#rpgmaker.net IRC channel not registered

So having noticed a lack of OPs on our IRC channel lately, I asked ChanServ what was up. That was the answer I got.

Since #rpgmaker.net still is our official IRC channel as far as I know, one of the staff members should re-register it. There are always some people around so it's not likely the channel might get stolen by someone (channel needs to be empty with just you in it to register it, outside of assistance from an IRC network admin), but it still looks bad having it not registered properly.

As a large number of us will likely know, the REFMAP resource suite and its host First Seed Material have been a long-standing fixture in the RPG Maker community. REFMAP has long been the gold standard to which all other original resource works are compared.

Today, I unfortunately came to find out that Tekepon, the home of First Seed Material and REFMAP, has died and gone away from the internet. Eaten by the passing sands of time. May it rest in peace.

First Seed Material URL (no longer working): http://www.tekepon.net/fsm/ (last checked 05/24/14)
Wayback Machine URL: http://web.archive.org/web/20140214073503/http://www.tekepon.net/fsm/

What can we as a community do about this?
While this is a sudden and very sad turn of events, I believe that we as the RPG Maker community should come together and commence an operation to recover as much of the lost First Seed Material and REFMAP resources as feasibly possible. First Seed Material and REFMAP have had a lasting impact in our community and I feel it is our duty to ensure that they are not forgotten.

To this end I have searched for and uploaded to my locker the following official (as provided on FSM prior to its demise) REFMAP resource collection archives:
http://rpgmaker.net/media/content/users/6088/locker/project2000.exe - RPG Maker 2000 resource archive.
http://rpgmaker.net/media/content/users/6088/locker/project2003.exe - RPG Maker 2003 resource archive.
http://rpgmaker.net/media/content/users/6088/locker/vx_sample.exe - RPG Maker VX resource archive.

I have also procured and uploaded the two game archives for Material Quest Vol. 1 & 2, which served as sample games showcasing REFMAP resources in action:
http://rpgmaker.net/media/content/users/6088/locker/material_vol1.exe
http://rpgmaker.net/media/content/users/6088/locker/material_vol2.exe

Please note that you must extract and run the games under Japanese locale (emulators like AppLocale will also work) in order for them to function properly.

PepsiOtaku's archive:

Here's all the 2000/2003 resources I have that are FSM. Oddly enough, I don't have any of the actual people charsets, but I have all the chipset related charsets, as well as monsters.

I included all of the chipsets, including some popular edits and obscure ones found through the forum. I also included the mackie facesets, of which I believe are all there, as well as the roco facesets (although I'm not sure those count).

Okay here are the 2K3 side battlers I told you about, as well as some random extras, like the pixel facesets which you might not have.

First Seed Battlers

The ones in this style:

GrandmaDeb's Mediafire mirror for vx_sample.exe:

If you have the vx_sample game you have 27 char sets and the tiles. =]

Mack's two-tile high Characters and outstanding Tiles from his Blog, available in a VX sample game (You do not need VX to access the tiles and character files.)

(please do not repost this link elsewhere - thank you.)

GrandmaDeb's archive of Mackie's facesets (also available inside PepsiOtaku's and Little Wing Guy's archives above):
GrandmaDeb, on 24 May 2014 - 04:40 AM, said:
I do not have have the original compressed file by Mackie, which I believe was called face_m,

and held sixteen files with sixteen faces each.

But this is the complete set, I believe.

Here are Mackie's Faces

What are we missing?
As of writing (05/18/2014), we are missing any and all resources that were not covered under the archives I have uploaded above. A good example are the sets of REFMAP facesets. The two Material Quest games contain some of Mackie's facesets, but they are far from being complete.

As of 05/20/2014 we are still missing the two facesets done by 梅 (Ume). I believe we have most of the facesets by Mackie and わちゃ (Wacha), if anyone can cross-reference that would be awesome. PepsiOtaku and Little Wing Guy have also provided a plethora of REFMAP-related/derived stuff, thanks guys!

It would also be greatly appreciated if other community members can mirror the archives we have provided above. Having only RMN as the only source to download these archives is unreliable from a POV of redundancy.

The First Seed Material Terms of Use (the English translation is unfortunately not available) does not state any restrictions to redistribution of REFMAP resources or the Material Quest games as long as such actions do not infringe upon laws and regulations in your region and do not harm or defame First Seed Material.

Closing words
If an administrator or applicable staff member can sticky this topic and bring more attention to First Seed Material's demise, it would be highly appreciated. I was unaware that FSM was gone and the revelation honestly took me by surprise.

