This week I have been taking a unity class. I learned C++! Now I can make plugins all on my own!

Also I made finally New York 2025 (formerly New York 2023) during class. The game should be up this weekend.

What exactly is and isn't allowed on this site when it comes to rips in our games?

author=pianotm
Notice there are still engine selections on the gamepage for the pirated RPG Maker engines, identified as RPG Tsukuru in the system.

Rip content from corporate studio games at your own peril, but don't dare rip it from fellow indie devs.

White Screw
First Seed Materials
Milano Cat
Kevin MacLeod at Incompetech
and a lot others provide a wealth of free materials that you can use. More than you could ever need to make a game. Granny's List compiles free materials from all over the internet. There's even a ton of free stuff here.

Why do people even think they need to rip?

People use rips because not everyone can compose, sprite, and do everything else needed for gamedev as one person. For me it took me years to get to an even slightly competent level when it comes to spiriting, and it's so much work so often times I don't bother with making my own custom sprites unless I have to or really have the ambition to. The one thing my games rip for is music, especially ever since I got the graphics all figured out through a combonation of RTP, Aekaschics' patreon, and my own art talent. Music is the thing I struggle with the most.

Often times I find this absolutely incredible song that would fit perfectly in my game, sometimes even better than what was originally intended in it's home game. The only way to accomplish that without ripping is to compose a sound-alike, which countless games have done before. Ace Attorney ripped off the Cheetamen theme, and Dragonspiral Tower from Pokemon Black and White ripped off Secret of the Forest from Chrono Trigger, Chrono Trigger ripped off the RickRoll, and countless others. But that's besides the point. To compose good songs that fit your game, you'll need to know how to make music. So, you either learn yourself (which takes a good 5 years to do) or commission someone thousands to make songs for you. And even then, for some people it's literally impossible to learn how to compose due to the way their brain is structured making it impossible for them to comprehend written music even if they have a perfect sense of rhythm and flow. (aka me)

I know there are a lot of free and even some good and cheap paid assets out there, but most of the time those assets cannot cover what the developer is trying to do so they are forced to use rips to cover those bases. Not everyone is a Toby Fox or Concerned Ape that can do everything themselves. You either need to suck it up and learn like 8 different skills to be able to make something actually good or pay multiple artists thousands for commissions.

I'm aware of McLeaod and his library of royalty free music, but honestly his songs are a complete joke. They're good quality, but they've been so overused across so many shitposts and video essays on the internet that they are instantly recognizable and would turn any normally serious game into a living joke. Using McLeaod as your OST is a terrible idea, (no hate) as his music are all living memes and are used everywhere, especially in the early 2010s when I grew up. It's a similar case to the VX Ace RTP music being downright incredible, but being so overused in so many bad games that it became unfortunately associated with bad RPG Maker games, though this sentiment had died down with the rise of MV as the go-to engine for noobs instead of VX Ace.

But arguing for or against rips is not what this post is about. It's about in the site's rules what qualifies as an indie game. There are indie games far more popular and successful than most AAA titles like Minecraft, Terraria, PUBG, Human Fall Flat, and various others. Heck, minecraft is literally the best selling video game of all time. Is Undertale an indie game? So therefore it's against the rules to use Undertale music in your games? What if it's an undertale fan game? It sold over 3.5 million copies, and that's only from the PC version. What about Terraria? I blatantly had Skeletron (a popular boss form Terraria) in Dragon Ascension and no one made a peep. Chronicles: The Lost Page used a song from the visual novel "Sorcery Joker" which I'm not sure is considered an indie game or not. Is it even a game? It's literally just an anime+novel with no gameplay. Liberty herself played the game (Chronicles the Lost Page) on stream and had no issue with it, even after I mentioned what game the battle theme was from. I just don't get what the rules are.

Heck, I didn't even know about this rule until I used slime rancher sprites for Meteo Chronicles initially and the game got denied. How come that game got denied initially, but Dragon Ascension and Chronicles the Lost Page isn't? Why is it not stated clearly in the rules page about what assets are and are not allowed to be used in your game? What about remixes? Fan man music? Mods and asset packs? There is no definite ruling on what assets are and are not allowed to be in your game. RPG Maker Web makes it clear that no rips are allowed whatsoever in any form, but here it's sort of a given with anything posted on here. If all rips were banned, like 75% of all games on here would be delisted including countless classics.

No hate or anger towards anyone in particular, I'm just confused on what the rules are.

What exactly is and isn't allowed on this site when it comes to rips in our games?

