Good Day Everybody, It's Me.

Heya, fellow nerds of the world. I'm not exactly new to RMN, but since I've barely been active here for the last year or so, I figured it would be best to re-introduce myself. Who knows, one or two of you might even remember me, if I'm lucky.

I would like to apologise to anyone who was hoping for or expecting feedback, testing, or any sort of productivity from me for their projects. I promise I didn't forget about you. To put it simple, a mix of feeling overwhelmed and of my personal interests shifting away from RPG Maker was the main reason for me to go quiet for so long. At least it seems like you all have been chugging along just fine. Good work, you all!

I can't promise I'll be super active again in the future for now, as I haven't touched RPG Maker for any work deserving the name in a long, long time. But I will try to at least not completely vanish from RMN like this again.

Other than that, yup, I'm still a huge nerd, I still live in Germany, and I still like to talk a lot. I mostly waste spend my time on RMN's Discord channel these days, so feel free to say hi there as well.

Thanks for having me back, and I hope we can be great friends! Again!

RMN YouTube: The Revivening!

RMN YouTube:
The Revivening!

As some of you may know, RMN has its own YouTube channel. The RMN music pack, Let's Plays, streams, and highlight videos on quality RPG Maker games are among the content you can find on there. Yet despite a quite substantial number of subscribers, for a long time the channel hadn't seen a lot of activity until recently.

Which is why I want to try to keep the buzz going, and promote your games in doing so! But I could use some help.

So far, I have the following things planned:

- I will check the media section of RMN regularly and look for worthwhile content to showcase on RMN's channel. Trailers, OSTs, Let's Plays and similar videos will get their own playlists, so that viewers visiting our channel can find and check out your media easily.
You can contribute by pointing out good content to me here in this thread, similar to how suggestions can be made for featured games and images. In addition, if you have video media for your own or someone else's game ready and would like it to be uploaded to RMN's channel directly to reach more viewers, or simply don't have a YouTube channel of your own to upload to, feel free to let me know and I'll gladly feature your content.

- Just like Liberty has resumed using the channel for streams of RMN games of her own, I will add footage of some of my own streams of your games every now and then as well.
But we can always use more and a wider selection of Let's Plays and gameplay videos. If you are a Let's Player or a streamer and would like to contribute some content to be added directly to RMN's channel, please speak up and we'll get this show on the road. Only requirement: The games you create footage of must have a download available on RMN.

- Every so often, site-related videos for game making events, creative works by members of RMN, and similar occasions might find its way onto the channel as well. We're open to suggestions as to what other purposes we might use the channel for, so if you have any good ideas on how to make it better, throw your comments at me.

There are a few rules to keep in mind:

- Any game to be promoted on the channel must have a download on RMN (demos are fine). As much as we want to draw people's attention towards games still in development, we need some more substantial indication that your game has any chance of getting finished and consists of more than just a trailer.

- For the same reason, promotional material for unfinished games that have been cancelled and are no longer being developed is not eligible. Promoting vapourware isn't exactly the goal here. Actual gameplay footage of cancelled games might still be acceptable, though.

- Your promotional material must meet the same quality standards as any other content to be added to RMN. It's not our goal to be unnecessarily restrictive, but there's no benefit for anyone if we lose our credibility by featuring bad content. RMN's staff reserves the right to decide on a case-by-case basis when in doubt.

Feel free to post any questions and link your content here in the thread, too. Happy game making!

Free puzzles and complex events!

Heyo, fellow RMNers! I had been thinking about making this thread for a while now, and as today is the Random Act of Kindness Day, it's finally time to make it a reality.

As you may or may not know, I enjoy creating all kinds of complicated, crazy mechanics with events. Eventing is the one thing in RPG Maker I believe I'm really good at. In addition, I like designing minigames and puzzles as well.
Of course, working with eventing is not a secret skill, but something everybody can learn rather easily. However, it's not something everybody enjoys, or has the patience for. But I actually like coming up with ways to make complex things work purely with events. And I have a lot of experience with it: Among other things, I made a puzzle game where all the mechanics are purely event-based, worked on two battle systems that almost completely work through events, and designed puzzles for unity's game Luxaren Allure.

