Impossible Video games

"Young Merlin" for SNES.
The game is rather entertaining, but I hate those cart mazes.
The final Dungeon is a giant cart maze...and I finally throw the gamepad away with exasperation, and never came back to the game.
Shame on me.

Problems with Windows 7

Wolfcoder, I'm most certainly a big problem myself, since I'm not a pro of computers science. :P
But when I have a doubt, I ask...and as I'm very cautious, I ask very often.
I always can ask my son, who was raised among with computers, like all of you guys. I can also search the web for informations, so I never do anything risky or chancy.
I know for a long time how cautious you have to be with a storage device, and I was. Moreover, the HD stopped working within less than a week after, just after I began to use it with W7, while it was working perfect with XP..
Of course I can have made a mistake, despite all the precautions I described above. Everybody is able to make mistakes. But in this case, it would have been a huge one (hammering the HD, maybe? Or put it in the oven?)

About using Windows XP with a Pentium 3 processor...Well, this old computer was sold with Windows Millenium (Windows Me in English) installed on it. Even a slow Windows XP is better than a Windows Millenium, believe me.

Please imagine me smiling while I'm typing this.

PMs

Is there a way to delete (or at least edit) a pm that I've sent by mistake before the addressee opened it?
And by the way, how can I empty my mailbox and my "notices box?"
Thanks! :)

@Wolfcoder: I was just asking if there was a way. to delete or edit PMs.

Asking if the feature was available. Not if it could be added.
Shall we stop there before it begins to look like a silly quarrel?
I hate quarrels.

Problems with Windows 7

I've heard that the ultimate (and most expensive) version of Windows 7 allows you to switch back and forth to Windows XP, or between 32b and 64b modes. a clear sign that the programmers knew that all was not going fine with W7, I think...but I'm a wicked and cynic person. :P
If I understood correctly what was posted in the topic and draw the right conclusion, it seems that people using the US version are encountering less (if not no) problems, but maybe it's just me.

WolfCoder: I have to stick with Windows 7 for financial reasons, ...and because I had so many problems when I tried to make Linux and Windows XP co-exist on my previous comp (Linux showering me with error messages.)

@harbin91: an external hard drive should remedy to your lack of space: mine was 500GB...before Windows 7 "killed"it. (I have no other explanation, since it worked fine with Windows XP) . One of my friends got one that can store 1 tera, and there are some that can store even more.
All the RM games used to work without any problem with Windows XP, though the VX and XP ones lagged too much to be playable. (the root of the problem being the Pentium III processor.)

you would have to get a pirate copy of XP, but by their nature they're free and widely available if you know where to look ;)
Even if I got one, I would have to part my HD, what I already did in the past with all the the problems that it implies.
not if you use a virtual machine, it creates a virtual hard drive as a file on your existing hard drive. the virtual hard drive also has a rolling storage capacity, meaning instead of being a full-size hard drive it will only be as large as the files present on it.
I could try, if can legally put my hands on a version of WinXP Pro... ;)

I have grown fond of how reliable XP is. So instead of upgrading to a newer operating system, I've used Virtualbox's support for 64-bit guest OSs in a 32-bit host for the past two years.

You should grab yourself a Linux distro just as backup (I like Ubuntu myself). You can boot up and run the entire OS off a CD/USB Stick without installing anything. It won't save you from Windows crapping out, but handy to have around if Windows does get to a point it can't boot. You can boot entirely into Linux off the CD/USB, and access the hard-drive to backup files or whatever before formatting and reinstalling Windows. I've saved several friends stuff with it.

I will try...but if everything else fails.
First, W7 was pre-installed on this new comp, so I don't have the CD to re-install Windows if I do something wrong, or if I get as many error messages as I got from Linux when I tried to run it alongside with Windows Millenium.
Moreover, Windows 7 is a paying software. It has to work, and any problem youencounter with must have a solution, otherwise it's a mere hoax.

Extract this to the folder of an RMXP game that doesn't work and change Game.ini to use this RGSS dll. This is what worked when XP and Vista decided to hate each other and I'm curious if this let's you play the games that doesn't work.

Also can you open the XP/VX editors at all?

I did...and it just told me that the thing was extracted, don't remember the exact words. the I opened the game (Phylomortis) and guess what? Rgss not working.
But there are probably other details to be changed (RTP1= standard, for example? )
I don't know anything about game making though, so I can't answer you properly. Maybe I will pm you about it for more details (I don't even know if I made things the right way.)
I will try to find time and post screenshots, so that you can see what it did. Thanks a lot for the suggestion! :)

Thanks, Nightblade. I was not offended by those reactions, you know. In the contrary I'm quite happy to know that some people have no problems at all.
In an other hand ...well, I can't be happy that you encountered the same bugs I had, but at least it reassures me as a sign that all those problems are not due to my clumsiness.
Windows 7 doesn't show the files extensions by default. If I ask the system to show them, it will make the comp freeze next time I want to switch it on or out,
When I remove the admin's account then some programs will merely not be launched.
When I have to leave the comp before I entered the Admin's password then the comp freezes.
"Please wait before switching off your machine, Windows will install 32 768 important updates" (sic)
Windows 7 refuses to open links given via Mozilla or Skype, even though I set Firefox as my default browser.
In the same time, when I use CCleaner , I can see that I got cookies and such crap...from Internet Explorer, that I don't want to use! MAkes me mad.
Want more? :P

I don't know how to solve the problems you're having, but if I were you I would just switch back to Windows XP if possible. Way I figure none of the new stuff Windows 7 offers is worth the headaches it seems to be causing you.

XP == old software for old hardware.
Win7 == new software for new hardware.

Don't expect the latest to run on the oldest.

Well, one of my purposes when I made this topic, was to warn game makers that there was a huge problem there.
RM2k and RM2K3 games work fine with Windows 7.
Some RMVX and most RMXP don't, though those RM programs are more recent...

I'm running windows 7 ultimate x64 and I haven't had any problems with it.

well, I did have an issue where the computer will start randomly skipping frames, and the sound will skip and jump when it does it. but this only happens after it's been on for many weeks, without a reboot. also, end tasking msn messenger seems to fix it, so it's probably unrelated to windows 7 at all.

You said THE master word: Windows 7 ultimate. Mine is just "home edition premium". The fact that I encounter problems and you don't is a pure effect of chance, no doubt... :P

If it had been me, I wouldn't have switched to Windows 7 till it was completely bug free and safe. But W7 will eventually become THE prominent operating system, and softwares will be made for this version. So better get used to it as soon as possible. *sigh*

Anyway thankss a lot everybody for your comments and suggestions.

PMs

@Wolfcoder: I was just asking if there was a way to delete or edit PMs. I would never dare to give orders to anybody.

@Wip: for a forgetful brain like mine, it would be nice to be able to edit PMs, Moreover I'm veeeery able to send one to the wrong person...hence my question about deleting. Not to mention my awful English...
But as I told Wolfcoder, I just asked if the feature was available, and am now just explaining why I thought that it could be useful.
I don't really understand the reason why it will never be available, except that you are overloaded with more important work. But you took your decision, gave your answer, and it's fine, the topic is closed for me. I'll do my best to not be too awkward when I send PMs.
