Magic the Whaaa...? My friends at school keep talking about magic the gathering. Even tried giving me some cards. My question is; What?

You're magical to me.

Do you eat the cards? Is that how it works?
Greatest physical card game I've ever played, and I've played a lot.
But it will suck your money away if you're not careful. ;_;
Sounds expensive... and weird. I don't think your meant to eat the cards. You suck on them. Physical card game? What do you hit people based on the points you accumulate?
Your goal is to reduce your opponent to zero life - therefore, you must physically punch them every time a monster attacks. The game's over when one of you is unconscious. If you pass out before you can deliver the coup de grace, it's a draw.

Too late, I already ate Angelic Destiny. Are you telling me I'm not going to get angel wings and holy powers!?

This guy and this gal would like to have a word with you.

*Edit: Unless you're doing something really wacky!

Sounds like a great game!

And a great excuse to punch someone you hate.

Blue sorceress! Take thy mother-may-I control deck and... and... (Ok, I'm a huge fan of blue.)

I am 33 and have been hopelessly hooked on Magic: the Gathering since the age of 15. This shit's more addictive than coke. Of course, there are worse things to be addicted to...like coke.

Magic: the Gathering is essentially this: your love of fantasy art and story telling are combined with a customizable strategy role playing elements to create a game rather like chess.

I've always been partial to white and blue.

As to how to win, the methods are thus:

HP failure: reducing your opponent to zero hitpoints.
Card death: library runs out. This process can be sped up with millstones and other deck killing cards. There's also a card that can remove an opponent's library from the game (the text requires you to tear up the card), but I can't remember what it is.
Some ultrarare cards that kill an opponent outright, including the following: Door to Nothingness, which removes target opponent from the game (I have this one), Phage: the Untouchable, which if unblocked, anything she attacks (you included, this is another I have) is removed from the game.
Some ultrarare cards that allow you to win outright, including the following: Amulet of Quoz, which allows you and your opponent to flip a coin to see who wins, Barren Glory, which, if you have it on your field, provided you have no other cards in play and your hand is empty, you win the game.

You obviously have a good grasp of this game...

I know a few people I'd like to play this with.

I didn't even know the game was that old! Also thanks for explaining it, now I actually want to try it. Wish I would have taken those cards when I had the chance!

Some of the cards are so memorable, too.

Squee's Toy got a lot of laughs in the high school commons, and so did Patrol Hounds (The flavor text was "Wuv Muffin!"). I started well after fourth ed. though, so I missed the earlier Wheel of Torture ("Umm...I'd like to take a bowel.").
I remember back in high school that somebody tried to get me into playing Magic The Gathering, even going as far as to give me my own deck to start off with and teach me some of the rules too. I thought that the game was pretty enjoyable – and I even won a couple of games against him – but I found that everything was a bit too overwhelming for me at the time with all the different cards, rules, and such. I always preferred playing the Pokemon Trading Card Game compared to something like Magic because I just found everything to be a bit easier to understand thanks in large part to owning the Game Boy version of the game and familiarizing myself with all the different rules and attack strategies. Maybe if I gave it another chance, I could probably understand everything now because I’m a bit older and not as impatient as I was once before. But I think it’s probably better at my age that I further distance myself with anything to do that’s card related (unless it’s Poker, I love that shit) and just focus on other things to do with my time.

All I can say MajoracanKing is just good luck and don’t spend too much time and money on it, but then again this is coming from the same person who spends almost $800 a year to go to 3 NHL games and then spends another $300 on other sports memorabilia while he's there. >_<
Get the most recent Duels of the Planeswalker game - it's like $20ish and will teach you the game and a ton of ways to play and learn.

Oh trust me I plan on spending very little on this if anything at all! Though it is beginning to sound more interesting.

I'll check it out. Planeswalker is part of Magic the gathering then?

Good idea. Get a starter set and learn how to play among friends. It doesn't hit your finances that hard to get the occasional booster pack. Of course, you'll reach the point where you start looking for certain cards, and there you go, spending away.
