You can delete and re-upload the same screenshot multiple times, it creates this thing called buzz that Kentona bathes in
You can also make a topic complaining about user engagement on RMN to try to get people to review your game.
I've sometimes try to engage what player-base I have with the blogs that I write, but, it doesn't always work out that way.
write people pms, pm power is big.
also networking. find the peeps or friends of peeps who like that genre or type of game.
What you wanna do is
1. give people a reason to care about YOU, and as an extension, your game
(like how I totally appreciate the redmask's work and unique direction with africa-inspired stuff. long before I talked to him. and sorry mate, I started the game up I am aiming to play it this week : ) )
2. give people the chance to see if the game is their cup of tea, if they know it looks like their cup of tea, they might just wanna try it
-> 3. as an extension, get headline killer big thingz like BOOBZ, BOOBARIAN, LOOK IT HAS FURRIES, DRAGON LIZARD LOVE GO, you can date the dragon!, or catchphrase stuff like that that sums up a core mechanic in your game combined with something fun or unique about it
(like how hatoful boyfriend is about dating pigeons, literally. sold plenty of people
or how there's stuff that's "kill fleshy messed-up creatures with tears")
The shorter and snappier you can summarize your game and what makes it good or different the better.
I don't have much time for random games, I know faaaar too many titles for that. If I pick out something that's my thing, that's what I will play.
At least around these parts, there's also screaming and drama and lolz look at dis gam

For the record, most of these are bad ideas - people are just pointing out things that have gotten others in trouble in the past for doing (in case that wasn't obvious).
Kylaila and Marrend's posts are good though.
Also, try going on the discord chat now and then to talk to people, maybe show off a few things about your project in various areas (the screenshot thread, the discord chat, the WIP topic/s), engage with the community a bit to make ties, try using one or two social media platforms (tumblr/facebook/twitter/etc).

But really, find a niche and capitalize on it. People would jokingly state back then that there's too many zombie games but in reality there wasn't many turn based zombie games that were complete or even playable in rpgmaker. And now I have a game with more downloads then most games on the site.

Some people are only active in the community and never get anything done. Some people only work on their games and nobody ever hears about them, thus making beautiful games nobody will ever play.
Find a balance between the two. If you're active and the community sees you, the community will know about you.

DRAGON LIZARD LOVE GO, you can date the dragon!
I thought this was a April was A Fool joke/reference. Because, you know, it specifically says you can NOT date the dragon.
Welp. Shows how much attention I gave to that event!

: D I love you.
I actually had the April one in mind in mind (cause I WANTED TO DATE THE DRAGON, OK?! well, it wasn't a particularily friendly dragon, to be fair. And now I have Angels with Scaly Wings)
But indeed it actually fits with our Winterruption event game!
Only different perspective, let'sa date the priestess as a dragon hehe.
"Dragon saves the day!" would be more appropriate tho imho : ) And it sounds deliciously wonderful! (also, I loved the hatoful boyfriend catchphrase. tho it has little dating, still a fun investment. I also
