[Poll] Western RPGs VS Japanese RPGs

This is definitely a touchy subject with me...

Let me just say that I do in fact like both genres. I don't care about the usual aesthetic tropes of each genre: the graphics, the character design, the plot and story...I can like the characters and plot of "Deus Ex: Human Revolution" and "Final Fantasy 7" equally, as long as they've been well-made and executed.

However, I will have to say I'm more in favor of JRPG's. Why? Because of their gameplay mechanics. More specifically, I guess I should say classic JRPG's, as they become more western in terms of their gameplay in recent years.

In other words, yes...sorry, WRPG fans, but I like the calm, laid back feel of turn-based combat--or any combat that doesn't make me react immediately or make me think on my feet. I have almost never enjoyed any combat systems that don't allow me to stop and think about my actions without fear of being attacked as much as classic turn-based combat. And, no, pausing the game doesn't count...I'm talking about being able halt and think about my strategies while still being considering in a hostile situation.

This is why I know I'd get killed very quickly in a real-life dangerous situation. My brain stutters and may even shut off temporarily when I'm in shock or in a stressful situation. This carries over into video games as well: if the game is to difficult or too chaotic in the beginning, I just can't play it well. Turn-based combat remedies this by allowing me an infinite amount of time to get used to combat and the mechanics of it.

It's just that I find real-time battle more exciting than just mashing through menus and waiting for some random hero to get another turn.

Alas, clearly I'm in the minority, or there would be a a lot more games like this nowadays if people liked these same mechanics.

I'm not saying I hate real-time combat, I like previously stated, it's just I'm not a quick thinker and real-time combat becomes frustrating for me very easily. And being frustrated is not enjoyable.

Pokemon X and Pokemon Y - the 6th generation confirmed!

author=Dudesoft
Unexcited and unsurprised. Pokemon has a target market. Said market will probably spend their summer break trying to find Shiny Tupigs as usual. Pokemon is the same as always, as people keep saying, but changing the formula is like making Kirby suddenly a bloodthirsty clown.

I agree there hasn't been any major or interesting changes since just about it's inception, but I don't really think there needs to be. After this long, any major change would probably hurt the series. It's just they've got a target audience, like you said, who enjoy the formula. The minute changes they make every iteration is enough to satiate fans, including myself.

Pokemon X and Pokemon Y - the 6th generation confirmed!

I'm probably wrong, but I don't think there's actually going to be a full 6th generation. I remember reading somewhere that Nintendo were going to be focusing on integrating and destroying the separation between generations in future games (with the exception of starters and legendaries). Might not be true, just something I heard.

You mean like reducing the number of pokemon available in game from previous generations? Or like...just outright killing previous generations off, like saying, "we will no longer be using or promoting pokemon from generation 1."

Either way, I wouldn't be too surprised. The trailer for X and Y showed pokemon from older generations only, other than the two legendaries and the starters. I know it's because they probably don't want to show any of the other new pokemon yet, but it could be taken as a hint.

Welp...I guess I might have to go with the fire starter this time. Usually I go with grass but that one just looks...derpy. :x

I honestly find the fire-starter (at least the first form) is the coolest looking one this time around. However, I always pick the water starter--it's my tradition. lol.

That tradition was temporarily broken in the 4th generation. I really don't like Piplup/Empoleon. I actually don't like ANY of the Diamond/Pearl starters...

...in fact, I think the 4th generation was the most forgettable generation. I really didn't like it all that much.

Pokemon X and Pokemon Y - the 6th generation confirmed!

When the hell will they ever quit, eh?

Nintendo has confirmed the 6th generation of pokemon: X and Y version (the third installment will probably be called Z version, I'm sure).

Here's a video.

It's now a full-3D game. I just hope this doesn't slow down the pace of the battles.

Here's a picture of the 3 (assumed) starters:

So what do you folks think? Anyone with the 3DS plan on getting this when it releases WORLDWIDE, October 2013? This notion is new, as Japan usually gets the game about a year before the Americas and Europe does.

I for one am excited for this. How about you?

The Secret World

I think I might check this out.

Which game was the biggest disappointement for you?

I liked RE5. I didn't have any complaints while I was playing, really. I loved that Wesker came back and you had to fight him. Wesker is one of my all-time favorite villains.

Looks a little too hi-res, but it looks awesome, nonetheless.

Hey. Is the rocket launcher in the chest that you need the bible verses to open?
I couldn't find it anywhere else and I didn't want to read all the bible verses.

Yes. Once you read all of them, you go back to Vince's house and grab it from the chest in the bathroom. There's 10 verses and you just have to read them all because there's nothing that tells you you've read them all.
