LIBERTY'S PROFILE

I enjoy playing and creating games (mostly RPGs) and have a love of story and characterisation above graphics. I've been into RM* since '96 and have used all makers - started on the PSX makers, found and used a patched version of the SNES RM, then moved to RM95. When I found RM2K I finally decided to join some forums and I've been a part of the community ever since.

That's the spirit! I totally agree with you Lascivaware !

What about AI-generated entity behavior ? Like enemy AI ? (most of my games have it, including this one)

There is definitely a difference between a plugin that automatically implants AI-generated text for NPCs or using graphics that were created by an AI bot for your game and one that allows entities to draw from in-engine scripts to have them act in specific ways in response to player movement (basically a much more detailed version of IF player x, THEN event y).

Just to answer the questions posed (I will add them to the OP)
1) Is the use of programmes such as ChatGPT allowed in instances where they are used for other purposes than writing? For example: Proofreading, generating names, helping develop ideas, etc...

I don't know that there's a way to tell, exactly, if someone has used a program for things like proofreading or name generation, but when speaking of AI generation, it's more about the implementation of such in the game itself (or more like, using it to create your game and/or assets for you), not as tools to help refine your own creations. If you really want to nitpick Ai gen, you could say the guassian blur in photoshop is technically AI-gen but that's not what we're talking about.

We are speaking of that which creates for you, from 'scratch', your game/resource/script/etc. Sgt M put it best, I think:
"I think it's whether the AI is intended to be used as a tool or as a solution is what separates the two ideals... Generating entire assets without lifting a finger is AI usage as a solution. One is meant to assist the creative process, the other is meant to circumvent it entirely. "

2) Is AI generated content banned from non-game and non-resource parts of the site, such as forum posts?

Forum posts should be fine as long as it's not the case of "Here's stuff I 'created' that you can use to make games with". I think if you want to show off things like Ai-gen memes or welp-worthy stuff, that should be fine. If, though, you want to show off something like ai-art that you generated and then slapped your name on, no. It probably depends a lot on the content you want to show off though. Say you were inspired by a piece of AI-gen art to make your own and want to show what you made then that'd probably be fine.

All that to say:
- Is it dumb fun worthy of welpdom? Okay, post it in welp.
- Is it art inspired by AI-generation but fully of your own make? That's fine.
- Is it actual AI-generated art/etc that you're claiming as yours? No.
- Is it an edit of AI-generated art/etc that you're claiming? No.
- Is it a resource that you're intent on sharing for others to use that was created by AI in any way bar inspiration? No.
- Is it used to enhance/change your creation by using other peoples' creations as a basis of amalgamation? Then, no.
- Is it used to enhance/change your creation as a tool, not using other unknown peoples' creations? Yes. (Think Gaussian blur or the healing tool in photoshop).
- Are you using AI generation as a way to avoid the creation process? No.

Hope that helps clear things up.

Sure, I don't mind doing that for you.

Of course we can always create new rules - society changes. Things that weren't seen as an issue back in the day have been removed from the site nowdays because we realised, hey, racism isn't right even if it's 'joking'. Hey, sexist rants about women belonging to men isn't right, even if framed as comedy. Hey, hating on trans people isn't right, even if it's 'lol funny hahah look how edgy'.

Rules change, and sometimes we have to retroactively trim that which no longer fits. We don't do it often, and thankfully there's not much in the way of AI-generated stuff on the site (which is why we're tackling it reasonably early into the situation, so we don't have 100s of games being denied in the future), but sometimes it does happen.

Retroactive denials of games will occur over the next few days.
Yeah, that's my cue to finally migrate over to Itch.io.

I think the site's policy towards AI is well meaning but narrow minded, but retroactively removing content that had previously been accepted is too far and sets an an extremely worrying precedent.

I'm not going to sink time and effort into a gamepage if, for example, you can just decide "oh it's RPGmaker.net, so all the games should be RPGs, Visual Novels aren't allowed."

We've always retroactively denied things that didn't fit the rules. Games that we learned broke rules, for example - Hawkman is one that jumps to mind right away - or had stolen assets. This isn't new - we've always done this. When we decided to remove games with hate speech and homophobia, no-one said a word because it made sense. When we deny games that steal from others' work (including games that were stolen from other sites and hosted here by thieves) it makes perfect sense. Because rules do change as we grow and as new sensibilities become the norm.

It's not so deep. We're not deleting pages, we're denying them. The devs will get a message telling them why, allowing them to change what AI-gen they used in order to get the page reaccepted, as has been the case in some respects in the past (like when a game slipped through the queue by accident, etc).

Also, there's a hell of a difference between knowing a game ripped graphics from FF5 or Phantasia or other snes titles (which we do ask people credit when they do so) and an AI generated image that chimera'd together a bunch of base assets into one without knowing just where the content came from and thus is impossible to correctly credit.

Retroactive denials of games will occur over the next few days. The devs will not be given warnings as long as the games were accepted before this topic was posted. We'll likely give about a week for people to remove their games themselves from the site if they knowingly used AI-generated assets. After that, we'll take it case by case, though if you know of some games or devs who have AI-generated stuff, feel free to either let us know or let them know about this topic. Thanks!

If they want the game back on the site they can replace the assets at any time, if they're not banned, of course.
