How planned-out should your RPG be before you begin?

author=kentona
explain clearly what you mean, please, because you are making no sense at all.

It seems like you are saying you can open up an engine or editor (or programming IDE) and just do things randomly until an idea forms. I don't think you see the parallel here that a notepad is just another "editor" in which you can express or form ideas.

What do you do when you have a notepad? You put down idea after you open it. Using a notepad for example, in creativity such is the case now, is flawed, because you are putting predetermined idea down that you most likely will not follow. because remember, you have a notepad open, not the program you are planning for.

If you open rpg maker and start creating some events, then you are able to get idea as you go that are new that were no pre-done before. So there are less walls around you creativity.

No you have to think before you start to write anything. You don't go into a notepad blind, that's where you put your idea.

Well, for one, creativity thrives when there are limitations, and two, ideas come first.

Yes if you go in blind, you have no paths to walk on limiting you in many more ways than planning a few paths which you can build off of.

@LegendaryCreator - You are talking complete and utter nonsense :) kentona has it right.

Just because you don't understand does not mean it's nonsense.

You execute and then you do idea, in terms of creativity in the form of design and art.

Otherwise it's scripted, like a game of Indigo Prophecy, with no real control over what you want to put in because you built walls around your creativity.

Party system help

You have to do it manually each time, even the scripts that "say" they do what you ask actually really don't because remove party members is literally REMOVE.

Or at least on VX, you can do what you are saying in Xp.

Planning ahead creates walls, eventually when you actually start making the game, you will wither start to become uninterested, or you will start branching off when trying to make an original/unique/non-clone type game whichever.

Because when making game, planning ahead, unless it's like a very small detail makes no sense. It blocks creativity if you actually go through with it, and most of the time, you won't, you will change it as you go on, and when you look back, you end up realizing you preferred it different then what was planned.

The only logical approach is to start and see what it comes to, and then build off from there. Then you have full creative control, maybe you started making a little rpg, and then it give you an idea to make a open world western themed game out of nowhere based on what you already have. You then combine what you ave, and add what you thought up, and then not only are you interested since it came from your head, but it will turn out how you want it in most ways.
