Glad to hear and see that so much progress has been made! You and Legends of Astravia have come a long ways since 2017, keep at it Jaiden, I know you can release a great game!

Thanks Ozzy!

I think it looks a lot better now. Definitely the right move to make.

Thank you!

The REFMAP tiles were a great choice. They're timeless (look at Ara Fell) and easy to use, and I think this change is going to greatly impact your development process in a positive way moving forward!

Thank you so much riggy, it really means a lot hearing that from you! :)

Yeah I think the 16 bit is more than welcome here. Idk I was never a fan of a lot of modern RPG Maker art not just because of the look but because users were less likely to do edits unless there was some generator thing they had to rely on. I mean it's also compounded by the compatibility with certain SNES games but even then a non-artist could whip up some easy edits occasionally.

Good stuff

Thanks! I totally agree. Going into it, I thought I could make it work with XP's RTP since it was still kind of pixel style, but I started to find that those 32x32 tiles were just kind of a nightmare to make edits to no matter what I did. Then when I compared to the refmap ones that actually had some sort of a cohesive pallet, I realized just how all over the place the old ones were.

I'm glad to see that other folks agree, especially since it's a serious down scope.

A Peek Behind the Curtains

Maki's artwork is lovely as always, and those monster designs are great. They might be a little too cute though... I'm not sure I want to beat them up!

Can't wait to see more progress, keep up the awesome work :)

Development roadmap

I enjoy reading your write-ups, thanks for sharing. It's always fun to have a look into other folks' processes. And I also agree with LordBlueRouge--it's nice to know that sometimes we're all in a similar boat when it comes to the challenges, too, so sharing the "bad" alongside the good is appreciated.

New site looks great, and best of luck with getting the game finished by the end of the year!

As someone who translated their demo in 7 different languages the worrying part is just keeping track of everyone and hoping they don't peace out when the final game is done :grimacing: and yeah translation is its own gamedev endeavor and I do not envy having to do it for an RPG. Great detailed blog post, good luck on the Q4 goal!

Thanks a bunch! Haha I actually remember seeing your updates with the various languages and was really impressed after having gone through it myself. Indeed, the biggest hope is that you can keep the same folks. I was very happy with the translator I worked with, so when I have the resources to get the rest of the game translated, fingers crossed that they're still around!

Damn! Keep up the great work! Wonder how many languages the game will have at the end of the day.
Hahaha thanks Ozzy. For now, just English and hopefully the rest in Japanese! It was a huge undertaking, I can't imagine doing it in an additional language. I would love to have it in as many others as possible if the game does well, though!

I don't understand, can't you just use the left side for shift space? I also forgot shift was a thing and only used space most of the time btw.
I got halfway through typing up an explanation and realized if I swapped WASD and the arrow keys for battle input / navigation, you could still use shift/space as I mentioned. Disregard! That makes sense, and I'm actually more curious to give it a try now.

FWIW, my philosophy with the battle "Default" controls is almost 1:1 with how Super Mario RPG handled it. "AB Style" feels weird, and was an afterthought for folks who said they hated the default scheme. It needs a little more TLC, and getting input from folks like you actually playing it helps a ton, since I'm pretty numb to it.

Yeah the way I interpeted itChild of Light has an interesting philosphy in that vein worth checking out.
Ah ha, very interesting! I will check out Child of Light and see how it handles it.

Were there any interrupt mechanics in the demo? Surprised not to see it since Grandia 3 went really hard on that aspect.
I didn't get a chance to touch on it as much as I'd like to. It's a little unexplained, but electric-type attacks in the demo do "stun", which knocks a character back on the bar. I plan to do some more interesting action cancelling and the like and be true to Grandia, though. Head full, days too short.