What does that have to do with you? Well, if these credentials convince you, and you happen to want a puzzle, minigame or some really complicated eventing for your game... then let me know, and I'll try to get it done for you. I can work in RPG Maker XP, 2003, and VX Ace (although if necessary I can design theoretical concepts for any maker)
And the best part? It's free! I don't want anything in return! (Okay, maybe mentioning me in the credits would be nice.)

I will reserve the right to refuse or abandon a job if it really doesn't work for me, although I'm usually pretty persistent.

So what are you waiting for? I want to work!

Edit:
Just for clarification: The purpose of this thread is to help you out if you are experiencing problems with puzzles or complicated eventing in your own game projects, or for me to create such things for you if you have an idea and struggle to implement it yourself.
However, I am currently not available for long-term cooperations or team projects. I'll happily help out here and there, but I just don't have enough free time to commit to full co-creatorship on a complete game.

RMN Album Vol.3 - Scripted Reality

It's been a while since the last time RMN embarked on a journey to write witty parodies of well-known songs. Recently, this post inspired me to revive the RMN Album and start working on Volume 3 - Scripted Reality. Help make it a reality by adding more songs!

You can find the first two installments here:
RMN ALBUM VOL.1 - BEFUDDLING TRACKS
RMN ALBUM VOL.2 - TAKE ME TO YOUR MAKER

There are only a few rules for adding songs:
- The rewritten lyrics must have something to do with game making and/or RMN.
- The songs used have to be widely known. It's only funny if people are likely to recognize the original and see what you did with the lyrics. Indicate the original song's name and artist to make it easier to recognize.
- If a song is very long or repetitive, or if you struggle to write new lyrics for a certain part, it's okay to leave a part out. This is supposed to be fun, not a pain in the butt.

And here's a first track to get things going:

The Real 2k3 (Eminem - The Real Slim Shady)

May I have your attention, please?
May I have your attention, please?
Will the real 2k3 please start up?
I repeat, will the real 2k3 please start up?
We're gonna have a problem here...

Y'all act like you've never seen an old engine before
Jaws all on the floor
like Ace and VX just burst in the door
Auto-generating chars worse than before
They first were enforced
Better switch over to me
It's the return of the...
"Ah, wait, no way, they're kidding
Did Degica do what I think they did, did they?"
And Don Miguel said... nothing, you cheaters!
Old version's dead, it's blocked from the spaceweb
Honest creators love RMN
"2k3? I'm sick of him
Look at him, going around
Showing his combat bugs
Messing our projects up"
"Yeah, but he's so good still"
Yeah, I probably got a couple of
lines up in my code messed
But no worse than what's going on
With MV's FPS
Sometimes, you wanna start on a game and just let loose
But can't
But I'm good for old-school stuff
If you so choose
My maps are made of chips
My maps are made of chips
And if you're lucky
You might just learn a few little tricks
And that's the message I deliver to all you kids
Can't expect them not to know
What a well-made database is
Of course they're gonna know
What a variable is
When they're starting their first game
They got the tutorial section, don't they?
We ain't nothing but game devs
So don't commit game theft
Stealing other people's work is totally shameless
But if we can sell Hero's Realm and Ara Fell
Then there's no reason that you, too
Can't work also on games just as well
And if you feel like I feel
Turn on creative mode
Game devs, get your daily dose
Sing the chorus, and it goes:

(Chorus:)
I'm 2k3
Yes I'm the real k3
All you other 2k3s
Are Tsukuru Makers
So won't the real 2k3
Please start up?
Please start up?
Please start up?
Cause I'm 2k3
Yes I'm the real k3
All you other 2k3s
Are Tsukuru Makers
So won't the real 2k3
Please start up?
Please start up?
Please start up?

