeon exploration), Diablo (three playable classes with unique abilities, and Super Metroid (acquiring abilities over time that reward backtracking)

Basically my plan is enemy design for the act (2 or 3 tiers each, per act), then map design which hopefully utilizes them well. Once all this stuff in place, then I'll do all the boss encounters, then finally the dialogue and sidequests. For me, it helps to stick to one or two game design elements at a time to keep up the pace and stay sharp.

Finally got around to implementing the Steal skill. You activate it in a submenu and it will highlight the possible targets (only NPCs who actually have something you can steal). Then when you try to "talk" to them it will instead open the Steal window where it shows you the items and your success chance. Failure will usually set your reputation with that NPC to 0.

Colors in the gif are a bit screwed up, but you get the idea.

This looks really dope!

Dead Again Review

You're very welcome!

Thanks for the tips. I had already found the secret ending, but thanks to your hint I was able to find the sewer and secret boss! (who got me the first time!) His head animation was actually pretty disturbing... nice work.

Yeah those zombie sounds were excellent. And I thought the SMT music was really well used. There's something about those SNES titles that is so perfectly eerie, such an awesome combination of visuals and music.

Thanks again for the great game Smokingspoon!

Hello to you all! Long live RPGMaker!

Greetings everyone,

I've been using RM2K and RM2K3 since their original, unofficial releases (I now proudly own them both properly through Steam) and have created many games both demos and completed, released and not, since then. I've watched the other big RM2K / RM2K3 sites rise and fall, communities that came together and then moved on. I am really excited to find this thriving site, it warms the heart.

I have been working on my magnum opus RM2K3 project on and off for the better part of a decade now, and I'm doing several things to help ensure that this is the year the project gets finished. I have a few other RM2K3 projects in various states of planning / production that I hope to pump out after that, but I am trying to be strict with myself in that RPGMaker time is spent on said project. I am trying to make the most of our collective quarantine situation by diving deep into my creative hobbies, and this is one of them. Can't say I don't have time for it now!

My goal is to make games that can stand out and really make the most of the engine - to really rinse it completely before I possibly move on to one of the newer versions of the program. Looking at several projects on this site, I am both humbled and inspired by the artistic and programming work of others. It is very motivating to see that there is still a vibrant community for Rpgmaker games to explore and share with.

Thank you for keeping the dream alive! I'm looking forward to soon doing the same!
