CSS'ing your RMN Game Profile

Your browser should have a CSS viewer in its tools. If you're using Chrome, this button is F12. It should help you find the tags that refer to the object you want to move, very easily.

It looks like this:

Using OODA to write battler AI

Worth noting: This is the RPG equivalent of a fighting game boss that reads your input to block.

It's cute on paper but it is remarkably unsatisfying to play against. No one likes being 100%, perfectly countered with nothing they can do about it. Imagine a FPS where enemies are perfectly accurate, or--more relevantly--trying to beat a modern chess AI. It isn't fun. Don't put these in your game.

In a game that uses this, all you do by equipping the Fire Shield is make enemies target someone else. There's no point in making any character beefier than normal, because that makes enemies target the next ally down. You can't have frail healers, because they will be focused down. And above all else, unlike any action game where you can overcome these issues with good positioning and reaction time, in an RPG you are purely at the mercy of enemy attack rolls.

I strongly encourage anyone who read this and thought, "Wow! My game needs this!" to fully rethink why they are making a game in the first place.

Please, Stop Writing Happy Endings

I don't take pleasure in writing a story that doesn't feature growth.

At the end of their journey, whatever it may be for them, I want any character I write to come out the other end a more fully matured human being.

I vastly prefer happy endings to sour stories over sour endings to happy stories.

that sort of risk discourages demo releases imo, which makes the feedback process needlessly difficult to go through

Thank you for putting what I wanted to say in to words.

Maybe that's because the inclusion of blitzball was a great design decision?

That's exactly why.

I'd play an FFX-0 that starred Jecht, Braska, and young Auron. SQEX, fund it.

There's also the issue that different users are going to offer wildly varying levels of criticism or tolerance.

There are people who can play through FFX without being annoyed by the UI or the voice acting, because they are either unfazed by such things or because they derive enough enjoyment elsewhere (cough blitzball cough) to overlook the game's flaws. Scores are probably even more flawed, in that regard.

Perhaps reviews should be given a 200-character tagline, much like game profiles have.

they [unstarred reviews] are good enough to find good games too and stars are entirely irrelevant, complete game or not.

For the most part, this is correct.

It honestly depends how much traction this idea gets.

At present, I'm not planning on it.
Oops, I hope I haven't started a landslide.

As far as revising previous reviews. I'd only do so if you go back and find that a given game has a "more definitive" version than what you played. If the version you reviewed is still the version being downloaded, no edits are necessary. You're explaining whether or not that demo is worth the player's time.

I think my irritation here had less to do with the principle of reviewing demos than it did with the idea that I hadn't updated the download fast enough to excise the faults mentioned before it was reviewed.

PM an administrator like kentona. Make sure to explain your issue and give a link to the other account in question in your message.

Problems like that are typically corrected by hand around here.