Tsukuru don't gotta be legal to be famous
Well, I do
So **** that
And **** you too!
You don't appreciate the work of Cherry?
If you can afford to make games in your spare time
You can afford me
"But see, you were once free, isn't that weird?"
Why? Because you could just steal me and pirate me?
So you could, but now I'm back in the market?
You're right, it's a different era
Better switch to me
So I can sit next to old 2k and XP
And hear 'em argue over who's
Second best to me
Little twits, put me on first right on your screen
"Yeah, he's good, but he has no scripting, unlike XP"
You should download some games on your PC
And see the whole world likes
No Maker better than me
I'm sick of your fancy graphics and Ruby
All you do is annoy me
So I have been remade to destroy you!
And there's a million devs who just like me
Who work with me
Who create awesome games with me
Who swear by me
Make and break ground with me
No matter what's the new big thing
It's not quite me!

(Chorus:)
Cause I'm 2k3
Yes I'm the real k3
All you other 2k3s
Are Tsukuru Makers
So won't the real 2k3
Please start up?
Please start up?
Please start up?
Cause I'm 2k3
Yes I'm the real k3
All you other 2k3s
Are Tsukuru Makers
So won't the real 2k3
Please start up?
Please start up?
Please start up?

I am the best of game making tools
Though I'm only giving you
A choice of settings and events
That somewhat limits room
The only difference is I'm making you creative
Work 'round it all,
And I don't need crazy scripting nonsense at all
They just started me up and did it
And whether you like to admit it
You're outwitted
Better than ninety percent of all Makers out there
Then you wonder how can devs
Work when their Maker's outdated
It's funny, cause at the rate it's going, 2030
I'll be the only Maker in the world still deemed worthy
Chasing off the Ace-ers when
I'm making games commercial
And I'm laughing cause their whole
bag of scripting isn't working
And everywhere the legacy of 2k3's lurking
I could be working to make your game
Helping you gain cash and fame
And if my code's looping, circling
I simply don't give a ****
Now put MV down and this system up
So will the real 2k3 please start up
And put those conditions for each branch up?
And be proud to be back in your mind
And back in control
And one more time, best as you can
How does it go?!

(Chorus:)
I'm 2k3
Yes I'm the real k3
All you other 2k3s
Are Tsukuru Makers
So won't the real 2k3
Please start up?
Please start up?
Please start up?
Cause I'm 2k3
Yes I'm the real k3
All you other 2k3s
Are Tsukuru Makers
So won't the real 2k3
Please start up?
Please start up?
Please start up?

Haha!
Guess there some 2k3 in all of us.
Screw it, let's start all our Makers up!

I spent way more time and effort on this than can be considered reasonable in any way...
Also, wow, the original lyrics of this song are terrible!

Now, go forth and mak songs!

Just Do It! - Anti-Procrastination Initiative

Anti-Procrastination Initiative

You have this awesome game project sitting on your computer, waiting for you to finish it. You recently played this one game you really want to write a review for. Or there is that piece of music or art you've been working on to submit for an event or as a resource. But even before you can start to work on it again, you realise how overwhelming the amount of work still to be done is, how exhausting even thinking about this project is, how hard it is to concentrate on it right now.
So maybe just clear your head for a minute first, and play a little game you haven't touched in years, and for good reason. Perhaps visit some website to read a few forum posts in topics that normally don't interest you. Or just watch an at least remotely entertaining video for a while. Or two, or three, or five.
Because right now,
anything sounds more appealing than working on that project you want to see finished so much.

Does this sound familiar to you? Then I regret to inform you that you, too, have fallen victim to the cruel phenomenon known as procrastination. I feel your pain.

But the times they are a-changing! Welcome to the Anti-Procrastination Initiative! The aim of this event is to provide a frame that encourages RMNers to take the opportunity to overcome their tendency to procrastinate. If you are one of us who struggle to stay focused on a task for a longer time, now is the time to start fighting back, and you can earn yourself a shiny achievement and some Makerscore in the process!