EDIT: I sincerely apologize for the triple post. I have no idea how that happened beyond that this post took forever to post itself.

Contact Information section of user profiles need updating

The contact information section for user profiles, shown in the screenshot above, needs updating. Specifically, please:

* Remove MSN, MSN Messenger service was discontinued back around April of last year (except in China).
* Add Skype, which is billed as the official replacement for MSN Messenger besides being a complete chat/voice chat service itself. Not sure why Skype isn't here already.

SOPA 2013 (aka: streaming "copyrighted material" == felony)

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/the-switch/wp/2013/08/05/sopa-died-in-2012-but-obama-administration-wants-to-revive-part-of-it/
https://www.techdirt.com/articles/20130805/12472124074/administration-cant-let-go-wants-to-bring-back-felony-streaming-provisions-sopa.shtml

Heads up, SOPA is raring it's damned ugly head again, this time going after streamers of "copyrighted materials" and making such an act a felony. And mind you, that's "copyrighted materials" in the vaguest sense of the word possible, true to SOPA-style legislation.

I was apparently one month behind on the news, obviously, but it's better late than never seeing as there doesn't seem to be any topic about this here as far as I can tell from a quick look-through. RMN isn't distant from this issue since stuff like Let's Plays fall exactly under the kind of stuff Congress is going after.

It's not much, but it's a start.

EDIT2: Grammar fix.

Opera web browser moving over to Webkit

http://www.opera.com/press/releases/2013/02/13/

To provide a leading browser on Android and iOS, this year Opera will make a gradual transition to the WebKit engine, as well as Chromium, for most of its upcoming versions of browsers for smartphones and computers.

"The WebKit engine is already very good, and we aim to take part in making it even better. It supports the standards we care about, and it has the performance we need," says CTO of Opera Software, Håkon Wium Lie. "It makes more sense to have our experts working with the open source communities to further improve WebKit and Chromium, rather than developing our own rendering engine further. Opera will contribute to the WebKit and Chromium projects, and we have already submitted our first set of patches: to improve multi-column layout."

http://news.cnet.com/8301-1023_3-57569106-93/opera-embraces-webkit-in-browser-brain-transplant/

Opera Software, an independent voice in the browser market since the 1990s, will dramatically change its strategy this year by adopting the WebKit browser engine used by Safari and Chrome.

The Norwegian company announced the move today and said it will show off the first fruits of the work with a WebKit-based version of its Android browser at the Mobile World Congress show in less than two weeks. But the company will move to WebKit for its desktop browser, too.

A browser engine processes the Web page instructions written in HTML, JavaScript, and CSS then renders the results on screens. The engine is increasingly important as the developer world expands from static Web pages to dynamic Web apps.

While this will be of minor news to most people, this is sad news for us developers and enthusiasts since this means the death of Presto (Opera's in-house web browser engine) and consolidation of major web browser engines into now just Gecko (Mozilla), Trident (Microsoft), WebKit (Google/Apple), and other smaller engines like KHTML (KDE).

Opera as we used to know it will slowly devolve into just another fork of Chromium, which is the base browser from which Google Chrome is derived.

RIP Opera, you will be missed.

Intel discontinuing socketted CPUs

http://www.zdnet.com/intel-preparing-to-put-an-end-to-user-replaceable-cpus-7000008024/
http://semiaccurate.com/2012/11/26/intel-kills-off-the-desktop-pcs-go-with-it/

Intel is moving over to "Ball Grid Array" CPUs with their upcoming Broadwell architecture CPUs coming out some time next year.

What this basically means is that Intel's new CPUs will now all come soldered onto their motherboards, there will be absolutely no way to change out CPUs like we can right now. For those of us that build our own computers and/or tinker with them, we can pretty much kiss the prospect (at least with regards to the CPU) goodbye. And no, socketted Intel CPUs won't be making any long-term comeback if those articles are any indication.

Yes, I know, the Intel Atom and their other mobile-type CPUs are also all soldered directly onto their motherboards, but this change actually holds legitimate implications for PC enthusiasts since the change is for "desktop" form-factors rather than the mobile market which was always restrictive due to space-constraints.

I sincerely hope AMD doesn't follow suit in this. Software is already getting more controlled and restricted by the likes of Apple and now Microsoft with Windows 8, and now the hardware unsurprisingly seems to be going in that direction as well.

Really, all I have to say is this: F*ck you, Intel.

No DX11.1 for Windows 7

Seeing as many of us here are PC gamers, this is probably relevant to our interests.
