MACSHIFT'S PROFILE

Hello! I'm Mac and I'm new to game-making.

I have a lot of big ideas for games that I'm excited about, but right now I'm focusing on learning the skills needed to do them justice.

To that end, I've been making small practice games and participating in RMN events as I'm able... and I've already made three games!

Stay tuned to see what other weird stuff I come up with.

It Came From the Drain

Thank you for playing my game and giving such thorough feedback!

You're right, I did make the house into one big map. I was having difficulty getting the monster to continue the chase properly when I had all the rooms separated, so I used the parallax feature and an event with a giant sprite that changes its image to cover the rest of the house, depending on which room the player goes in. (Still not sure that was the best way, though, and I had to do a little sneaky teleporting of the monster when its pathfinding didn't work so well!) In any case, I'm glad it came together well enough.

I agree the music/sound was lackluster. I wasn't confident about my ability to make the right music choices, but maybe just doing my best and picking something would be better than avoiding it, as I've largely been doing so far. I have enjoyed creating my own sounds though--including the phone voice! I'm looking forward to developing both of these skills in my future games.

I'm so glad to see you got the stairwell and smoke inhalation deaths! Adding in "bonus" deaths is something I get a kick out of. I always look for stuff like that in games I play, but I wasn't sure if that was just me.

Finally, that bug you found is a nasty one! I'll definitely go in and fix that.

Thanks again for playing, and thank you for the encouragement!

Thank you for doing a let's play of my game! It's really helpful to actually see a player's reactions. It gave me a lot to think about, and you also found a significant bug, so I'll be uploading a fixed version as soon as I can!

It Came From the Drain Review

Thank you for the review! You make a good point about the monster being a little too dumb; once you know at least one of the places you can go, the game doesn't feel nearly as challenging.

As for that bug in the basement, I can't believe I missed that! (Actually, I had intended for it to be impossible to get the lighter before that chase.) I'll have to go in and take care of it.

By the way, making the floorboards creak was just something I added for ambience, but now that you mention it, having it influence the monster's awareness of your location would've been cool!

It Came From the Drain

So glad to hear you enjoyed my game! Thanks for playing!

Resurrect the Dying

I just submitted a gamepage for "The Legend of Swale's Hero", my short RPG about fighting an invasion of sentient alien plants. (Click here to check it out.)

Nothing to play yet, but at least I have something to show for my work this past month!

*Edited to add the link once the gamepage was approved.

At least we made some progress on our respective projects.

Exactly! This helps to keep me from drifting out of the habit completely when a lot of other "life stuff" is going on.

Resurrect the Dying

Just couldn't get to where I wanted with my project.

At this point I'll probably just aim for a gamepage (even though there won't be a badge) so that I don't feel like I'm totally giving up.

... the single rooms, like the bathroom in the first pic I posted (but also the kitchen) were well made! Anyway not bad!

So glad to read that, given how my first mapping attempts turned out!

Thanks for taking an interest, and feel free to let me know what you think!

It Came From the Drain Review

Thank you for taking the time to play and review my game!

I'm so glad the B-movie inspiration came through, and that the art fit well. In fact I was unsure if I made enough hiding places, or if it was clear through clues which places the player can hide. I definitely don't want to frustrate players with a ton of unavoidable deaths. And mapping is still not my strong suit, so I hope the layout of the house didn't cause too much grief!

As I continue learning, my games are getting more complex, so I'm thinking I should recruit playtesters to help me catch these kinds of things for the next one.

Thank you again--your reviews are always so fun to read, and I find them very fair. You've given me a lot to consider, which can only help me improve.

(Also, thanks for noticing and appreciating the little details!)