Here's how this is going to work:

Starting on Friday, June 10th, everyone who decides to join this event will have the chance to announce a certain goal (or multiple smaller goals) they want to achieve within the next week. I will write down this goal and the day you posted it. Once you have publicly announced what your goal is, you have exactly one week time to get it done - it doesn't matter on what day you post it, you always have until that same weekday one week later.
If you manage to complete your goal before that deadline, produce some evidence - such as a screenshot, a video, a snippet of text etc. - and post it in this thread. Doing so will count as one success on your part, and you can announce a new goal. The complete event is going to last for about 5-6 weeks. If you can achieve 4 successes within that time, you will be rewarded with the Anti-Procrastination Pro achievement, and you can proudly say that you have overcome your inner laziness.

The Rules:

- Be reasonable with your goals. Try to keep them realistic, so that you don't get overwhelmed by an impossible task. Small but manageable steps are the key to regular progress. But don't make them so tiny and easy that they require practically no effort on your part, either. The point of this event is to become better at combating procrastination, and an empty success on paper will not help you in that regard.

- Try to focus on game-making and RMN related goals for this event. Sure, if you want to use this event to encourage yourself to continue your half-written novel or academic thesis, I can't stop you. But the other participants, and the site as a whole, benefit more from this event if what we do here has some relevance for RMN. (Plus, it gives you a chance to build up some hype for the projects you're working on...)

- Do not despair if you can't make a goal in time. There should be enough time available throughout the full event to make up for missing one goal. Just announce a new one instead. And either way, this is not mainly about achievement hunting. Every little bit of work that you have been enouraged to finish by participating in this event is a positive development in itself. Keep that in mind and you should hopefully be able to use the pressure of deadlines to your advantage, instead of seeing them as discouraging.

Good luck and happy not-procrastinating!

[RMXP] [Solved] Problem with exporting/editing animation graphic

Hello, everyone. I'm currently working on my "Swap in the Middle" entry and found myself struggling with a graphics-related problem. I want to use three animation frames from one of RMXP's RTP animation sets - namely "Wind-01" - and turn them into a character set.

This is what that animation sheet normally looks like:

(Original from the RTP)

The graphics I'm interested in are the three tornado frames (the one in the bottom left corner is kind of hard to see.) Now, to show you what my issue is, displaying one of these as an animation in-game makes looks like this:

Yet, whenever I try to edit the image, this is what it turns into:

My guess is that there is some kind of semi-transparency setting involved here that is stored in the graphics file itself and causes the outer edges of the animation to "melt together" with whatever colour surrounds them, so to speak. Exporting and then reimporting the unedited original animation sheet from the RTP does not give me the option to choose transparent colour for this file, as it normally would, which supports my theory.
Unfortunately, I am rather clueless when it comes to working with graphics and have no idea how to prevent such transparency settings from getting erased when editing a file. There's probably a really simple solution for this, but I have no idea what it could be. Does anyone know how to make this work?

Sacrifice as Game Mechanic

A few games I played recently have lead me to start thinking more about a certain concept: Sacrificing something in a game in the hope of getting something better out of it. The idea of sacrifice can obviously be understood in many vastly different ways, some of which hardly have anything in common with each other. But what they have in common is that they give the player the feeling of having to give something up as a means of getting somewhere, ranging from a valuable resource to their main character's sanity. As I started listing some types of sacrifices that I could imagine or had actually seen implemented in games, it occurred to me that there are probably many more ways of using this concept for interesting game mechanics. So I'd like to hear what kinds of thoughts or ideas others have on the subject.

The most common and (theoretically) unspectacular type of sacrifice that occurs in games is probably the practice of giving up resources that exclusively exist for that purpose. Spending MP or items in order to aqcuire a certain benefit, like damage to an enemy or the restoration of another resource such as HP, is something we all know too well. Where it gets more interesting is when these resources serve another additional purpose or are vital rather than easily expendable, like in games where HP themselves also serve to fuel skills, or losing your MP can mean lower stats or even death as well.