So, I know that this site allows rips to be used in your games. Aka images, battlers, music, etc. And when I mean rips, I mean copyrighted material from another game to be used in your own. Unlike other forums like RPG Maker Web that don't allow any sort of pirated content/rip whatsoever including rips, since this website (RMN) was formed on the backs on hobbyists using a pirated illegal version of RM2K from back in the day due to their being no other option, this site allows rips to be used in games. I used to think this rule was unlimited, however one time while posting a game a while back (I think it was the OG Meteo Chronicles) I used sprites from the indie game Slime Rancher that got be a warning and my game being denied. Apparently, you aren't allowed to use rips from "indie games" with the explanation that it's "exploiting fellow hobbyists just like you." What I'm not getting is what exactly is considered an "indie game," as there are a lot of definitions. Apparently Slime Rancher is included as an "indie game" and thus using assets/rips from it are banned. But what other games are included? Undertale is technically an indie game, and it has sold millions of copies and became a worldwide phenomenon. Is using assets (mainly music) from Undertale against the rules? What about Minecraft? That game started out as an indie game and it's literally the best selling game of all time. Minecraft also allows anyone to create, publish, and sell unofficial Minecraft fanfiction in stores and monetize fan-made servers, (as long as it isn't pay-to-win or uses crypto) so copyright obviously isn't an issue for that game's devs. Another thing I would like to point out is one of my early games, Dragon Ascension, heavily used assets from the game Terraria, another indie game, albeit one that is currently the 11th bestselling game of all time. Assets from Terraria were even used for the screenshots, yet the game was never taken down. So is terraria not considered an indie game? What is the threshold for games allowed to be ripped and games now allowed? Is Tetris CDI an indie game? What about mods like Terraria Calamity? What about indie YouTube channels making remixes to songs from AAA and indie games alike? What exactly is and isn't allowed in the unwritten "no rips from indie games" rule? I would like some clarification, as this has bugged me for years and I'm afraid that I'll randomly break the rule without noticing and get banned. Thank you for your time.

Are vampires overdone?

author=RedMask
Depends on how you portray the vampire. You can have your own unique take on vampires after all. Side Note: I think Zombies are more overdone but again that to can be given a unique spin.

Zelda did a really cool thing with it's zombies, at least in earlier games. In early Zelda games ReDeads aren't actually undead, they are actually more golem-like being made out of cursed clay only meant to resemble corpses for intimidation factor. IDK about the ReDeads in ToTK as they're clearly a lot more biological there, but in OoT/MM/WW ReDeads were specifically made out of cursed clay and were not the living dead like people claimed.

Are vampires overdone?

You don't have to be original to make a good story. Nothing is truly original, every single aspect of every single story uses numerous tropes that date back all the way to ancient times and mythology. What really matters when writing a story is the actual writing. You can have generic "Vaaah I will svuck youvre bvlood!" vampires and still have a compelling plot or try doing something more "original" and yet have an awful plot. It really depends on the writing. But in JRPGs, no, I don't think vampires are overdone. Heck, I think they're UNDER done. Not many rpgs have vampires as a major antagonistic force. Usually it's FPS games so they don't have to used tired zombies as enemies and vampires are close enough and gritty DMC-styled action games. Mermaids are also underdone in RPGs in spite of their insane popularity, probably because of the complications of creating separate underwater areas and swimming controls. But that's besides the point.

Now, for some inspiration. In my games vampires exist, but I tend to portray them a lot more sympathetically/neutrally being a more so lawful-neutral race who aren't just pure evil, though they are heavily ostracized by society. They are powerful wizards who uncovered the secret to eternal youth using dark magick, but this came at the cost of them being weakened by sunlight and needing to drink human blood to not go insane and start eating people. They aren't undead, just wizards caught up in an unfortunate curse/blessing based on how you look at it. Many people willingly become vampires knowing the risk, either for their own vanity/fear of getting old and/or to gain further magickal might. Many vampires make pacts with the local people groups to willingly trade the people's blood (which is medically extracted and shipped to the vampires domain, no neck biting) for the vampire's protection, which is very important when the world is constantly being besieged by incredibly powerful monsters 24/7 and civilization is constantly under threat, requiring powerful magick wards to protect towns from attacks.

That Time Where Nostalgia Made You Cry

So back in the day (like, 2015 or so) I made a game called "Zero Gear Fighters." You might have heard of it. In that game it used a very specific song from Final Fantasy V called "home sweet home," which my brain deeply associated with Zero Gear Fighters and my early experiences with RPG Maker and this community. Then, years and years later, a few months ago I was playing Final Fantasy V for the first time on Switch with the pixel remaster version. I sat there, playing through the early parts of the game, all until a very familiar song played...

