I have finally started composing music (for realz this time) and I am looking Mitsuda's music in CT for practice and tricks. What do you guys think about that? Is Mr. Mitsuda a good composer to learn things from IYO?

Mitsuda is a fine muse for your music, but if you want Japanese composers, don't discount Koichi Sugiyama, Yoko Shimomura, Tomohito Nishiura (probably my fave), and loads of other people that don't make music for just video games.

One of the more intriguing aspects of Koji Kondo's work for me, was realizing that he to write songs in Ocarina of Time to be played by players on their flute. So he basically needed to start with these 3 notes melodies and then morph that into a full thing. I always thought that would be really hard, but I have no idea, honestly. Maybe it was really easy!

I think these are all excellent choices. It's important to keep your study subjects varied, because if you don't, you run the risk of sounding like the composer you're studying.
@Isrieri:
I've listened to all of the composers you mentions and I like them too, especially Nishiura's work on the Dark Cloud games.

My favorite composer is Noriyuki Iwadare though (hands down). I'm learning from Mitsuda first since his music is pretty simple and easy accessible.

I've actually been thinking about doing the OoT challenge. I've always enjoyed minimalist approaches, or simply to do much with little.

@pianotm: True. Very true, indeed. I have too many influences to see that as a problem though. I also like weird/jazzy things. One of the reasons I'm studying Mitsuda's music in CT is because of me recently playing the game + trying to sound...more normal? Anyway, I think the biggest thing that I need to work on ATM is form and song structure.

I might share some stuff some time if I feel brave enough. ^^