Another type of sacrifice that usually requires some more planning and strategic thinking consists of gaining or building up some sort of advantage, and then being given the choice to give up this benefit in exchange for a different desirable effect. Examples are typically stackable buffs a character can acquire over time, but the player can also at any point decide to spend these buffs in order to unleash a powerful skill that gets stronger with every buff stacked so far. In this example, a theoretical long-term benefit is given up for a short-term advantage, but I'm sure there are many other ways to approach this as well.

The one type of sacrifice that I found to be especially rare, both because of their possibly great impact and their dramatic effect, is when actual characters are taken out of the picture in exchange for some kind of benefit. Obviously, mechanics based on this are usually associated with more evil figures, and often set in the context of demonic rituals and the like. For example in the game Spelunky, it is possible to offer the (dead or unconscious) bodies of other living beings, including friendly NPCs, to the goddess Kali by placing them on an altar. Doing this a few times will result in the player receiving an item.
Another even more morbid example can be found in the strategy game Battle for Middle Earth II. In this game, recruited units usually consist of small groups of the same type of warriors whose ranks are slowly filled up again to replace their fallen comrades as long as at least one of them remains. But the faction of Angmar can recruit a Warlock unit who is instead accompanied by a group of acolytes who serve as fuel: Every spell the warlock casts actually causes a certain number of the acolytes to die, which not only restricts the number of spells he can cast within a short time, but also gives enemies the option to quickly kill off the acolytes in order to block the warlock's spellcasting abilities.

In RPGs, mechanics like these aren't very common, although we do occasionally see the boss who sacrifices his little minions to damage the heroes or steal their remaining health. But I think there's probably still tons of ways to make use of this idea of "giving to receive." And they definitely can, but don't all have to be quite as dark as some of the ones described above. So what are your thoughts?

(Solved!) [RMXP] Tiles: Dragon statues from different angle

Greetings everyone. I have a small graphics request: For a specific part of my puzzle RPG "The Book of True Will" (RPG Maker XP) I would need a set of dragon statues. Fortunately, there are some of those included in the RTP already:

The problem is that there are only tiles of such statues facing left and right, but none that face into the two other directions (up and down). If someone would be willing to help me out with this, I'd be extremely grateful. (And of course, visible credit will be given.)

Thanks a lot already!

Talk in Screenshots

Well then. Are you in the mood for a little chat? Good. Now, let's just spice this thing up a bit more, alright?
Don't talk. Let the screenshots do the talking for you.

Rules:
- Instead of writing something, try to keep a somewhat realistic conversation going using only the dialogue from game screenshots. Whatever text is visible on the screenshots you post has to contribute to the conversation in some way. (Of course, the conversation can be funny or humorous.)
- You can post one or two screenshots per post. If you decide to post two, they do not have to be from the same game, but they can be.
- You are technically allowed to post screenshots from any game, but RPG Maker games are preferred.
- You are technically allowed to post screenshots from your own games. Try not to go overboard with this, though.
- The images you post must not be spoilerific! So don't post images of key scenes, screenshots that contain information that spoils a game's prequels, etc.
- And the most important rule: Have fun!

(Solved) [RMXP] Popup Script error

I'm having a very irritating issue with an RPG Maker XP project: When it is started and played, no matter whether in the editor or not, it will run just fine for about 10 to 15 minutes and then randomly crash. The error notice says RGSS stopped working. When looking at the crash details, I found it said the reason for the error is that the "DLL unloaded". Does anyone have an idea what might be causing this?

I found some similar topics, but they all were about RGSS crashing right when starting a game. This, however, occurs only after the game has been running for a while.
I do have a few suspicions about why this happens (like maybe RGSS being overwhelmed by too many event commands), but nothing I'm really sure about. If someboy knows why this happens and how to fix it, I'd be very grateful.