Home Sweet Home. That same song I used a crappy midi of back when I made Zero Gear Fighters, now given a beautiful, awe-inspiring remix. Nostalgia began to rush through my veins as I recalled the Christmas morning that I received RPG Maker VX Ace, the time I first created my account on RMN, dragonsprit99, on recommendation from a RPG Maker Guide Book from 2008, and countless other memories. It literally made me burst into tears being reminded of days long gone by, just with a simple song from a 20 year old game. That song I still deeply associate with Zero Gear Fighters, my first real RPG Maker game, a game that still holds so much nostalgia for me. (Cheese with hot sause anyone?)

There as also that time I randomly stumbled across the OST for Sonic X on Leapster that made me burst out laughing remembering how much of a banger that game's OST was only limited by a god-awful soundchip, also from nostalgia. Any time any of you had this feeling where you got an extreme emotional response from nostalgic video game music?

What Videogames Are You Playing Right Now?

Octopath Traveler II: I've done all but one chapter 1 (and Oswald's chapter 2 of course) and with the exception of the dancer, every story seems to be an improvement over the same class story of the first game. Agnea's tame beginnings may be a setup for a bombshell later, I know where her second chapter takes place and it's rather foreboding.

To expand on this, the first Octopath had a few heroes and villains who really stood out, but the stories themselves were rarely very interesting, with the exception of Primrose that was exciting for the first three chapters. In this game however every story makes me want to know how it continues. Most of them sets up a good mystery or in other good ways hints towards exciting things to come.

The combat seems to be slightly improved. I'm spotting a few less skills that makes me think "when are they ever going to be used?" and the game does a better job of encouraging you to use their more class specific abilities.

Just to let you know Agnea's story is very clearly the light hearted "feel-good" story of the 8 similar to Tressa from Octopath 1. It doesn't really go anywhere dark for it's entire runtime, which is in contrast to the rest of the stories being FAR darker than Octopath 1's general tone. Octopath 2 is a clear improvement over the OG but the OG does have some better strengths, like the character/class roster being far less unbalanced (Hikari is insanely broken in Octopath 2) and some of the chapters in OP1 being better than most OP2 chapters. (Primrose Chapter 1 and Alfin Chapters 3&4 are peak fiction) But overall OP2 is much better, especially in it's finale. Like, you know, actually HAVING ONE. Generally if I could rank all the stories in both games I would rank them as such:

#1: Alfin
#2: Temenos
#3: Primrose
#4: Paritcio
#5: Cassiti
#6: Cyrus
#7: Throne
#8: Osvald
#9: Orphillia
#10: Therion
#11: Hikari
#12: Olberic
#13: Agnea
#14: Ochette
#15: Tressa
#16: Hannit

Of course, this ranking doesn't actually determine my favorite characters. My favorite character in either game is Tressa despite having the second worst story IMO. And despite Alfin having the best story, he's not even close to my favorite characters. Temenos is probably my second favorite character followed closely by partitio. Octopath is probably the only series (with good writing, so KH doesn't count) where I strongly prefer the male characters over the female ones. I like Therion a lot too solely for the fact that his relationship with that noblewoman girl turned me into a hardcore shipper with how wholesome and sweet that whole dynamic was. Just be prepared for some crazy twists in OP2. Not everyone can be trusted. Also the final boss theme is arguably the best final boss theme in video game historic. Literally God Shattering Star 2. Should have been the final map theme of FE Engage instead of the crap we got. Masterpiece.

What Videogames Are You Playing Right Now?

I beat Tears of the Kingdom about a month ago. Great game, I'm just sad I didn't have the time to do everything I wanted to do. I had to stop early to give the game to my brother... and he never played it. And IDK I don't really want to go back to a game after I've gotten so far and am right before the final boss door after all this buildup. It just feels wrong to backtrack and do all these other things.

The main game I'm playing now is Shin Megami Tensei IV. After many struggles I got on the neutral route (aka true ending route) and I am currently on the very last dungeon, and it sure is a hassle. Luckily I'm almost done, and then I can move onto the sequel SMT4 Apocalypse. On my first playthrough I followed a guide 1-to-1 besides a single mistake, which ended up costing me the run because by the time I hit the alignment lock I was locked into either law or chaos. I fought the same boss Kenji 14 times over and over making different decisions trying to get the neutral ending, only to realize that I COULDN'T get the neutral ending. Even reloading my save did nothing. So, out of despair and desperation. I went for the early bad ending (nothingness/nihilism ending) so I could start NG+, get the bonuses, and get my alignment back to square one so I could make the right choices this time and not mess up, this time following the guide even more closely. I got locked onto neutral, but then after that it was a serious struggle to complete the 20 or so sidequests you had to do to continue the story, but once that was over with I could finally finish the game with the best ending and after over 90 hours of gameplay I'm just glad I'm almost done. Oh wait... I forgot about the DLC bosses... crap.
