Dungeon Design ~Where is Brickroad when you need him?~

So I've been designing some dungeons as of late, and I'm interested in hearing about any tutorials or articles on the math or secrets behind effective puzzle design.

For example, making an explorable area with one-way paths that you can reverse using a switch. Are there any algorithms or math theory that one can use to determine how many paths to make and where to locate switches?

I also recall someone mentioned that Brickroad would plot out his dungeons on graph paper. Can anyone elaborate on his method for doing this?

FF13 25 min gameplay trailer

http://www.gametrailers.com/player/usermovies/314383.html?playlist=featured

So a new trailer has come out for FF13, and so far it is looking as deliciously FF7-midgar style cyber-punk as I could ever hope for.

Maybe its time to invest in a PS3?

Sometimes I draw stuff.

Just a chara from my game. Colors coming later, maybe..

Any of you guys/gals swim?

Now that the weather's finally starting to get warmer and my hair's short again (and therefore much less of a water mop), I've been going to the campus rec's pool regularly. I've only been swimming regularly for a little more than half a year, though having to stop for half a year due to re-locating for work and winter setting in.

Something I've been working on is trying to extend the amount of time I can stay underwater for. Most recently I've been able to swim a length of the pool (25 m) in one breath. At the moment though, I'm just doing my best to swim laps while surfacing as little as possible. Any of you big-time swimmers know better techniques for this kind of thing?

Let's see how many swimmers we have in the RMN community!

Resources from first AAG Demo (Mainly Battle Animations)

Hey, I'm releasing a lot of the resources that I used in AAG's first demo (mainly battle animations). I'm not too sure this is the right section, but it doesn't seem like any others really fit the bill (technically this is a release right?)

Taking flight

Hey guys, I need to go concentrate on school for a while so I'll be taking flight for a couple of months.

See ya's

[DEMO] Alter A.I.L.A. Genesis

Alter A.I.L.A. Genesis
Alter A.I.L.A. Genesis takes place in a post-apocalyptic world. You play the role of a young man known as Leon, who seeks to survive in the harsh environment he is brought into. The demo covers about 75% of the 1st phase, which takes place in the mountain prison known as Stynx.

Exploration is done mainly via a side-scrolling view. In certain areas, an exclamation mark will sometimes appear, indicating the presence of hostiles. Press Z when this happens to initiate battle, or wait to let it pass. Sometimes battle will be unavoidable. When walking, enemy encounters won't occur.

The battle system revolves mainly around each character's Abilities, which are a set of commands specific to that character. Abilities require AP and EX to use. AP is gained every time a character takes a turn. The default is 2. EX is gained every time a character uses an Ability. The default is 1. Note that this may change depending on the situation.

Controls
Z: Interact with environment in front/ Initiate battle
Up + Z: Interact with environment above or in background
Down + Z: Interact with environment below or in foreground
X: Access Menu
Shift: Hold to walk/ run

F4: Full screen/ Window
F5: Small Window/ Large Window
F12: Reset to title screen

Notes
- This is a re-make of the first Alter A.I.L.A., therefore it is not required to have played the original.
- This is for Release Something V for Vendetta at RPG Maker Network. Be sure to check it out!
- The RM2k3 RTP is not required to play.
- Scott only explains the essentials in the tutorial. Make sure to read the Help File that he gives you (under Personal Device).
- Warning: There's a lot of spoilers in the database and graphics folders. Just in case, I've closed off access in the Editor and converted the graphics to .xyz format.
- The download is about 17.2 MB.
- Total gameplay time is around 1.5 hours.
- Thanks to Gamecake and Zshare for hosting!
- Make sure to download the most current patch as well!

If YOU were a time mage!

This incredibly nerdy idea came to me when I was thinking of how to finish my RS!V entry quicker. (And ironically enough, I'm spending time to set this up instead of working on said entry)

Basically choose a spell from the list (or from any game I guess) that you'd like to apply to something in real life.

List of FF Time Magic

* Haste - Haste speeds up an action of a character, allowing it to take more actions. Some games include the multi-targettable Haste2 or Hastega.
* Slow - Slow slows down an action of a character, reducing the amount of actions it can do. Also upgradeable to Slow2 or Slowga.
* Stop - Stop prevents a character from taking action until it wears off.
* Invisible - The character's evasion rises. In Final Fantasy XI the spell makes a character totally invincible to physical attacks (his/her sprite even disappears), but getting hit by magic attacks will connect and cancel the status.
* Disable - Disable prevents a character from taking an action, but they can still move.
* Regen - Regen allows characters to recover HP periodically until it wears off. This is also commonly a spell of White Magic, varying between titles.
* Warp - Warp allows characters to escape from battle or the dungeon they're currently in. Sometimes, instead of escaping from battle, it attempts to kill the enemy party.
* Immobilize - Immobilize prevents a character from moving, but can still take other actions.
* Gravity/Demi & Graviga/Quarter - These spells inflict Gravity damage which reduces the HP of the target by a set percentage. Stronger spells such as 'Gravija' can sap much more that 50% of the character's HP. Other spells such as 'Tornado' or 'Maelstrom' have the same effect as Gravija.
* Reflect - Reflect prevents spells from affecting the target of the reflect spell. Instead, the spell is reflected back at either the caster of the spell or, if the spell is on the same team as the target, a random foe. Can also appear as Reflectga.
* Float - Float gives the target immunity from Earth elemental attacks, but increases damage from Wind elemental attacks. In Final Fantasy IV and Final Fantasy, Float also protected the party from damage in certain dungeons or from traps.
* Quick - Quick allows a character to take an extra turn immediately.
* X-Zone - X-Zone sends all targets into nothingness.
* Comet and Meteor - These spells generally deal random, gravity-based damage on their targets, with Comet being single hit and Meteor dealing multiple hits.
* Vanish - The character turns intangible to physical attacks, but in exchange, its magic evasion is nullified.
* Old - In Final Fantasy V, lowers the level of a target.
* Return - In Final Fantasy V, resets the battle to the beginning.
* Speed - In Final Fantasy V, speeds up the flow of battle.
* Balance - In Final Fantasy XII, damages according how much HP is lost.
* Berserk - In Final Fantasy XII, causes target to use physical attack only.
* Bleed - In Final Fantasy XII, lowers target HP rapidly with Sap.
* Break - In Final Fantasy XII, turns target to stone.
* Countdown - In Final Fantasy XII, causes doom.
* Extend - In Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift, causes the Spellbound status.

Haste: I'd use it to finish my RS!V entry, and probably join track and field again.

The weird things you do

Let's post about weird things you do when you play video games. I'll start:

Whenever I start a new RPG, I will always seek out the nearest save point, save, and quit. Then I won't touch the game again for like half an hour or more. Doesn't matter what game it is. No special reason for it either.
