I'm going to assume Steam Direct is going to use some kind of sliding scale. If your game budget is less than $100k, it's $300. That kind of thing.
Or it could be something like ten times the retail price of your game (which is information Valve will actually have, unlike your budget).

In addition to what Trihan said, self is useful when an object needs to call a function with itself as an parameter. It can also be used as a return value, allowing you to call multiple methods in a single line of code.
#7. A question for y'all about download sizes.
I don't notice download times until about 200MB, and you'd have to go over 1GB before I start second-guessing my decision to try the game.
Also, custom tilesets and overlays shouldn't have much of an effect on your file size; it's the parallax, music, and video that will inflate your game. For comparison, the VX Ace RTP is 195MB when unzipped, and half of that is audio.

Writing gameplay mechanics into the narrative
I'd focus on what differences exist between the characters. For example, you could have an inscription saying that red tiles are death to men and blue tiles are fatal to women. Or the characters could notice differences in the tiles, like white tiles are so slippery that only heavy people can walk on them while black tiles are pressure plates that trigger traps if heavy people walk on them.

Have you done any work with VX Ace's generator parts? I'd love to see someone get the Face and Mini parts consistent with each other, specifically the hair colors, beards, and Acc_2.

I would strongly suggest to test it, as you get mostly all feature for free, the main things missing in the free version are the particle system and the multi-player. You don't like it? fine you didn't lose anything either.
Okay, so I created an account, and tried out the sample game Spirit. And right away (the room where you choose a physical body) I hit a bug/bad tile and now my char can't move. And there's no way to even start over except by creating a new master account because you use the same account for making and playing games.
Not a good first impression. But it is a great example of why I don't want real time pixel movement.
