I gave Etrian Odyssey I the old college try. I've got a love/hate relationship with it.

I really dig the combat and enemy designs, and of course the FOEs are a wellspring of entertainment. But jeez louise it could really benefit from being at least a little bit more streamlined. I only got past the 1st strata and I must have trekked in and out of the dungeon like 12 times. The pacing is at a crawl all the way through and even though I like the combat, its no fun having to wade through the easier enemies on the lower floors while getting all their useless loot stuck to you.

Whoever thought that gold from only trash loot + limited inventory + you can only sell items One At A Time was a good idea was probably a FOE himself. I'm assuming they fixed all this in future games.

Other than a few QOL improvements, the games are all very samey. EO1 is pretty much the "gist" of the series and the subsequent installments are basically map packs. If you're struggling to get into now, it's not gonna get much better.

I couldn't get into it for the simple (and very dumb) reason that I didn't enjoy drawing my own maps, because I'm weird XD
You make your own maps in Etrian Odyssey? That sounds like a lot of fun. I might have to try it then!

I can agree with this basic sentiment, but it's atrociously underselling how important that quality of life and balance actually is. Early series classes are extremely unbalanced, have little room for growth and personalization, and are littered with worthless 'trap' skills that do little damage or literally aren't programmed right.

While all the ideas are there from the start, I don't think it really hits its stride until EOIII or maybe EOIV. IV also doesn't want to just rip your spine out from the first second, and you can progress through floors at a much more stable clip. It's definitely a more deliberate series, but physically making that map progression and having ample options to build a party more than make up for it. Or rather, the deliberate pacing makes those more exciting. If you just blew through floor after floor, who'd care about carefully mapping everything out?

EOIV and EOV both have demos on the 3DS eShop, as do the remakes of the originals as EO Untold and EOU2, though they're stuck with a pre-determined story party, which IMO takes out one of the biggest selling points of the series. All four let you transfer data to the respective full game if you take the bite. And they're pretty meaty demos.
You later get warp points (additionally to hidden short cuts that significantly reduce the time to go through stuff).
Other than that.. it's kinda part of the experience of seeing how well you can plot out your journey and head back in time/get cocky to reach the next big short cut or warp point. I think they make backtracking a bit nicer, but it's still there for sure.

Glad the series is getting some attention tho : D
Love/hate for you.. Love love for me <3 chill times

@Gourd: You do! It also works really well and saves you some time (such as you stepping into every obvious trap just to record it). It's nifty fun.

: ( I only wish I had more Etrian Odyssey like experiences. 3 is too expensive to pick up now (woe is me), and I don't own a 3DS no more. (well it was years ago) .. I played IV but none of the remasters. IV was neat (and you could speed up animations to be super smooth <3)
I've been looking into PC stuff but they can't nail the dungeon experience or chill vibes. PLZ EO FOR SWITCH PLZZZZZ
Maybe I need to replay *ponders*

I was pretty surprised with the map-making. I was positive it would turn into an annoying chore but they only force you to do it in the first floor and afterwards they do an excellent job of sprinkling in reasons for you to want to plop down map markers while giving it a fun tactile vibe. They handled it about as well as I think you could.

Still I don’t think you lose too much without the feature and just having a map so it’s kinda moot.

Kylaila, consider Labyrinth of Refrain: Coven of Dusk. i haven't played it yet but everybody i know who has loves it

Acra i'm really glad you made that post so i didn't have to. GOTTA DEFEND THE SERIES' HONOR. the only thing i disagree on is that 3 is good. 3 is not good despite the great theme and music. 5/4 > 2 > 1 > 3 imho. I put 5/4 on the same tier becuase tehy're pretty different games. (i haven't played nexus, it focuses more on what 4 did which i don't prefer to 5)

unity, 4/5 have very good auto-mapping. i actually play with floor mapping on, though i do my own walls as a progress/exploration check for myself.

OOooh, good to know! I'll keep a lookout for those! :DDD

Also, I enjoyed the demo of Labyrinth of Refrain and will prolly pick that up sometime as well.

Do you or Unity happen to know what the dialogue is like in the game? Also, does it pop up mid-dungeon a lot?

Thanks for the shout-out, btw, that is indeed one I have been looking at for a while. :) Too bad you didn't play it yourself in full.., I am so curious if they do things to annoy you while yer crawling in peace. So far it seems it's the only one available for switch that's worth it.

The problem for me is that it's NIS doing it. I love 'em, but subtle atmosphere isn't their forte, nor is mechanical simplicity/elegance. I play those for the funsies, not for the atmosphere. But it's the atmosphere I crave here. (I did pick up one NISA published on PC, Stranger of Sword City - and it suffers from incompetent dialogue amidst a decent story - I'd be worried to find that elsewhere. It's decent overall, but not quite what I crave. Still helps. On another note, I must've lost my copy of the Dark Spire somewhere and that's FGHFGH).

I will prolly snag it if I ever see it for cheap.

Edit: They have a demo? Welp ahah. That sounds like a good idea to check out LOL
Thanks Uni : )
I played EO3 first and found it harder to go back to 1 & 2 but 4 and the remakes were really fun. I quite enjoyed making my own maps, was a throw back to some of my earliest gaming experiences.

I haven’t ever got around to it but I keep meaning to make a script or plugin to let you do the same.
