LIBERTY'S PROFILE

I enjoy playing and creating games (mostly RPGs) and have a love of story and characterisation above graphics. I've been into RM* since '96 and have used all makers - started on the PSX makers, found and used a patched version of the SNES RM, then moved to RM95. When I found RM2K I finally decided to join some forums and I've been a part of the community ever since.

Inns and outs

I've considered a few things about this. Of course you're not going to be spending enough time in some of the smaller settlements to influence the innkeepers as much, and seeing as they'll be the quick-stop inns the rewards for staying there will be much lower than the inns in the larger areas of commerce - of which there are six in all (three in each realm).

For example, as Narissa has grown up in Louva she and Master Inni (innkeeper extraordinaire) are already fairly close and there is already a room with a bathroom attached. However getting from there to Selva means going through a forest full of monsters - which means you'll need an inn-stop afterwards. I expect the Selva inn will be used more than once - enough times to become friendly with the staff.

The larger inns will probably be revisited a lot more thanks to the guilds that will be close by, filled with sidequests and challenges, as well as the revisiting of certain areas in order to explore new-found areas.

There are reasons for having this 'friendship' system in place. It's to create a sense of belonging for the player and the main character - which in turn will play a part in the plot itself near the end game. Certain NPCs will also be affected by this system - as well as the guilds. No spoilers, but there are reasons for having it.

Discounts, well, really they're more of an indication that you're friendly with the innkeeper. (Though I've found it really annoying when you've got just under the amount needed for a sleep, are quite low on life and don't want to sell precious merchandise to pay for inn fees.) I'm also considering something along the lines of an inn coupon where you 'pay for three nights and get the fourth free' instead. I'm still throwing a few ideas around, really.

Oh, and money wise, most of the time it will be cheaper to visit an inn than to sink a glut of healing items into your gullet. Money will be hard to come by - especially in the True Realm - and using it all on items, whilst great in theory, may not be the best idea. ^.^

And I just wrote a wall of text. XP

Keep asking questions - it makes me have to re-think things more!

Best RM Games you've Ever Played

Oh dear God. Suikoden is a god among RPGs. It's up there with Lufia II, Terranigma, Secret of Mana/Evermore and Chrono Trigger as the best of the best (on my list, anyway).

Suikoden Rant Ahoy!

There are 108 characters, a home base, deep political story, great characterization (for that many characters anyway), at least two different endings (the first two - more for the later ones) and a world history that makes me a very happy nerdette. This is all set in the same world during different times, but including some of the same characters - or descendants of -, nations, relics and general feel.

The first two games are hailed as the best, the third and fifth as pretty damn good, the fourth as something best forgotten or at least consigned to the dark depths of the history it was spawned from. The series also includes two Gaidens based on a certain character who retains a semi-major role in the third game, and a strategy RPG set a few years after the aforementioned fourth game. Also a DS game that had abso-bloody-lutely nothing to do with the other games except the title and the 108 stars of destiny.

There is also three different battle modes - normal monster battles where your party of six kills and maims and have combo attacks and protect close friends when they're hurt. Then there's the duels where the main character goes one on one against an enemy in a battle of rock, paper, scissors. Lastly there's the sometimes awesome war battles. Suikoden I uses a larger rock, paper, scissors system, whilst Suikoden II lets you mix and match your warriors into groups of five to take on the enemy in a strategy-esque way.

Seriously, why aren't you playing this yet?

You can download a version of both games for your PSP if you have one (I think they're about $5-15 each?), or buy them via ebay. Hell, if you can't get them that way, try other ways. You cannot call yourself an RPG gamer if you have never played these games.

Word.

In other news, I'd have to say my favourite RM games would be Heroes Realm, Love and War, Clouded Heart <3, Sunset over Imdahl, Three the Hard Way and War of Two Worlds. And Exit Fate. ^.^
Yeah, story for the win!

Inns and outs

This is why prevention is better than the cure. ^.^
And there are items that cure more than one status at a time, so I think this evens it out a little. Mind you, it won't cost much to use a bath, or to sleep at an inn for that matter. Probably be about the same cost of sleeping in a normal RPG inn. And it makes sense that rundown inns would have problems (though it would be a chance of about 25-50%, not a sure thing).

I don't know. I like the idea - there's chances of getting good items to even the costs out, too, remember.

Oooh, harsh! Wonder what she did to get that kind of reaction.

Guess I'll have to play to find out, huh? ^.^

DOING IT! ~ WEEK ONE

They look great! That spider one - Beserker - kinda freaks me a bit. It looks like a spider with a giant eye. Love the plant-aspect you gave the Restorer too. I like the hunter best, though - something about the slime... ^.^ It looks a bit like a cross between a rabbite, a ball and a slimey.

Eh, I'll add something while I'm at it.

PEN HEN
DESCRIPTION: So called because of their pencil-thin legs. Found in forested areas, these white and purple birds are hard to locate. They build their nests next to water and coat the bottom of the nest in a rubbery bile that floats on the water. When a Pen Hen feels endangered it will push the nest onto the water and sail it to safety. Their long legs aid them in striding through mud, whilst their long claws grab for purchase in the slippery river bottoms.
HISTORY: Pen Hens were first encountered during the exploration of Rishkal Island by Lord Midin Louvelle. It is believed that the explorers' diet included both the elusive birds and their eggs.
RISK: Though hardly dangerous beasts they can be very territorial when a nest is nearby and will attack anything that gets too close. Brooding females are especially dangerous during the early Spring and can deal a lot of damage to any unsuspecting foe.
PRODUCE: Their feathers are harvested for costume creation and are considered a rarity on the mainland. The meat is considered too tough to eat, though some still hunt them for food. Their eggs are off-white with purple flecks and are considered a prize to egg collectors.

DOING IT! ~ WEEK ONE

DOING IT!

Week the first.

DOING IT! is a community event ran each week where a prompt is given and those who wish to fulfill it post their work here. It is entirely optional, you may join at any time - even after a week has finished. Feel free to post as many pieces as you like. Feedback is encouraged.

DETAILED EXPLANATION/QUESTIONS/SUGGESTIONS HERE

RULES
- Post your work in the thread, preferably with some small explanation about it. Whether that be about any troubles you had fulfilling the prompt, how you went about it or how you think it turned out is up to you.
- Feedback is highly encouraged, but optional. No flaming please. Constructional critique is preferred. If you see a piece without feedback, consider leaving even a line about it. Keep feedback polite.
- Keep posts on/in topic. Try not to get too off-track, please.
- "Borrowing". As these threads may include both original graphical and musical creations please ask the creators instead of just adding them to your 'collections'. If authors don't mind adding full works, go ahead, but partial works are also encouraged. If someone states in their post that they do not want their work used, please try to refrain yourself from grabbing with your grubby hands. It makes you look like a fool and a thief when others' point it out. People have been given bad reputations and ostracized from communities for doing this.
- You may add to this topic at any time. A link to this and the other weekly topics to come will be added to the main topic each week. Feel free to add new work to any of them at any time.

If you have any questions, suggestions or ideas for prompts please see the
original thread.

Nerd Test

Dear God. I knew it was true...

Would this annoy you?

I like a bit of direction as to where I need to go - especially in a game that's plot/character-driven. Then again, I also love to explore towns and cities and have the chance to ask people things and get led to different quests.

A nice balance of the two (with lots of secrets scattered around) would be my ideal of a game, really. Having hints of where to go but with the chance to take off and do something else if you want to.
