Creator's Ramblings

With Demon Legacy being a bit more popular than I had expected it to be (I had low expectations, honestly), I'm even happier to continue the game's story with it's sequel.
It's difficult to describe the joy I get when some random player contacts me expressing his thoughts on the game. The jRPG is a game type that takes a lot of flak these days; and while I don't presume to change the way people think about things; I hope I can show that not all RPGs are poorly executed, poorly written wastes of time.

Without further stalling for time, I bring you the first of three installments of "Phantom Legacy".


Characters



Slade
Age:32

Since the events that transpired ten years ago, in which Slade defeated the master plan of the widely known world "menace", Shadar; he has gained quite a bit of renown in the eyes of the masses. Referred to as the "Slayer of God" by some circles, he has since become the Master of the Raganian main land's gifted soldier unit; however as a condition he refuses to take part in any military operations - preferring to train promising soldiers before they go into battle.

Behind this stalwart, admirable man lies a dark secret. A truth he struggles to accept every day. The fact that he was unable to truly defeat Shadar in combat still haunts me to no end. He worries day in, and day out about the final words Shadar left him with.

I leave you now to your punishment, live your pathetic life.

Watch as peace shatters once again, as everything you've ever cared about decays slowly.

Perhaps then, you will understand how much a fool you've been all this time.



Shadar
Age: Ageless

There are many things misunderstood in this world, and whether it is justified or not; Shadar is one such being. With power unfathomable by common men, and a presence that makes even the most hardened veterans terrified; Shadar is a widely known figure of terror and death. Despite having his plans unraveled by Slade's party ten years ago, he managed to increase his own strength over the planet's dimensions ten fold. Since his supposed defeat; he's bided his time.

Atop the abandoned Citadel he watches patiently; as all he had predicted comes to pass.



Nero
Age:22

A young man of twenty two, Nero is a solitary, jaded man who'd rather sit at home and read a good book than go to a fair. Residing on the outskirts of a town now occupied by the Raganian main land, he lives a simple, tranquil life of mediocrity. Behind this seemingly weak, pathetic visage lies a man with strong conviction and personal values. While being a solitary and mostly anti social individual; he has a tendency to speak his mind even when faced with the most inappropriate circumstances. This habit; combined with his Golem (Artifical Human created by Alchemic means) lineage has earned much of his home town's enmity.



Lilith
Age:18

Of those who meet Lilith, few come to have a negative opinion of her; as her demeanor and friendly personality make her easy to approach. A bit of an eccentric woman; she often acts "tomboyish" as some call it, and then overly feminine the next (As if to compensate for the former trait). To confuse people further, bears the crest of the Raganian mainland; yet has no true connection to the royal family. A capable practitioner of both Arcana and Swordplay; she is hailed as a "genius" by the many people she's helped in her travels; searching for a certain man.




Thanatos
Age: "...No"

Highly arrogant, and sometimes narcissistic; Thanatos is a man veiled in a mystery that is even darker than the strange cloths he wears. Claiming to be the world's last great Alchemist, he's moves from graveyard to necropolis; harvesting materials for his depraved experiments. Dismissing the disapproval of alchemy by the masses (and the government) as "ignorance" he strives onward with his work; despite being ostracized and marked as a "Heretic" by many circles. A solitary man, much like Nero is; he is largely a man of science and reason; despite what some may think and say about him.

Battle System

A bit presumptuous perhaps; as this game doesn't have any type of MASSIVE innovations; but I feel the stuff I did mess around with warrants some kind of explanation.




Each character in this game will have their own set of commands. Nero is the most extreme example; as he lacks even the most basic "Item" command from many RPGs.

Think of it this way; FF3/6's unique character system taken a step further. Nero, while he's a bit low on the defensive side has three unique commands.

"Psion" which gives him access to a wide array of unique arcanic abilities.

"Focus" an ability that restores all of his MP and...

"Absorb", an ability that allows him to steal skills from certain foes or enviroments.

This is just one such example; as the game progresses (even passed the demo) you'll meet even more characters, and as the levels go up the difference between all of the characters will become even more apparent. Later on; there will even be a character that use the unique "Law" command skillset, which allows him to use powerful skills depending on the actions of the enemy party.

(I'm pretty sure this is impossible in rm2k3, so disregard that!)

This will fix the occasionally repeating cutscene error some players have reported. Simply drag the map file into the game's base folder. (Directory)/PhantomLegacy/



Closing

Well, that's it. Think a battle was too hard? Find a fatal or minor bug? I'd be a hypocrite if I didn't accept criticism. So say what you'd like about the game. As I was strapped for time (I wanted to release in time for RMN's "Release something") I had to do all of my bug testing and fixing within 9 hours straight of RPGmaker work.

...And about the file size. Sorry; I optimized the size and mp3s the best I could. Considering how much more is on this demo; I'd say I did a pretty decent job of it. I'm still considering moving back to midis; but composers are really difficult to find.

I'm not usually one making topics about something this random, so you'll have to forgive me.

Like anything user friendly (perhaps like rm2k(3)), there's a lot of garbage out there on you tube. But amongst the garbage, there's some really good stuff; good stuff that probably would have never seen the light of day if it were not for youtube.com. Upon looking through anything, whether it's a bloated list of rpg maker games, or a side bar of videos involving some retard getting his balls hit by a see saw; there's going to be something of worth amongst that. Being that I've already rammed the point in the ground; here's what I typically do (waste time) on when I'm messing around with youtube.

Transformer fans will enjoy this one.

I was going to write up something about this, but someone else took the liberty of writing a needlessly complicated description for me, so here you go.

"Dr. Smoov works for Destrou

That is the only way to be able to create such a wonderfully entertaining, charmingly surreal episode of Transformers. The attention to detail and the quality of the dialogue are only matched by the distinguished class of the voice acting and delivery. Brilliantly blended editing that only enhances the viewing pleasure. Very certainly (as other have previously acclaimed) genuinely world class material."

There are a few great little episodes here, my favorite however would have to be "Shockwave's Burden"
